The Evolution of Photo Editing: How iOS 13's Photos App Has Changed the Game
For years, iPhone users have been reliant on third-party photo editing apps to take their photos from good to great. With the release of iOS 13, Apple has taken note from these apps and enhanced their own Photos app, providing users with a more compelling and useful editing experience. This shift marks a significant change in the way we edit our photos, making it easier for amateur photographers and professionals alike to achieve professional-looking results.
Prior to iOS 13, the Photos app was able to do some basic editing tasks such as cropping or adjusting brightness and contrast. While these features were a good starting point, they often didn't quite get the job done. With iOS 13, Apple has significantly upgraded the editing experience, adding new features that allow for more precise control over our photos.
One of the most significant additions to the Photos app is its ability to adjust sharpness and apply noise reduction. These features may seem small, but they can make a dramatic difference in how our images turn out. For example, adjusting the sharpness can help bring out details in an image that were previously lost, while applying noise reduction can eliminate unwanted grain or texture from the photo. Additionally, Apple has introduced new adjustments such as warmth or tint, which allow users to fine-tune the overall aesthetic of their photos.
The crop menu has also been revamped with iOS 13, providing users with more advanced features and options. Previously, the crop menu offered only a few pre-selected aspect ratios, but now it includes an auto-crop feature that can accurately identify and crop subjects from images. This feature is particularly useful for landscapes or portraits, where the subject may be off-center or partially obscured by other elements in the frame. Furthermore, users can now adjust the skew of an image to fine-tune its perspective and make it more accurate.
Perhaps one of the most exciting features of iOS 13's Photos app is its ability to edit video. With previous versions of iOS, rotating a video was a tedious process that required exporting the video out to iMovie, applying the rotation, and then sending it back to the camera roll. This process was often frustrating and time-consuming, especially for those who wanted to quickly share their videos with others.
With iOS 13, Apple has eliminated this hassle by integrating photo editing features directly into the Photos app's video section. Users can now rotate, crop, deskew, or apply color or stylistic effects to their videos as easily as they do to their photos. This means that users can get that exact video look they were looking for without having to export and re-import the footage.
The improvements in iOS 13's Photos app have made it a more powerful tool for both photo and video editing. While it still may not offer every feature that third-party apps like Adobe Lightroom or Facetune provide, it has become a solid first-level editing suite for many users. For those who are new to photo editing or want to make minor tweaks to their photos, iOS 13's Photos app is an excellent place to start.
Ultimately, the updates in iOS 13's Photos app are a welcome change for anyone who takes multiple photos on their iPhone or big camera and wants to enhance them without needing advanced photo editing skills. If you're one of these users, now may be a great time to give the Photos app a try. With its new features and user-friendly interface, it's an excellent tool for making minor adjustments and creating professional-looking results.
