This week in the tech news: Wi-Fi vulnerability, WD Super HDD and Apple sued again
**This Week in Tech News**
Hello and welcome to a weirdly storage related episode of this week in the tech news but you know storage needs some lovin'.
**Western Digital Revolutionizes Platter Hard Drives**
First up, Western Digital has revolutionized the way they make platter hard drives. They call it Ma MR and they're calling it a huge breakthrough. Essentially, what Ma MR is, is a way of generating a microwave to actually read the data off the platter. I don't understand this at all, but apparently it leads to much higher density or more data density on the actual platter.
Apparently, how Western Digital has done this is they've created a spin torque oscillator which is pretty much one of the greatest names I've ever heard for anything that actually generates a microwave which then magically happens and somehow you can now read are that much higher densities more quickly. According to Western Digital, this could lead to up to 40 terabyte hard drives.
**Samsung's Next Gen NVMe Drives Spotted**
If you've recently bought a brand new 960 Pro or 960 Evo SSD and you've been worried that they might become obsolete soon, don't worry anymore because well they're obsolete. Samsung's next generation of NVMe drives has been spotted in the wild. The Vietnamese detailer has listed two drives online called the SM nine eight one. There's also going to be an SM nine seven one which is going to be the equivalent of the Evo drive.
Samsung has decided that they're not actually going to split the drives on Evo and Pro anymore. They're going to do it with numbers because apparently companies thrive on having super confusing naming cultures. So, the most confusing thing about these drives though is that they don't seem to perform any differently to the current generation. Hopefully, this is down to the fact there are a oh em drive. But yeah, if you have a 960 Evo Pro, you don't have to be that worried.
**Huge Security Flaw in WPA2 Encryption Software**
This next story is of huge concern to anybody who has a Wi-Fi router. Some Belgian researchers have realized that apparently there's a huge security flaw in the WPA2 encryption software that's used to secure pretty much every Wi-Fi network. The issue is that there's some kind of error between Howard registers the kind of they call it the digital handshake between the device and the Wi-Fi router which means that anybody can pretty easily hack this encryption software.
Which means, basically, there's no point in having it on your Wi-Fi router now. I don't know if this was an issue before and if the Belgian researchers just kept quiet about it that nobody would know. But I guess if you find something like that you should tell people.
**Apple Sued Again Over Patent Infringement**
First of all, Apple has been sued again over patent infringement. They've been ordered to pay 439 million dollars to a company called Burnett X. Now you might just think oh here we go again it's a Apple being sued for patent infringement but the thing is this time it's not as clear-cut that Apple is the bad guy here because the thing is this company vernet X is a patent troll company.
Essentially what they do is they stock up on patents and then wait for companies to infringe kind of vaguely patent-related issues and then just try and sue the crap out of them. And that's essentially what they've done. Apple has been trying to battle this for the last seven years and they've said that they're gonna they're gonna try and appeal this latest ruling as well.
**Microsoft Brings Out Own VR Headset**
And finally, Microsoft has brought out their own developers of VR headset. It's a VR headset that they're gonna bring out through their large network of OEM suppliers companies like Acer Dell and Lenovo. One of the things that makes this VR headset different to any of the other headsets like Vibe or yellow or any of the other ones is that it doesn't need external sensors to read your movement it does all of that internally.
So let's hope that that does something to make people more interested in VR I mean I'm the only thing I've actually heard about VR is the occasional developer saying something about it. I haven't actually heard anything about it from the consumer side since the launch of the HTC buy since then it doesn't seem like anybody really cares anymore anyway thank you very much for watching this has been This Week in Tech News if you like the video please do subscribe
