How to Crochet a Flower with Crafty Gemini

Creating a Crocheted Flower: A Step-by-Step Guide

The first step in creating a crocheted flower is to start with a chain one stitch. This stitch will serve as the foundation for our flower, and it's essential to remember that it's a space between two double crochet stitches. To create this stitch, we'll start by making six double crochet stitches in the designated area. The goal is to achieve a little fan-like shape, with each double crochet stitch counting as one post.

As we move forward, we'll need to insert our yarn and make single crochet stitches in the next available open chain one space. This will create the petals of our flower. It's crucial to remember that the tall ones are actually the double crochet stitches, so we'll aim for six more double crochet stitches in each subsequent petal.

We'll continue this process all the way across the strip, creating multiple layers and petals until we reach the end. The final step is to pull a little bit up, grab our scissors, and cut off the excess yarn, leaving a tail. Then, we'll use our tapestry needle to secure the layers together, starting at one end and rolling it up tightly in the middle.

As we roll the flower, we want to make sure the layers are secure and even. Some people may struggle with knots on their crochet projects, but I find that tying a knot is an essential step. In this case, we'll use the longer tail end to tie off the project, while burying the shorter tail end by rethreading it through the stitches.

If you want to attach the flower to another project, such as a headband or hat, you can use the longer tail end to stitch it down securely. To finish the flower, we'll simply tuck any stray threads under the petals and trim them off with scissors.

To give this flower some extra stability, I like to add a few whip stitches going through all the layers, making sure they're secure and even. This is where you can get creative and experiment with different stitching patterns or techniques.

Once we've finished securing the layers, it's time to sew the flower shut. For me, the easiest way to do this is by tying a knot at the end of the tail end. If needed, I'll use a small amount of yarn to tuck any stray threads under the petals and trim them off with scissors.

The result is a beautiful crocheted flower that can be attached to various projects or used as a standalone decoration. I hope you've enjoyed learning how to create one, and I'd love for you to share it with your friends and family on social media using the hashtag #crochetflower. thing that I like about the bomb bumps is that you get eight different colors in one bundle so it's a great way for you to try out different colors without having to purchase the eight huge skeins of each of the colors that you want to try out so it's a great way to experiment and to create these little types of flowers now before we jump into the tutorial let's briefly go over the crochet basics that you need to know in order to create this flower that will include how to do your slipknot your chain stitches single crochet and double crochet stitches if you have no idea what I'm talking about or maybe you're just a complete beginner to crochet don't worry cuz I got you covered I've already created a how to crochet beginners video series you can click on the image right here to go to the full video playlist for all those videos and if you watch the first three in the playlist those three videos will cover all the basics you need to know in order to get started with this flower project so once you have that you can meet me back here and for those of you that already know the basics let's get started and so these six packs that I have here actually the one that I'm giving away in the giveaway that we're hosting thanks to our friends at brand yarns so two lucky winners are gonna get three bundles each and to enter the giveaway make sure you finish watching the rest of this video the details will be at the end of it for you so let's move these out of the way get started with our tutorial in this video tutorial I'll be teaching you guys how to make some really cute flowers using the bomb bombs by Lion Brand yarn when I'm looking at patterns online I like to access them on my phone or my tablet so I'm gonna pull this up for you guys on my phone here the pattern is a free pattern I'll include a link in the description box below on where you can go to access it but just keep in mind that you do need to create a free account with Lion Brand yarns on their website we are going to be following the directions for the one color flower that you see here if you want to later on you can try the two color flower but I won't be teaching you how to do that in this tutorial but I did make a sample just so you can get an idea and here is one I did the same thing that we're gonna do with the yellow and then I went back and you single crochet just around the top edge to give it that second color for today we're just gonna stick to the one color so the bumbum that I'll be using here calls for inside I crochet hook or size 9s five point five millimeters so grab that and let's start with a slipknot now the pattern says with the color of my choice chain and then it says 17 and if Brenda sees you'll see a 35 and a 53 so if you want to do the small you're just gonna change 17 for the medium one you'll change 35 and for the larger chain 53 for the purposes of this video I'm gonna go ahead and go with the medium so let's go with 35 so we change our 35 now we start with Row 1 Row one says DC in fifth CH from hook that means double crochet that's DC in the fifth ch means chain from the hook so let me take my hook out so you can see this so they all look like these little v-shape things you see 1 2 3 4 & 5 so this is the 5th one okay we don't count this one because that's the one that the hook is in so I'm going to double crochet in the 5th chain from the hook so again 1 2 3 4 5 this one for double crochet remember we always grab yarn first so yarn over grab the yarn and then you're gonna go into that fifth loop from the hook then you grab yarn come through one grab yarn go through two grab the yarn go through the two that's a double crochet and then you see an asterisk and an asterisk is now letting you know that whatever instructions are coming after that are gonna be a full sequence that's going to be repeated somehow so asterisk first so it's starting a new sequence this is chain 1 skip next stitch then in parenthesis it says DC which is double crochet chain 1 double crochet in the next stitch and then it says V stitch main so this can be really really confusing for beginners so let's just follow along basically the sequence is you're gonna chain 1 skip the next stitch in line then you're gonna do a double crochet chain 1 and double crochet in that next one so we just did this double crochet now the next step is to chain 1 so real simple we chain 1 then the next thing says skip the next stitch so this double crochet is in this one so now I'm gonna skip this little one here and come to the next one and in the next one it says double crochet chain 1 double crochet so I go in here double crochet chain one and in the same stitch we want to double crochet remember you always grab yarn first for double crochet before you go in your stitch come out to and come up the last two so now look what we have so this chain here counts as a double crochet and another double crochet then you have your chain one where you skip the stitch so we have this opening here then we did a double crochet chain one and another double crochet in the same stitch so this is exactly where we want it to be because in this hole it's where we'll come back on the third round and stuff all these other double crochets in there to create that fluff top petal so now let's keep going so now we repeat it again chain one skip the next stitch so you see how these double crochets are in here we're gonna skip this one here and come into the next one four double crochet remember you always grab yarn first then go in your stitch there's one double crochet then chain one and a double crochet again in the same stitch so I grab yarn go right back in the same stitch and do that double crochet and you just keep doing that till you get to the end of your little chain here okay even if you lose your place just look back and try and figure out the pattern I see two double crochets here in one stitch there's a space then two double crochets in one stitch there's a space I have one double crochet so I know the next thing is to what chain one and go right back to do another double crochet in the same stitch I already did and remember to go back in and do that second double crochet that you need to do in that last stitch okay so we did our foundation chain stitches then we did our first row of all these double crochets and setting up the spaces that we need to go back in and now insert our petals so to begin the second row now we're reading the pattern and it says chain three and parenthesis after that it says counts as DC or double crochet now whenever you turn your work so if we're working straight like this right we came this way on the chains and we went that way to create all this first row and now we're going back so to turn obviously I can't keep crocheting this way I have to turn my work over this way so I can come back and stitch this wait so when you turn your work and you start off you always are going to start off with some type of chain stitches because you need to create height you can't just jump right into whatever the stitch is so in this case the pattern and most of the time the patterns will tell you it says chain three so one two three okay and remember in parentheses it says acts like a double crochet so the reason for that is that when we're doing double crochet and we turn the height of a double crochet which is this year right these are all double crochets the height of it is about the same height as three chain stitches so this is counting as a double crochet that's why it says counts as double crochet and then it says five double crochet in the chain one space of the first V stitch so those are our V stitches and if I tug on it you can see it kind of looks like a V so we're gonna crochet 5 double crochet stitches inside the V stitches so remember we said this one here was our first V okay so these are our first double crochet there and so we're gonna do five double crochets inside here alright so for double crochet we always grab your yarn first I'm opening this up a little bit so you can see I'm coming in between those two and I'm gonna do five double crochets so that's one but remember the first three chains that we did you see how now I did three chains and then we just did a real double crochet and it's the same height so this is the one that the pattern says that it's acting as our double crochet so really we now have two okay so when the pattern says to make five that means you really needed six and you'll see because then afterwards the pattern tells you and all the remaining ones to do six double crochets so I only did five double crochets but the first three chains that we did is counting as my sixth one so you can see how it's starting to look like a petal so moving on to the next instructions it says single crochet in the next chain one space now remember we did double crochet then we change one and skip the stitch underneath in the bottom row so that's the empty space that they're talking about that's that the next chain one space so we want to do a single crochet so single crochet we just go through it we don't grab yarn first and we just pull through these two so there's my single crochet so after that then we're gonna go back six double crochet in the chain one space of the next V stitch so remember this is a chain one that was in between the two double crochets we did in that one and so we're gonna do six so we want it to look like a little fan like this as well and this is my next V stitch right here okay so I'm gonna do my six double crochet in there grab yarn first go in and six now we're really starting to get these petals so again this is a space in-between right because there's no double crochets coming out of there the next ones are here so in this open chain one space it says two single crochet so we'll single crochet in there and then we're going right back to our V so remember we got to fit in six double crochets in here so grab my yarn and do my six double crochet and if you ever lose your place counting don't be afraid to like pull on your on your work and stretch it out you can put it like this to see because remember the tall ones here are each of the double crochets so here's one post so one two three four five and six double crochets so I did six and that one I can move on to my single crochet in the next open space and then go back into this next V stitch here and put in six more double crochet and we continue all the way across till we finish our entire little strip here and six there's my last one so at the end what you want to do is pull a little bit up grab your scissors leave yourself a tail here cut it so this is all you have left and pull that cut end that you just cut through the loop and give it a nice tight pull and that will secure it so that's it your cut away from your yarn and we're ready to start rolling up our flower now you can start on either and it's not gonna matter but I have my longest tail here so grab your tapestry needle and your yarn feed it through there and now starting on one end we're gonna just roll this up in the middle I like to do it tightly so you get that little center bud and as you go just take a couple stitches to secure it there at the bottom and continue rolling stitching just make sure you're grabbing those layers and continue rolling and notice I'm not rolling it up I like to put them a little bit flat and push them out flat like this so flip this over and at this point then you can start doing some like whip stitches just going through all the layers and there's really no like rhyme or reason I'm not going to like a specific stitch when I'm sewing this up I just want to make sure that the layers are secure and then some people really have a problem with making knots on their crochet projects but I don't and since this flower is going to be stitched down to something else since I had the other tail end here I'm just going to go ahead and tie them as a knot I can go back and bury the shorter tail and then I'll leave this longer tail to help me stitch the flower down to whatever project I'm going to stick it on so like I just tie this off this one I'll leave to tie on to the project say a headband or something and then this one I'm going to rethread it cuz that's the other end of the knot and I'm just gonna weave it through here going every car which way doesn't matter we're just to bury this thing in here somewhere and that's that you bury it in there give it a little stretch and that last little thing that's sticking out I just chop it and just fix it up a little bit with your hands if you need to use this last one here to help you stitch some other things in place you can feel free to do that as well but this flower looks pretty cute to me I like the way that looks so that's it for this video tutorial I hope you enjoyed learning how to create a crocheted flower if you
