Modern Quilt Along Tutorial Series- Part 1

The Crafty Gemini's Keys of Float Modern Quilt Design Tutorial: Part 1

Hey everyone, it's Vanessa The Crafty Gemini here and welcome to my channel! I post weekly crafting, cooking, and organic gardening videos right here on my YouTube channel. In this video tutorial, we're kicking off a brand new modern quilt along series, and I'm excited to share this really pretty quilt design with you.

I designed this quilt to be a fun way to get some beginners interested in quilting and also in modern quilting. It's super easy to put together, all you're cutting is a bunch of strips - okay, I know that sounds simple, but trust me, it's true! This quilt is called Keys of Float, and it's a modern quilt design.

When it comes to the definition of modern quilting, it can vary depending on what quilter you ask. However, some common elements that are often seen in modern quilts include bright and bold colors, prints, solid fabrics, negative space (blank space), improvisational piecing, and other fun techniques like the loose wavy quilt design I've done here.

I just did a really loose wavy quilt design here, which you'll see more of in future videos. The binding is also made up of different strips that I put together to create it - I even have some different colors that go around that side of the quilt. And, on this side there's a white chunk, and then on the other side, there's a burgundy colored chunk right here.

The backing of the quilt is also pieced together from scraps left over from making the quilt top. It's not just one large piece, but rather multiple smaller pieces sewn together to create the overall design. The amount of negative space in this quilt allows for some fun quilting designs to be showcased.

If you like modern quilting and want to learn more about different techniques and designs, I highly recommend checking out the Modern Quilt Guild. They're the International Organization for modern Quilters, and they have a wealth of information on their website.

Now, let's talk about the fabrics I used for this quilt. These are all from the textured solids collection by Andover Fabrics, which has tons of really pretty colors. The fabrics are called textured solids because when you feel them, it almost has like a Gauzy or linen feel to it. You can find links in the description box below to where you can purchase this collection.

I used a few different colors from the collection to create this quilt top together. I'll show you what those colors are and how they work together in future videos. For now, let's just say that these fabrics are a great choice for anyone looking for modern quilting inspiration. So, make sure to hit that subscribe button right here so you won't miss out on any of my future videos or this series of course.

If you're going to be following along with this tutorial, please leave me a comment below letting me know that you're joining The Cools along with me. Thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time! Here's your homework for next week: go out and grab all the fabrics we're working with - textured solids by Andover Fabrics. You'll need to get some batting aside from this fabric collection, but other than that, let's get started on cutting those strips tomorrow.
