The Importance of Data Backup and Storage: A Personal Perspective
As I sit here reflecting on my recent experience with data backup, I am still fuming about it. It's been weeks since this incident occurred, but my frustration hasn't subsided. I've always believed that backing up one's data is crucial, whether it's for personal or business purposes. The fact that companies are willing to compromise on their customers' trust by offering unlimited storage options, only to reduce them later, is absolutely absurd.
I've even undertaken a project of backing up something like 200 VHS tapes, which I'll have a separate video on in the future. Like data backup, even on a personal level, not just for a business level is so important and the fact that companies are so willing to just screw you over so they can entice customers to come in with a unlimited budget first and then reduce it later is just absurd. Frankly, I've been pissed off about this situation, and I wanted to make this video a week ago but just don't know what to say about it.
I don't know if anyone has had a similar experience or insight into the situation, but I'm still venting my thoughts and frustrations. Data storage services are a lot of people won't trust the big companies like Google, Amazon, and Dropbox because they're a big company and they're potentially likely to abuse your data do not abuse it but like misuse it to use it to farm it to scan it to have other privacy or maybe get you in trouble for having pirated material issues. Uh with the bigger companies but I won't trust the smaller companies because they're so fleeting because I've had too many instances of these weird concept cloud storage companies that had ridiculous amounts of storage options that then just disappeared.
People have commented and asked if I have like a alternative recommendation or something, but honestly, I don't. That's it's a catch-22 with data storage services is a lot of people won't trust the big companies like Google Amazon and Dropbox and so on because they're a big company and they're potentially likely to abuse your data do not abuse it but like misuse it to use it to farm it to scan it to have other privacy or maybe get you in trouble for having pirated material issues uh with the bigger companies but I won't trust the smaller companies because they're so fleeting because I've had too many instances of these you know weird concept cloud storage companies that had ridiculous amounts of storage options that then just disappeared.
I don't really have an alternative because everyone who has launched with unlimited storage so far has wound up just leaving with it. I honestly don't know, and I guess I'm going to have to invest in some more storage service for my rack because I am probably approaching 100 terabytes of working data like active drives at the moment and that very little of that accounts for like a backup or a parody of any of that. The fact that I've lost so much data is always my biggest danger with all this drive storage is I am so desperate for storage space that I don't have the drive capacity to have any sort of parody Or backup.
I'll keep you guys posted as to what my options or Alternatives wind up being, but I don't know what to tell you other than invest in your own proper drop you know driver storage drives and backup servers and Nas units and off-site backups that you can sore at a family member's house or something. There are some options where you could run your own cloud set up a VPS with FTP server something but yeah I also wanted to mention people over at vid sent me a shirt they sent me some socks around Christmas.
They sent me a shirt it's pretty cool I love the grayish texture I don't know how well it shows up on camera it's super soft it fits perfectly I'm super grateful I haven't actually had a chance to make a video about vidme yet um on my YouTube channel because this will be going on vidme too but if you are interested vidm is kind of an alternative to YouTube at the moment. It's another video platform and they have a huge focus on benefiting the creators and I would like to see them succeed.
I have a channel over there by the way it does offer a subscription model that's kind of like an alternative to patreon or twitch Subs where you can just send me five bucks a month cuz you like me. I don't know if you want to check me out vim.com box I'm over there this isn't like a sponsored spot it's just I was wearing the shirt because it was comfortable it's in the video I wanted to mention it.
Hope you enjoy Also let me know what you think about this set this shooting space I just kind of impromptu sat on my couch and flipped up the lifx lights back there and thought it looked kind of cool let me know what you think and again let me know your thoughts in the comment section down below How Deeply you're affected by this I don't know how many terabytes people have but for those who are worried about their data like they should be, just take it from me.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enyou know I I want to say that I can't even be mad since I essentially predicted that this would happen everyone predicted that this would happen but I don't think it's right to say that you can't be mad about getting bad news just because you knew the bad news was coming I could be wrong but that's how I see it so if you're unaware the Amazon Cloud Drive service just released an announcement stating that they are no longer going to be offering Unlimited storage which to me was the whole point of using it you could still use it as a Fairly reliable backup but it's going to be expensive now it's actually it's still the cheapest option for the bulk storage that they offer but it's still expensive so if you're just completely contextless right now back in probably July of last year I released a video reviewing my P my six or eight months at the time with the Amazon Cloud Drive Service as an unlim backup as I needed some sort of cloud you know third stage backup for all of my data especially since during 2016 I had a lot of hard drive failures and actually lost quite a bit of data and Amazon Cloud Drive seemed to be the solution Amazon offered uh unlimited unlimited you know data backup and cloud storage on Amazon servers for $60 a year and I got my first year for $5 from a Black Friday sale back in 2015 fast forward now I've been been using it quite heavily it's been a very important part of my workflow and I've actually even had to recall data from the service so I've been using it and I use it to share files that's how my Game Vault channel was working uh that's I I I've been using it heavily and I have almost 40 terabytes uploaded to the service of backups public share files uh Cold Storage Archives of things that I do have a copy of here but I don't have another way of backing up that bulk of data 40 terabytes that is a lot of data to even create a single you know a single point backup of that data wouldn't mean needing 40 more terabytes of hard drives on my own plus I still have another 20 terabytes or so that I haven't backed up yet just because of the upload restraints on my internet connection so I have 40 terabytes up there and last week Amazon just announced that they're not offering you know the they're not offering unlimited service anymore instead you can pay $60 per terabyte to use their cloud storage what you what yeah $60 per terabyte per year the and what's funny since again keep in mind I'm at 3738 terabytes right now about I think um so close to 40 terabytes when it says like I still have which I'll talk about in a minute I still have unlimited for a little while but to uh the plans that they do offer the upgraded plans the one that it recommends for me is 30 terabytes for $1,800 per year $1,799 70 per year and to scale that you know even further to allow me room to to grow would be closer to $2,500 per year I don't make that kind of money uh my business does not bring in that kind of money not that I'm supposed to be using it for business I've been treating it very much as a personal backup to avoid those issues but it's still a problem and what I found hilarious is that is the highest tier that they currently list as a plan they have they they pop it up in the top right hand corner and it says you know we recommend this plan 30 terabytes for $1,800 a year except they they they don't have anything higher than 30 terabytes so even when I click learn more to just learn more it's like oh sorry you you you have too much data for for this plan so we can't accommodate you and then I click view all plans and that's the highest plan they offer what what are we supposed to do there are some people who and and they're probably part of the problem which is part of the issue here but this is going to happen with every cloud service so they need to address that problem instead of punishing all users but part of the problem is there are some users who upload like a ridiculous amount like I know some people on the data hoarder subreddit who have 200 terabytes 400 terabytes a ridiculous amount of data someone even uploaded an entire petabyte uh sometime earlier in the year or late 2016 they managed to get an entire petabyte pushed up to Amazon and that's costing Amazon a lot of money so it's understandable that they wouldn't willing to limit that but then don't sell your cloud service as unlimited and this is where my biggest problem comes in because this is a trend this has happened on more than one occasion is a company will want to offer a new cloud storage option to the masses and the way they try to Garner attention for that is by saying hey we'll give you unlimited storage for this ridiculously for affordable price our client may be buggy we may be new to the game but you can store whatever you want and of course those of us with ridiculous data needs come in and we're like hell yeah and we store some data and they're then they're like ah we can't really hold that much data so we're going to need you to pull back how the are we like what am I supposed to do with my 30 terabytes on their cloud like okay so they don't like some Services did like a grandfather thing where if you were one of the first people and you did you know the unlimited storage initially hello PUD you would be grandfathered in and have unlimited storage at least until they just decide to kick you out Amazon Cloud Drive isn't doing that instead they're just running out your plan basically until you have you have unlimited storage until your plan runs out because probably no one just recently bought a plan and they are offering refunds for those who just bought the plan within 30 days um so I have I do have a friend um who who's plan literally expired the day after that announcement which is just total so he had like no warning I'm lucky enough I still have like five months or so my plan runs until the end of November so I have until November to upload everything I can and just hope they keep it as like a cold storage so I can have it up there as a cold storage but then I will be completely unable to use Amazon Cloud because my account will be full and there's no way to even even if I had that kind of money which I do not there's no way to access it I guess after that point other than just knowing that they have it backed up hopefully I don't I don't know and that's frustrating so to clarify a couple details they are un they are ending the unlimited cloud storage through the actual Amazon Cloud Drive program they still have the Amazon photo service where everyone gets free 5 GB of storage and then all Amazon Prime members get unlimited photo storage which include some raw files they've actually expanded which raw files are compatible and jpegs and you know image files but not videos you only had like 5 gigs for videos not normal files anything like that um so you can still use the mobile phone backup app you can still use um the prime photos backup service you just can't use Amazon Cloud so I'm pretty frustrated and I honestly I don't know what my point for this video is I am tired of this of the trend of companies doing this of showing up and saying hey here's unlimited data because data backup is so important and it's a serious thing you can't just throw it around back and forth you can't just be like oh I'll back up everything to Dropbox oh Dropbox doesn't like me anymore I'll back up to Google Drive I'll back no for for backups you need consistency you need reliability my cat is rubbing on the camera I apologize come on PUD what are you doing to me like it's it's a serious business and I've really been letting my inner archiver like come out to play in the past few months and i' I've even undertaken a project of backing up something like 200 VHS tapes which I'll have a separate video on but like data backup even on a personal level not even for a business level is so important and the fact that companies are so willing to just screw you over so they can entice customers to come in with a unlimited budget first and then reduce it later is just absurd and frankly I've been pissed I wanted to
