My Cable Management sucks, let's fix it! - Part 1

The Importance of Cable Management and Desk Upgrades: A Personal Experience

As I sit at my desk, I'm reminded of the importance of maintaining a clutter-free workspace. A month ago, I had a sticky pad stuck on my desk that had been there for what felt like an eternity. It was causing me to think about upgrading my desk setup, not just for aesthetics but also for functionality and organization. In this article, I'll take you through the process of upgrading my desk, cable management, and the importance of these upgrades.

The Sticky Pad Debacle

I started by examining the sticky pad that had been stuck on my desk for a month. It was clear that it needed to be removed immediately. I turned on my hairdryer and carefully warmed up the area around the sticky pad. Using a little iFixit scraper, I gently scraped off the sticky pad, hoping not to leave any residue behind. To my surprise, the process went smoothly, and there were no signs of damage or residue left.

The Power Strip Upgrade

Next, I moved on to upgrading my power strip. The old four-socket power strip was no longer sufficient for my needs, as I had accumulated more devices than it could handle. After researching online, I found a six-socket power strip that could accommodate all my devices. I plugged in the new power strip and tested it, relieved to see that it worked seamlessly without any issues.

Tape Trouble

To secure the cables and keep them organized, I needed to find a reliable tape solution. I opted for double-sided 3M tape, which seemed like the best option at the time. However, as soon as I applied the tape, I realized that it was not as strong as I had hoped. The tape started coming off easily, and I was left wondering if I had made the right choice.

A Second Chance with Double-Sided Tape

Undeterred by my initial experience with double-sided tape, I decided to give it another try. This time, I applied two layers of tape, hoping that it would provide better adhesion. To my surprise, the tape held surprisingly well, and I was able to secure the cables without any issues.

Cable Management: The Key to a Clutter-Free Workspace

With the sticky pad removed and a new power strip in place, I turned my attention to cable management. Using white velcro cable ties, I began to organize the cables behind my desk. By securing them with these cable ties, I was able to keep my workspace tidy and clutter-free.

Desk Upgrades: The Electric Desk Makeover

As part of my upgrade process, I also decided to focus on improving my electric desk. With a new power strip in place, I plugged in the devices that needed it, including my Canon G7x mark II battery charger. To address the issue of the desk sliding around due to the lack of rubber pads, I purchased some small rubber pieces and attached them to the bottom of the desk.

The Finished Product: A Clutter-Free Workspace

With all the upgrades complete, I stepped back to admire my newly organized workspace. The electric desk was now functioning smoothly, and the cables were neatly secured behind it. My Canon G7x mark II battery charger was safely plugged in, ready to charge my batteries. As I looked around, I felt a sense of satisfaction knowing that I had taken control of my workspace and created a clutter-free environment.

The Importance of Upgrades: A Personal Experience

Throughout this experience, I learned the importance of upgrading and maintaining one's workspace. By addressing issues such as cable management and desk upgrades, I was able to create a more organized and functional workspace. This experience has taught me that even small changes can make a significant impact on my productivity and overall well-being.

Ethernet Cable: The Final Touch

As I finished up the final touches on my workspace, I realized that I had overlooked one crucial component – the Ethernet cable. I attached the cable to the leg of my desk, ensuring that it was securely fastened in place. With this last touch, I felt a sense of completion, knowing that my workspace was now fully functional and organized.

ASR Issues: A Minor Hiccup

In a surprising turn of events, my electric desk suddenly stopped working due to an ASR issue. However, after recharging it and restarting the process, everything went back to normal. I breathed a sigh of relief, grateful that this minor hiccup was resolved without any lasting damage.

Conclusion

Upgrading my workspace has been a transformative experience that has taught me the importance of organization and maintenance. By addressing issues such as cable management and desk upgrades, I have created a clutter-free environment that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. This article serves as a testament to the power of upgrading and taking control of one's workspace.

the first link in the video description to begin saving money online now hello everyone I'm M welcome back to tech block today we're gonna be redoing the kit management in my setup on both desks I guess as we have this desk over here you know my main setup and then we also have this monstrosity here now earlier of the day this was an absolute mess there's like a million things on this desk I've gone ahead and tidied the desk up ever so slightly butter as you can see it's still kind of a mess as we have a bunch of care management supplies we've got some sticky pads now this is what I used to use in the past to mount I guess the power strips beneath my desk and they didn't really hold the power strips for very long I think they held it for like a couple weeks to maybe a month at most I suppose until the power strips fell off and started dangling and then I'm just like screw this I mustn't leave the power strip on top of the desk here so this power strip this full socket one has just been sitting on top of the desk but I think over a month now which doesn't look very good you know who wants to see a power strip there and on top of that you know a bunch of other cables here as well it just don't look good and we're going to change that all today as I showed you in my case unboxing video I also unboxed this piece of kit here this is like a double sided tape I guess from 3m apparently this is meant to be pretty strong probably much stronger than these sticky passes that I had here earlier so I'm hoping that this works and holds the power strip on the desk for longer than a few weeks and if it does then I'll let you guys know and you can buy this as well but for now I don't know this is a good product it might be absolutely awful I'll let you know but we got a 6 socket Paris trip this time as a the full sake one I populated very very quickly and on a side of running out of sockets so what I'm gonna do I think is plug in the 6 socket power strip and then if I need to I'll also add the 4 socket power strip beneath this desk but I doubt I'll be powering me you know 10 devices on desk so I think six sockets for now will be more than enough so that's kind of the plan you know pop this beneath the desk stick it on there and kind of tidy up all of this because this don't look good so that's kind of the plan there and then ask for the main setup here as you can probably see there's a few more devices here that require power rather than just you know like the LED strip my server there yeah there's a there's a few more bits and pieces here so we got the room monitors we have a sound bar and Amazon echo oh dear Lord I think that's everything really okay maybe there's not that many devices oh I just remembered about all the LED strips that are in this setup right we have Philips you play that requires one power socket if we have an LED strip behind the desk where the entire desk that's another socket we have an LED strip for the subwoofer back there that's another socket required and then the PC power comes directly from the wall it's like a five meter a power thing that you can see right there so the PC is not plugged into like an extension cord or anything it has a direct wire going straight into the back of the PC so that's kind of good I guess and I don't really want to be putting too much wattage through these expansion leads especially because I have extension leads going into extension leads and you don't really want to overload them and cause a fire so like all I wanted to say they don't draw nearly enough power as my actual PC does so that's kind of good I guess and I'm trying to balance out the wattage between these freaking extension cords and stuff so I don't start a fire in the house but everything's been fine for the past few years I've been using this kind of setup for a while at one point I even had four monitors and it all worked fine but hopefully everything goes well I also have like these things that I'm going to be attaching beneath my my main setup here now these are like cable management like well it's kind of like cable trunking I guess but you've not as many if you desk and you can't amount all the cables these are called like J channels on Amazon link in description so like all the care management gear manner feature today as I bought them months ago I almost half a year ago I think back when I made my kill management accessories video which if you haven't watched it already it's really good I covered like over a dozen cable management accessories in that video and I think if you watch it you definitely have some some ideas and hopefully it's gonna help you improve care management in your own setup so definitely give that video watch it's really good but if we take a look beneath my desk here this is what we're dealing with here as you can see we have a dangling power strip there because the you know a little sticky pads couldn't really hold it anymore so it's kind of just dangling there and no longer attached to the desk and yeah as you can probably see there's a lot of cables dude there so so many cables and just looking at this now I'm like how the heck am I going to fit this into the J channel that is beyond me but we're gonna try to kill manage everything make things a lot more organized as this clearly is not organized if I want to take a cable out it's pretty annoying and hard to do so the J channel will actually make removing a cable significantly easier for me which is good but yeah this is gonna be a lot of work like Jesus Christ as there are also like her adhesive and stuff like leftover bits of like a self-adhesive foam all over the desk there's loads of all the sticky pads like just stuck on the desk so I'm gonna use a hairdryer that I have here kind of heat them up and then use this iFixit scraper to kind of scrape off any of they like it like leftover adhesive foam or like sticky residue beneath the desk so that's kind of my plan there a hairdryer and one of these bad boards and hopefully we can remove everything with no problem but will that said let's go and jump onto the other desk there as the killer management they will be much much simpler we'll do that one first and then yeah we're gonna have to sort this out as well no yeah let's make sure everything's turned off so there we go it's all off now sick I'm gonna move everything off of the desk I bought like a tracker for my car as well a GPS tracker car reveal comes soon oh it's been raining for the past few days so that's why there's no car here yet I want to film like a decent video I guess and I want the car be clean not covered in freakin dirt and stuff so probably the next week or so the Carville video will come out but stay tuned let's just remove my Synology server my storage server I guess the YouTube man this desk is dusty as hell did we have to sort that out as well it's a bunch of devices here we have my camera battery charger there's a bunch of light dust all over the desk look we don't want no dust up in here what there you might be able to see right there that there's a sticky pad on this desk on the top of the desk right now so I'm gonna turn the hairdryer on and just kind of warm it up and scrape it off hopefully not leave any residue behind as this is the top of the desk I don't want nothing on here and I only realized there's a sticky pad stuck on here now and it's been here for like a month so there we go no more sticky pad and there's no residue left or anything so this is a pretty good method hairdryer and like this little iFixit scraper thing right so there's the four socket power strip that's going away for now and we're replacing it with a six socket power strip instead plug it in right so there you go so receiving power there's like a green surge LED there and a power LED there as well it is search protected it's a 13 amp power strip so we should be fine in terms of wattage this can handle probably don't know 2500 watt something like that so oh yeah don't exceed a 3120 watts so we should be absolutely fine I don't think we'll get anyway in here 3000 watts on this power strip so that's gonna be good now as for this tape here this double-sided 3m tape I don't know how good this is gonna be but I don't know if I should put like two layers on this or just one but I think I'm gonna put two it's to be honest I don't have much hope that this is actually going to be strong so I'm gonna put two layers on here and just hope for the best I guess see like already it's coming off really easily which isn't good there we go we got two layers on there two strips oh my God look at it the heck of I bought these are meant to be good all right I think we're ready right so gonna put it probably like right here now it's on hmm that actually does feel pretty strong and you can barely even move it so first impressions seems good seems good I think I put a lot of tape on that so I hope this holds it now we have to of course sort the cable management out right here so using like some white the velcro cable ties I'm gonna try to like cable tie this to the desk here right my plug-in Philips you so that can go there go we have this one here for the actual desk as this is an electric desk here so plug that in this is kind of a long cable though so we're gonna have to kill manage this guy as well next up the actual slava so plug that right there so right here I have my canon g7x mark - like a battery charger but unfortunately there's no like rubber pads down here so you kind of just slides around and moves about really easily so I have these like rubber pieces for like desks I guess and I'm going to attach a few of these on the bottom here just so it kind of has more grip on the desk and doesn't just slide around all the time and it's going to put one on each corner and hopefully that resolves that problem yeah there we go that's that's much better all right so here is like my charging station I guess we have my cannon battery charger as well as like every chargeable battery charger as well here so I can put other triple-a batteries or double-a batteries in here and just you know recharge them so that's good and this is already looking so much better than it was earlier like this earlier looked like a complete disaster now the way of cable management everything here I guess is mainly through the use of a velcro cable ties and that's pretty much it but this kind of does really matter too much the main thing I want to focus on here managing nicely is the main setup there so this is kind of like but for this setup here velcome cable times will pretty much do the job absolutely fine as it's not too many devices here just a few battery chargers an LED strip and a server but already I filled up five of the six sockets here but ooh my desk what are you doing it says ASR I have no idea what ASR means my electric desk is not functioning Oh it can go down doesn't want to go up though well did you just want to go all the way down first I think that's what I wanted so as you all can see the desk is rising nothing's falling off everything's good it's still rising how how does this go up 121 yeah there we go so everything's fine except from the ethernet cable here I think yeah that's an Ethernet cable so I'm gonna attach the ethernet cable to this leg here and we'll be all good there we go that's sortedthis video is brought to you by honey bee free browser extension that saves you money when shopping online on sites like Razer eBay Amazon and
