Creating Beautiful Custom Curtains Without Sewing: A Step-by-Step Guide
My name is Ariel, and I'm both a musician and a fashion designer. Today, I'll be showing you how to make beautiful custom curtains for any window without sewing. To get started, you'll need the following materials: measuring tape, fabric marker, pins, iron, fusible bonding tape, curtain grommets, scissors, and enough fabric to cover the entire window twice with some extra fabric on all sides for hem and fullness.
To begin, measure the width of your window and add 4 inches for hem allowance. Next, measure the height of your window and add 16 inches to ensure there's enough fabric for the grommets to snap into place. Cut your fabric to size, making sure each panel is the full width of the window and accounting for the additional fabric you'll need for hems and fullness. I prefer to make two panels per window to achieve a nice, full look with lots of folds.
Preparing the Hems
When preparing the hems on my curtains, I start by folding in 4 inches at the bottom of the fabric. This creates a beautiful, clean edge that will prevent any raw material from showing. To press the fold flat, I use my iron to smooth out any wrinkles. However, there's nothing quite like a double turn hem – where you fold the raw edge twice and press it flat to create a more substantial hem that keeps the curtain hanging straight.
To add an extra layer of stability to my hems, I use fusible hem tape. This adhesive tape is specifically designed for sewing and can be applied between layers of fabric or directly to the wrong side of the material. It's incredibly useful when you don't have a lot of time to sew by hand or prefer not to work with needles.
Inserting Seam Tape
Once my hems are in place, I move on to attaching seam tape. This type of tape is designed for sewing and comes pre-sewn to allow easy attachment between layers of fabric. By applying it along the edges of my curtains, I'm able to ensure a smooth, flat finish without the need for additional stitching.
Adding Double Hems
With my hems securely attached and seam tape in place, I proceed to create double hems on each side of the curtain panel. While the hem on the bottom is 4 inches wide, the one on the top is only 1 inch. This creates a more balanced look and prevents any excess fabric from rolling over or hanging unevenly.
Inserting Grommets
For the grommets that will allow you to hang your curtains by rod, I use pre-made metal circles with attached wire hooks. These are designed specifically for this purpose and come in various sizes depending on the size of your curtains. The process is quite simple: cut a small slit at the top of each curtain panel where you want the grommet to be placed. Then, slide the grommet through the opening until it sits flush against both sides.
Choosing the Right Grommets
There are different types of grommets available in various sizes and materials, so it's essential to choose the ones that fit your curtains best. Some come with decorative covers for added style or may have additional features like cord hooks for hanging tassels or garlands. Take a moment to browse through different options to find those that suit your design preferences.
Using Grommets
By carefully attaching grommets at regular intervals along the top of my curtains, I create an easily removable and adjustable mechanism for hanging them up on rods. When you want to hang your curtain, simply slide the hook over a rod and attach it securely in place.
Final Touches
To complete the look of my custom curtains, I make sure everything is perfectly aligned. Once hung correctly, they provide a perfect balance between style and functionality without requiring any additional sewing skills or equipment beyond using fusible tape for hems.
Let’s Hang Our Curtains Up!
With these easy steps, your own beautiful, handcrafted curtains are now hanging in your window. They add that touch of elegance to your space that you might not have thought possible with such a simple, straightforward process.

sides so now I'm going to prepare the hems I'm starting with the bottom of my Fabric and I just want to fold it in 4 in now I can press it flat with my iron now I have this nice 4in hem but I actually want to fold it in one more time which will hide this raw Edge so I'll just fold it in another 4 in it's a double turn hem and I will press it flat this is going to create some nice weight to the bottom of my panel that way the curtain hangs nice and straight now I have this beautiful double turn hem but there's nothing really keeping it in place so this is where my fusible hem tape really helps me out just measure about the length of this here I'm going to insert it right in between these layers and once I get this hot with my iron it will melt and turn into a glue that holds everything together now I'll flip it around I'll repeat these steps on the top so I will fold it in 4 in press it flat fold it in again and press it flat next I'll insert my seam tape and then just press it with my iron I finished my top and bottom hems now I'll do a double hem on each side this is the same technique as earlier but I'm not going to make them quite as wide so I'm going to iron this down an inch I'm going to do this all the way down the length of the panel just like before I'm just going to fold it one more time now I have two 1in folds so this is where my fusible hem tape will come into play you can measure it going all the way down or you can just kind of iron it as you go so insert it in just like this between the layers take your iron and melt the glue next repeat these steps with the other side I've got my hems all finished so now I'll insert my grommets these grommets are awesome because they just snap into place you don't need any tools and they're so easy I'll show you how now I'm going to Mark the place where my grommets go I'm using this template that came with the package going to line this up 2 and 1/4 in in from The Edge to the center and space them out evenly I'm going to take care to cut through both layers of fabric try to stay right within the edge if your circles aren't especially beautiful no one will see them because the edges of your grommets will just cover that up you can see there are different kinds of grommets in the packaging you can tell the front because of the little lip and the back has the prong just going to slide the circle over the lip here and I'm going to snap it into place with the back gr it I've got my first gromet in place and now I'm going to do the rest just going to line everything up and using the palm of my hand just pushing down till I hear it snap you can see how amazing this looks let's go hang it up noo curtains are an easy way to spruce up a room and no one will even guess that you made them
