Torture Testing Cheap vs Expensive Dremel Tools

**The Great Rotary Tool Showdown**

We started with three rotary tools at first. I was a little sad because I wanted to pick the DeWalt right and so on. A few of our tests we saved some time with the Dremel, but we didn't see a better result. Right, the cheaper ones kept up just fine, and when it came to durability, Dremel didn't do as good as I thought it would.

WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enoh jerry too much power you don't know what to do with those hours i'm good now and testing dremel tools today joby i can't wait and that's why i came to work today with a 22 harbor freight rotary tool a 40 amazon rotary tool and 120 dremel brand dremel rotary tool do you really need to spend six times as much for the brand name or can you get away with some cheaper options uh joe why are you cutting that rope with that dremel because we're celebrating jeremiah celebrating what hang on a huge thanks to ebay motors for sponsoring this entire season of tool party ebay motors was the reason we got to make hilo season 2 and money pit season 2 and now we are stoked to have them sponsor this show ebay motors is one of the only websites where you can buy cars parts and even tools and speaking of tools you'll see us fussing with a whole bunch of tools this season and thanks to ebay they'll be adding links in the description below on every episode so you can buy the exact tools we use on this show and with ebay's awesome money back guarantee you'll get the tool you ordered or your money back it's that simple ebay motors is a big supporter of donut so show them some support by clicking the link in the description below to shop the tools that you see in today's episode plus a whole lot more hey there's a second rope here i'm going to cut that one no don't do that wrong come on i think i don't just cut ropes you see that you don't know who put that there i'm sorry and we have here three variable speed rotary tools wow rotary tools i thought these are called dremels well they are called rimmels because that's just kind of like the brand name that is associated with this sort of like kleenex everybody calls tissues kleenex that's right i mean these these things are super handy you see them all the time they're good for a lot of stuff you can sand you can grind you can carve you can engrave and you can do all sorts of stuff around the house but we're going to be focusing on more garage-borne tasks today but i think we really need to find out if the name brand lives up to all the hype so to get started let's unbox these hogs and see what they look like let's start with our bottom tier harbor freight special little chicago electric power tools okay you got 1.4 amps that's how much current it draws okay and we can go from 8 000 to 35 000 revs a minute that's pretty fast that's lickety-split and you know not a bad setup for 22 bucks let's see what 40 bucks gets us so the gogzawi from amazon has a range of speed from 8 000 to 30 000 rpm slightly slower than the others yep and it pulls uh 1.3 amps so also slightly lower than the others let's take a look at that dream out so this is 1.8 amps that's so much power and it has a variable speed from 5 000 to 35 thousand rpm okay so it'll go a little slower than the chicago one but maxes out about the same yep they do the same top speed i'm gonna you know the packaging here is not too bad you get a sleeve and blow motor case well this thing's pretty straightforward 22 bucks i wouldn't be complaining just based on the way it looks the packaging comes with you know a pretty good assortment of accessories let's see what double our money gets us the gox owwie oh it comes with the extendo right that's kind of nice actually but i bet that's going to make the tool worse and from looking at it i'd say it is now i think i might be being tricked by just the looks of this thing but doesn't this look a little bit nicer than this and then the big dog little power pusher the old dremel oh okay kind of package to be honest with you hefty girl that looks like a nice one i like this one do you this one maybe feels a little bit smoother but this feels like beefy it does it does have that like resistance to it that makes it feel like it's quality yeah all right so it seems like the dremel on paper does have an advantage over the cheaper tools but the question is can the cheaper tools keep up with the big boy can they do the same jobs and not make it awful sometimes when you're working on cars you just gotta cut a bolt you just gotta cut that bolt so we've set up a little rig here today we got some bolts from m6 all the way to m14 this is a timed test we're gonna see how far we can go through this in five minutes five minutes for each tool now this test we're gonna try to kind of standardize it so we're testing the tools themselves and not the accessories that come with the tools so that means we're going to be using dremel brand cut off wheels on all three tools a little quick disconnect action so you don't waste a bunch of time let's start off with the harbor freight special are you ready to cut these bolts i'm ready to cut these bolts all right gary three two one oh yeah all right all right it's always smart to unplug your tool when you do wheel changes like this light work baby light works you have 41 seconds left hit it from the other side hit it from the other side ah five minutes oh you're so close jerry oh my god if you had ten more seconds you'd have gotten through it now second on our list is the forty dollar amazon special of the gox away ready five minutes and that's time all right let's see some temps on this thing we got a max of 132.9 she'd have made it like six minutes but i think that dremel might be able to do it i think so too does that thing run on gasoline three two hun fight work damn jerry too much power you don't know what to do with all this power yeah 50 seconds remaining where am i going oh jerry quick quick quick look we're so close look you got it you got it you got it 10 seconds 454. oh man more dramatic than i thought way more dramatic than we needed to be it did it pretty easily and it was pretty obvious this thing's got a little bit more juice in the caboose yeah would you say you got what you paid for i think you got i think 12 times i don't know about 12 times all right jerry you did a great job cutting these bolts i'm proud of you thank you now for our next test let's take a trip outside another thing dremels are super useful for is cutting holes and stuff so we got our wonderful hot rod of a b2300 doesn't this like hog of an engine just get so hot she's sweating in there man what can we do maybe we should cut some holes in this hood and put our swifty little vents on let it breathe a little that's a great idea and what do you know i have just the tools any any bets i think i'm going with the easy pick you know the old big d yeah as you would yeah i'll go harbor freight i'll get the out of here well we've got a hood and we've got some hood vents like we just talked about we're gonna be cutting three identical holes with three different tools and we'll see how they do i think the real winner is gonna be the mazda this has to be perfect nolan loves this truck dude all right jared i'm gonna cut this first hole with the harbor freight tool this is going to be a multi-tip process i'm going to use the cut off wheel to cut the kind of rough shape of the hole i'm going to kind of shy away from the corners and stuff i'll get those finished off with grinding bits and then we've got these sanding drums so between these i'll be able to get the corners nice and clean i hope while you guys are going to be timing me this isn't about time but this is going to be about quality of cut and quality of the job after we're done okay i'm going to call that one hole done is it the most perfectly smooth thing you ever saw no but for what we're doing here it doesn't need to be we'll see how quickly you can do it with the goxae let's try it it actually was surprisingly pretty good it only took one full disc and then a little extra of a second one to be honest it's pretty good it's not gonna need much okay so you did this one i did that one but i kind of want to use the dremel and i feel like you probably do too let's split it in half okay let's half it up you can have the first half okay she's got the most juice for sure yeah now honestly i'm not gonna lie to you it was a little bit unwieldy at times the fact is the dremel costs 120 bucks good point we've got three holes here and they all look to me they look the same so harbor freight wins for you right but the gox way for me i like that it's shorter and stubbier and i like that i could fine tune it wasn't too bad and it was quicker than it was quicker i did it in like i think what 12 minutes well jerry based on the stats i think this might go gox away is it gocaway so factoring in price usability number of bits we used size of body we talked about that it's got the body size for this job so i'm going glax away then chicago electric slash harbor freight and then the dremel wow wow shocking results also a bonus to people in the donut underground discord huge bonus we're gonna engrave our signatures on these and three lucky people on the donut underground discord are gonna get those so if you're not part of the donut underground click that join button down below join us up okay so we've cut some holes we've cut some bolts how about we do what i honestly love using dremel for what's that that is polishing up and cleaning aluminum oh heck i didn't even think of that let's do that let's go hey jerry dude i got a question for you are you polish i am 13 well we're gonna be doing stuff right up your alley next oh we're gonna do some polishing we're gonna polish some metal well we have this fantastic valve cover we broke it off into three little sections here and we'll get a good idea of how well the tools do at polishing i think they're all gonna do pretty similarly with something like this it's really more about the bit in my opinion maybe the drum will go a little bit faster yeah should i start with the harbor frame yeah you have that one i'll take the guac suite all right here we go are you ready i'm ready three two one i'm punish of a nut for this but i like to make sure all the grains go one way let's get some compound on this and we're just gonna apply it on that first i don't know joby i think that's probably pretty good i reckon so i did that little square in seven minutes the harbor franklin did a pretty good job i really would be surprised if we see a better job with the dremel but we're gonna have to keep testing to find out yeah man you guys i got some wee i got i'll be right back i got actually real bad as soon as you touch her down she bogs looks good though but it's not picking up that compound which is kind of weird it's just kind of throwing it all out of the way there we go you just gotta bog it and then it goes slow enough to pick up the polish so you would think that the slow speed wouldn't really matter too much but ultimately it can time four minutes 53 seconds the amount of shine on that compared to this first one is significantly better now i might think that maybe the dremel could show these both up i'm gonna have dreams about being at a dentist tonight what do you think it's definitely the shiniest i would agree it's not really fair that we gave you the trickiest one to get into but you still made it shine i think better than the other two all right i think the dremel did the best job it seems like that's because maybe it was keeping speed up not bogging down like the other ones were i gotta call that a clear win for the dremel this dremel actually has a function to where it can detect if you are bogging down and increase the amount of power outage to the motor so you could keep that constant speed even under load yeah with the go actually it would bog down and i'd have to pick up let it get speed back up and then go back to work but with this you just keep working you just keep working it does all that for you it's smart pretty good feature 120 dollars feature worth not sure if i'm convinced i got to find out which one of these is the fastest oh yes how are we going to test that good old-fashioned drag race and now for the most important test of the night monster trucks we are going to be racing three 164 scared monster trucks they're powered by these rotary tools these puppies are clamped to this board they're already turned on at max speed and they're plugged into this power strip which is turned off as soon as i flip this button the puppies are off to the races so the facts are the harbor freight and the dremel both claim a top speed of 35 thousand rpms where the goat suite says it's got about 30 000 rpms but that's not the whole story it's all about torque ladies and gentlemen kids and adults are you ready okay here we go yellow yellow yellow green wow go actually by a mile by a country freaking mile oh my god i gotta say those puppies are moving at some speed okay so the results there were shocking but since the dust has settled we've taken a look at what was going on and i think we can pretty easily explain why the goxy won so handily the fishing line we were using rode up the the chuck on the thing which is a much bigger diameter than the drill bits we were using that means with every revolution it was sucking up more string pulling the truck quicker towards us so we need to make sure that doesn't happen and do this again but it's okay because you know what we're gonna go bigger and bigger is always better especially when you're polish well i definitely don't want to go home so i guess we got to go big someday someday someday if you think these monster trucks are cool wait till you see what we have in store for you we have ones that are like twice the size fiber free or drainage which rotary tools got the juice all right the second drag race is all lined up yellow yellow green dribble one this second that third oh so we got a one two three yeah one for most to least expensive what the heck okay so now that we clearly know which one of these things is the fastest well i guess it's time to figure out which one of them is the hardest so now we're gonna do the old donut classic and see if these can take a punishment it's time to see if we can separate the boys from the men okay i'm gonna take a casual stroll through the garage like i normally do good job now oh crap just trying to do it oh my god jerry i'm gonna make it okay oh god oh my god are you okay i'm sorry jerry i know you care about this dude it's okay it's okay i honestly don't harbor freight survive the drop test yeah we're probably gonna have to get a little higher hey jerry oh i need that tool down here no problem she's got a little wiggle there oh that's just the bent bit if you look at the collet itself that puppy's spinning pretty true i can feel okay that's a motor the goose is a little cooked yeah okay this took a heavy hit the light still works ready yes oh she's got a wobble yeah oh yeah okay that's kind of a freaking skill i think i would consider that useless yeah it's almost like the harbor freight is the winner so we started with three rotary tools at first you chose the dremel and i was i was a little a little sad because i wanted to pick the drum right and so on a few of our tests we saved some time with the dremel but we didn't see a better result right the cheaper ones kept up just fine and when it came to durability dremel didn't do as good as i thought it would and that's another good point that i think we should really talk about the dremel comes with a two-year limited warranty but anything you buy at harbor freight you can additionally purchase a anything goes warranty for like a tool of this price probably ten ish dollars maybe less you know but sometimes the slow horse wins the race overall the old chicago electric harbor freight takes my heart and it would take my uh my hard-earned money yeah i couldn't agree more hello my name is riley and i'm a friend of the channel and i'm also the artist that made the donut media mural it's finally done after so many sleepless nights snacks red bulls ups and take a casual stroll through the garage like i normally do good job now oh crap just trying to do it oh my god jerry i'm gonna make it okay oh god oh my god are you okay i'm sorry jerry i know you care about this dude it's okay it's okay i honestly don't harbor freight survive the drop test yeah we're probably gonna have to get a little higher hey jerry oh i need that tool down here no problem she's got a little wiggle there oh that's just the bent bit if you look at the collet itself that puppy's spinning pretty true i can feel okay that's a motor the goose is a little cooked yeah okay this took a heavy hit the light still works ready yes oh she's got a wobble yeah oh yeah okay that's kind of a freaking skill i think i would consider that useless yeah it's almost like the harbor freight is the winner so we started with three rotary tools at first you chose the dremel and i was i was a little a little sad because i wanted to pick the drum right and so on a few of our tests we saved some time with the dremel but we didn't see a better result right the cheaper ones kept up just fine and when it came to durability dremel didn't do as good as i thought it would and that's another good point that i think we should really talk about the dremel comes with a two-year limited warranty but anything you buy at harbor freight you can additionally purchase a anything goes warranty for like a tool of this price probably ten ish dollars maybe less you know but sometimes the slow horse wins the race overall the old chicago electric harbor freight takes my heart and it would take my uh my hard-earned money yeah i couldn't agree more hello my name is riley and i'm a friend of the channel and i'm also the artist that made the donut media mural it's finally done after
