Is TikTok DIY McDonald's Apple Pie Any Good

Emmy's Welcome and Introduction to the Yummy Crate

Greetings, my beautiful lovelies, it's Emmy, how are you? It's great to see you and welcome back. Today's video is sponsored by KiwiCo. KiwiCo inspires kids to see themselves as makers: they have all kinds of wonderful projects to foster creativity and learning. The Yummy Crate is one such project that I'm excited to share with you today.

The Yummy Crate is a fun and tasty way for kids (and adults alike) to explore the world of cooking and baking. Each crate contains new ingredients, recipes, and techniques to try out, along with some helpful tips and tricks from experienced cooks. In this video, we'll be making one of our favorite recipes from the Yummy Crate: a delicious homemade version of the McDonald's apple pie.

Getting Started with the Recipe

Lovelies, let's get started! First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. While that's heating up, let's prepare our ingredients. We'll need some Granny Smith apples, which are nice and tart and way less sweet than the McDonald's version if you're really craving that sweet flavor, then I would add another tablespoon of sugar. But for me, this is just right. We'll also need some cornstarch that has been dissolved in a little bit of water to thicken things up. And of course, we can't forget the puff pastry!

Preparing the Puff Pastry

Now, let's roll out our puff pastry and cut it into rectangles that are about 5 by 2 1/2 inches in size. Whatever size rectangles work best for your pastry sheets, but these will give us a nice flaky crust. Now, we'll take some of our apple pie filling and place it in the middle of each rectangle. Don't want to overstuff these because we don't want them to burst. Brush around the perimeter with some egg wash to help seal the edges together.

Assembling the Pies

Next, we'll take the other half of the pastry sheet and flip it right on top of the filling. Press the edges together gently to help the crust seal together. Use a knife to slash the top of each pie so that they can vent while they're baking. Paint the tops with some more egg wash and sprinkle a little bit of coarse sugar on top. This will give our pies a nice golden brown color and a crunchy texture.

Baking the Pies

Now, it's time to pop our pies into the oven! Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15 minutes, or until they're golden brown and puffed up beautifully. Lovelies, the aroma in here is just heavenly!

Tasting the Finished Pies

Alrighty, lovelies, it's time to taste our finished pies! I love puff pastry, love it. Frozen, thaw it, just cut it, use it, and it puffs beautifully. And look at how beautiful these pies turned out! All puffed up to perfection.

The Taste Test

Hello, beautiful, hello! Look how that egg wash gave the top of it a beautiful yellow sheen. Gorgeous! Did you see that puff of steam that came out when I bit into that? (laughs) Did you hear that light and flaky crunch? Mm-hmm. So stinking hot and lovely.

The Verdict

So, lovelies, what do these pies taste like? Well, they're delicious in their own right, but they don't entirely taste like the McDonald's ones. The last one I had was when I was in Hawaii, and that one had a magnificent crunch on the outside, but it had a completely different kind of pastry shell. But this is absolutely delicious, lovely cinnamon-y flavor.

Conclusion

And that's it, lovelies! That's our homemade version of the McDonald's apple pie using puff pastry from the Yummy Crate. I say it's totally worth making, especially if you're using puff pastry because it's so stinking easy. Thanks again for watching and big thanks to KiwiCo for sponsoring this video.

flipping a burger, but after I showed himhow, he did it himself, and he felt reallyaccomplished by the end of itand really wanted to tackle more recipes. What more could you want, it's just....So if store.Big thanks to KiwiCo forsponsoring this video. So today, we are going tobe making an apple pie, more specifically,we're going to be makinga McDonald's-style apple pie, you know, the rectangular version that would comein that little cardboard sleeve?Well, I saw a video on TikTok that showshow to make it very simply. After making a little apple filling,we're gonna be using somestore-bought puff pastryand bake them up.They look delicious and it's autumn,it's the time of year tobe using those apples upand making some sunny, sweet deliciousness. So, let's go ahead and get started.Today's recipe inspiration comesfrom the Sweet and Salty on TikTok.So, we're supposed to taketwo Granny Smith applesand peel and chop them.So let's do that. This is how I like to core my apples. And just go around, and slice off chunks. If you got some peel or some bruises,we'll just trim those off,and I'm gonna cut theseinto about 1/2-inch cubes.Medium heat, to my pan I'm gonna adda couple pats of butter. Now we're gonna add our apples, sugar.(pan sizzles)Sprinkle that on, thatwill help to releasesome of the natural juices in the apple.Next we're gonna add a littlebit of ground cinnamon. And if you like, you can also add nutmeg. My kiddos love homemade applesauce, and when it's warm, they love to sprinklea little cinnamon right on top.So good, this is smelling autumnal.(laughs) Smells so good.Put the apples in one kind of even layer.I think this lid's gonna be alittle too big, but it'll do.So I didn't grow up eatingMcDonald's apple pies, but I have heard storiesthat they were legendarybecause they were deep fried, so they hadthis really great, crispy texture, but now they are baked andso they're still pretty tastybut they don't have thatdelicious crunchy textureor that fried flavor, but I was very fortunateto go to Hawaii a couple years agoand that is the onlylocation in the 50 statesthat still fries theirMcDonald's apple pie. We'll put a link down belowto that full taste testbecause there are certain itemsthat you can only get in Hawaii. And look at all the juicethat's come out of them.Ah, and they're softening up beautifully. So my apples are pretty tart,so I'm going to include anextra tablespoon of sugarand another 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, some cornstarch that has been dissolvedin a little bit of water, andthat will thicken things upalthough this is quite thick already. We need an egg wash, I'mjust gonna crack an egg.And beat it up.That's gonna act as our glue, but it will also be the golden coatingon the outside of the pie.In the KiwiCo recipe it'sactually really great, they talk about types of browningand how things like egg wash, which contain more protein, encourage browning, but so dobasic items like baking soda.So they put pretzels in baking soda bathsor lye water baths tochange the pH on the outsideof the dough so that whenyou put it in the oven, they will brown better and darker.Love science. So now, we're gonna take our puff pastry, gently roll out the pastry.I'm gonna cut this in half lengthwise --5 by 2 1/2-inch rectangles.Whatever size rectangles work bestfor your pastry sheets. Now we're gonna take someof our apple pie filling, and place it in the middle.Don't want to overstuff thesebecause we don't want them to burst.Brush around the perimeter, take its matching mate, flipit right on top, and press. And give this a littlepress all the way aroundto help the edges seal together. We're gonna slash this with our knifeso that the pie can vent.Paint this with more eggwash and then sprinklea little bit of coarse sugar on top, then pop them into apreheated, 400-degree ovenand bake them for 15 minutes.Lovelies, the applepies look so good, look! All puffed to perfection.Yes, I love puff pastry, love it.Frozen, thaw it, just cut it, use itand it puffs beautifully.(happy music)Lovelies, I'm so happywith how these turned out,and I cannot wait to taste these.Alrighty, I'm gonna grab this one, yeah.Hello, beautiful, hello.Look how that egg wash gavethat beautiful yellow sheento the top of it, gorgeous.Itadakimasu!Mm.Did you see that puffof steam that came outwhen I bit into that?(laughs)Did you hear that light and flaky crunch?Mm-hmm.So stinking hot and lovely.I love the use of thegranny smith apples in this. They're nice and tart and way less sweetthan the McDonald's version. If you're really cravingthat sweet, sweet flavor, then I would add anothertablespoon of sugar, but for me, this is just right.(happy music)So hot.Whoo!Ah.The apples are wellcooked and nice and softand creamy, but they have aburst of that fresh tartnessand apple flavor. There's sugar in therebut it's not overly sweet, the puff pastry crisps up really nicelyon the outside so it'slike a flaky crunch. It's more like an apple turnover to mebecause of the texture, less than pie.The crust isn't like a short pie crust,it's more like a turnover, but still, absolutely delicious, lovely cinnamon-y flavor. If you'd like to add nutmeg to this,by all means, I think that'sa classic combination, but these are really great and simple.Do they taste like the McDonald's ones? Not entirely. The last one I had waswhen I was in Hawaiiand that one had a magnificentcrunch on the outside, but it had a completelydifferent kind of pastry shell. But this is delicious in its own right. All right my lovelies, there you have it.That's a homemade versionof the McDonald's apple pie.I say it's totally worth making, especially if you're using puff pastrybecause it's so stinking easy.Alrighty, thanks again for watchingand big thanks to KiwiCofor sponsoring this
