The Mazda RF is a sleek and sporty car that offers a unique twist on the classic Miata design. With a top weight of only 2,450 pounds, it's like having a fat eight-year-old in your trunk - but in a good way! The RF looks stunning with the top up, making you want to keep it that way.
However, if you're someone who enjoys being topless and loves the thrill of ghost riding, this car is perfect for you. It only takes 13 seconds to drop the top, which can be opened or closed depending on your speed - ideal for short, leisurely drives at speeds up to six miles per hour.
While the Miata itself may not be the fastest car out there, the RF is all about handling and corners. Mazda has built the Miata entirely around the driver and their interaction with the vehicle, making it a joy to drive. The RF weighs in at 2,450 pounds, making it insanely tossable and fun - an exact opposite of my dad!
The front suspension features lightweight forged aluminum uprights and double wishbones designed specifically for the Miata. If you get the six-speed transmission, I highly recommend it, as it's ridiculously good. You'll also get Bilstein dampers, a front shock tower brace, and an LSD to take your driving experience to the next level.
The transmission is truly amazing, with a smooth shift that makes sitting in traffic like I am right now totally bearable. But it also makes bombing through the canyons exhilarating! The Miata also boasts something its competitors, like the Toyota 86 and BRZ, don't have - torque throughout the rev range.
The interior is cozy and classic, with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and e-brake handle that feels very toasty. You'll also appreciate the three-way heated seats, smart keyless entry with push-button start, a Bose nine-speaker stereo, and two USB ports. It's a lot of stuff, but it's not overwhelming.
The RF strikes a nice balance between driver focus and modern convenience features like blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic detection - very handy standard items, especially for those who struggle with blind spots, like my dad! These rear buttress guys make the blind spots pretty huge, so they do see ghosts sometimes, which can be annoying.
The RF Club trim comes with all that goodness and some pretty good-looking 17-inch gunmetal wheels for under $32k. If you want to pony up almost $4,000 more, Mazda will give you forged BBS wheels that look very nice on it, and Brembo front brakes painted red - what choice!
I love driving supercars, but honestly, most of the time when I'm driving them, I'm frustrated looking around for the next open stretch of road. The RF is different; it's an attainable level of performance where you can drive the piss out of it and look down to see speeds like 40 miles per hour.
The Miata perfectly fulfills Mazda's philosophy of "jinbai" - it means horse and rider as one, and it really does feel like this car is an extension of you. Even with all this new tech on board, the RF feels unmistakably Miata.
Mazda did a heck of a job in creating a driving experience that's just plain fun.
