**A Successful System Recovery: A Cautionary Tale of Water Damage**
I'm going to swap his old battery in for a brand new one just to be on the safe side, going to give him some fresh thermal paste - good old thermal Grizzly - and back in goes his original platform so no motherboard or CPU swap needed. That's an interesting one also going to spend a bit more time cable managing since things looked uh a tad rough to start I'd say it looks a lot better than where we started, call it hubris call it whatever you want. I've got a good feeling this is going to turn on now I'm so confident that I've even got a monitor connected so when we do fire it up if it wants to load into windows we can confirm that here which is our end goal the last thing I want to mention before we dive into this is that yes we will be taking this outside to get a quick dusting because it is quite dirty even though it supposedly had water inside here we go that's a great sign already off to a good start much better than where we started just hoping now that we get some sign of life on screen it's resetting a few times I think because we've swapped hardware out reinstalled hardware it's probably training memory if I had to guess uh I do not have an HDMI cable plugged into that which would be a reason why we're not seeing anything on screen so I'm going to quickly connect that and uh and then I'm going to restart this whole process.
**The Importance of Proper Cable Management**
Funny thing I've mentioned this before but I want to reiterate it here oh it actually worked in this case so that is a post uh if you don't have your HDMI cable connected to your graphics card that's actually why it worked in this case and you power your system on and then you connect your display cable you probably won't get a signal because at that point the computer doesn't know where you're trying to get signal out and so it's going to default to something that you probably aren't intending to connect to uh so in that case just reset your system with the cable connected where it needs to be and then fire it back up. You should get a post, it looks like it's loading into Windows which is a good sign updating your system maybe water spilled on it while some sort of Windows update was running hopefully nothing is corrupted getting the most inconvenient times you get Windows updates could you just we'll be right back.
**A Fully Functional System**
Oh great there we go that time is totally not accurate but it works loads into Windows no problem temperatures are probably fine and we could go into the BIOS and triple check probably do that off camera quickly but it doesn't sound like at least from the fan curves that anything is getting extremely hot this graphics card works his original one definitely didn't and that's likely the component that died from the water damage I know at one point I was suspecting that the motherboard was at fault and I think it was just that one random instance where the system wasn't powering on even with the original card removed I think it's because I didn't fully disconnect power and drain capacitors for sure though his card was defective and well I'm happy to say that swapping that out has allowed us to finally load into windows again so we now have a fully working system minus some dust let's take care of that.
**A Final Clean-Up**
Got my trusty electric duster here we go my head's okay it's all right thanks for your concern. That was supposed to be a much cooler shot than it ended up being but uh we were able to clean up just a bit the CPU Cooler is still a bit stubborn there's a lot of dust cak underneath that I thought would be a bit easier to remove than it ended up being and it would require a full disassembly uh but temperature still look fine that's something we could address a bit later. The owner could if he so desired still boots in the windows no problem we've uh Power cycled a few times just to make sure that everything is okay I'm really glad that this one turned out the way it did with that thank you so much for watching this one that goes without saying your support is the reason why we can continue doing this uh the fact that you're able to click on these videos and watch them even if it's only a minute or two's worth just clicking is such a huge help and it allows us to continue doing what we're doing here for folks for free in and around the Orlando Florida area.
**Local Support**
Speaking of if you are a local and you have a broken system like a chance to get fixed for free on the channel be sure to hit me up via the link in the video description with that let me know what you think about this one in the comment section below guys one a thumbs up thought it was cool consider subscribing if you haven't already and uh again checking out those relevant links in the video description my name is Greg thanks for learning with me.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello there my PC has water damage there was very little water that got inside and I turned it off a few days later I attempted to start it when I try to start it it starts for a second and turns off I think there is still water residue on the motherboard and it needs a good clean I am sure a lot of people have this issue and it would make a nice video more importantly I would love to have it repaired as it is my working PC I really hope it can be repaired because it has been a great build I put together in 2020 I also play games on it so I enjoy some gaming on it too this here is that viers broken gaming PC and well well well another water damaged one now I did need a bit more context because I wasn't sure how he knew it was water damage did it not turn on at all maybe it turned on and didn't turn off maybe it blew screens and sure enough when he turns it on he says it's on for a split second the fan spin things light up and then it immediately shuts back off he also told me that he swapped the power supply in here after the water damage occurred in an attempt to recover the system and that did not nothing which that was the first thing I was going to do so at this point I am a bit worried that many components in here have died as a result of this water touching things that it shouldn't and I made it clear up front to the owner that I might not be able to just replace everything that's defective I can't just make a habit of rebuilding entire systems if something like water damage occurs every now and then I can make an exception or two but Hardware just doesn't grow on trees around here hopefully though at the very least we can pinpoint what is wrong wrong and relay that information to the owner so he knows what to replace and not just start blindly ordering things in a sort of panic effort to get it back up and running again that's what we're here for I make no guarantees but we're going to give it our best shot are you ready stay with me the new a115 air cooler from Corsair packs two af140 Elite fans into a dual Tower array with six beefy 6 mm heat pipes for powerful heat transfer pre-applied xtm 70 thermal paste and slim slide unlock fan mounts add to the ergonomics while 90 nickel-plated cooling fins and an overhauled retention system ensure excellent cooling efficiency the a15 supports the latest sockets for both Intel and AMD and trips with corsair's 5-year warranty for Peace of Mind learn more by clicking the link below it was off just FYI not sure how but it was I checked it ahead of time uh so we're just going to jump straight to power this thing on by the way welcome to fixer flop if you're new just know that everything you see us do in these videos is free of charge to the owners in question we charge z0 for all the services you see performed in these videos in exchange they allow us to make videos around their systems and that's how we make our money so uh your viewership is greatly appreciated and uh with that we're ready to power on wow that lasted for about 10 milliseconds I don't want to power it on more than I have to again with the context that we have have around this system we'll maybe try this one more time oh now we're not getting anything at all so it's possible we have to actually hard power down this system by turning off the unit draining capacitors I'll try it one more time here yeah so a little more lighting from the CPU and whatnot there but it shuts off almost immediately which is right in line with what the owner told us the very first thing I'm going to do is check for any visual signs of water intrusion maybe we see water spots along the top of this basement maybe on top of the graphics card he believes that water got on the motherboard I find that a bit difficult to believe because presumably water intruded from from a top from above so it's it's coming in from this top grill for the fan uh that's exhausting air and if the water came in there maybe it sosed around that's possible uh but the card is probably going to be the biggest target here because it's sitting horizontally there's a lot of surface area there for water to gather I'm just really hoping that this card is not totally bricked I know we told us he already swapped the power supply but we're going to do that here in the office just to be sure wow this is like d that cable was in there again I know he said he did this himself already but we can't make a habit of trusting anybody in this job we have to see things for ourselves just hands down we're going to connect our trusty night jar unit and see if anything changes I doubt it but still something we need to verify ourselves and we're only going to power primary components here so 8 Pin EPS the 24 pin and the graphics card the next step if this doesn't work is we're going to remove the graphics card because again I think uh that was right in the line of fire for the water that intruded yes this looks a bit Jank but it should get the point across let's see power strip is on it seems to happen overnight that's when the Gremlins come out uh yeah so we have no reaction at all from the rig as is tell you what we'll just uh we'll just remove the graphics card right here a few moments later this GTX 1660 is a bit dirty but I don't see any obvious signs of water damage uh nothing fried nothing cooked on the back plate here where the back plate normally would be the back of the PCB I should say uh all looks pretty normal and in case you're wondering with literally everything else disconnected except for the 24 pin and the 8 Pin EPS we are still not getting any power to this board any well constant power I should say so uh yeah we're looking at motherboard swap potentially CPU swap it just depends on what was struck first just hoping both things weren't fried at the same time o and we just noticed actually as we were moving this board this display port Port is being sort of kind of blocked by the rear IO plate here so there's this little like Notch that SS out supposed to rest on top of the port and it's actually shoved into the port which potentially could be shorting something I wonder if this is actually the reason why the motherboard is not playing nice right now maybe it has nothing to do with water at all at first glance everything on this board looks fine I don't see any signs of water damage at all Raymond gave it a once over as well we're we're in agreement that this actually looks normal and well that would be a good thing but it also makes our job a bit harder because now we're not entirely sure what is wrong I suppose while we're here we should go ahead and check on the CPU as well I believe it is a ryzen 5 26 wait the ryzen 7 2700x I I didn't recall that being the chip in here he said it was a 2600 it's not the end of the world not a huge deal on paper but I don't like discrepancies like this so I'm just gonna point it out to the owner and see if maybe he just didn't know maybe bought it from somebody else and thought it had a different CPU in there it it's just yeah always makes me feel a bit weird and while we're waiting for his response I do want to check on the socket other than the flaky thermal paste this looks to be okay nothing where it shouldn't be and same goes for the CPU all the pins look to be straight nothing bent or missing and know in case you're wondering clearing the seos does nothing although at this point I am kind of concerned about this battery if water got he here maybe it damaged the battery maybe it's just old we'll check voltage 2.8 volts it's might be worth a battery swap just to be on the safe side 12 seconds later now compare that to a brand new battery from a new motherboard just to show you the difference here you can see how this is a straight 3 volts I'm not sure how sensitive these boards are with the voltage but it is something to watch out for just to be on the safe side we'll test it with that replacement battery this is uh not going to be on for very long at all you see that a battery 02 volts that did it the Chip's getting hot too that's a good sign okay I'll admit like two seconds prior to us filming this clip I tried it again and it didn't power on and so I just wanted to actually get it on film to show that we tested it and then it turns on so I'm uh very shocked you saw right I showed you I was like I could hear like the same high-pitch squeal coming from somewhere in the VR mosfit area power delivery for the CPU but then it turned on the SEC I wonder if it'll do it again I just want to quickly check see if we can replicate it sure enough it's repeatable so did water damage the seamoss battery and that was the only issue that just seems so specific I mean this is way down here like when you compare it to I don't know the graphics card like the card I I in my opinion would take most of the water and this would just be shielded underneath but somehow some way that voltage was just a tad bit off and that was one of if not the only thing keeping the system from fully powering on but hold on a second before we get too far ahead of ourselves there are a few things we have to double check firstly we did call out the display port little cutout in the rear AR Shield as a potential issue because of where that little metal piece was jutting and we do need to rule that out one of the quick things we can do is is to put the original battery back into the board and try powering it on outside of the case because if that little piece in the display port cutout was in fact shorting the board well then it should boot up just fine with the other battery that just has a slightly lower voltage we'll probably still give him a new battery to be on the safe side but it's one way we can rule things out so out with the new and in with the old let's just give it another shot here uh oh yeah Power on on the power supply would would help oh would you look at that that's power so probably a display port problem definitely still Jank the way we have things I've got the card reinserted now just to rule this out wow really not powering on okay super sketch don't do this in real life even though I'm about to still still nothing disconnect power completely what is going on why is it not powering on now we did nothing different than just what CP is not getting hot so there's there's no real power being sent um look this is going to be a really Jank cut just because I want to show you guys as much as we can in these I want you to see what I'm doing because uh maybe that sheds a bit more light into what we're you know what we're dealing with problem wise now it power is on like the moment it detects anything in that uppermost slot there you go there's power um is it the is it the slot or is it the card okay well we'll put this graphics card in this slot then which I don't advise anyone do for obvious reasons but we're going to try it just to see if the card is in fact cooked we could also try inserting this card into a known working system see if we get the same problem there all right power back on nothing let's just power cycle very quickly and try this again nothing it hates it hates that graphics card wow okay and to pull this out right so let's get a different graphics card in here and see how things go I imagine it's going to work I think this thing is bricked which wouldn't surprise me again just based on where it's located in this rig with respect to the water damage now you're not going to believe this I have almost an exact match Graphics this is actually a 1660 super whereas his is just a vanilla 1660 but ours is well you know clean as well so there's that and ours definitely works so ours is in I'm going to power on the unit and we're going to jump the power pins here oh look at that boots up right away which uh which is which is which is great wow this is this is an awesome scratcher this is really nice I should probably turn this off I CPU be cooking wait a minute didn't we at one point power the system on without the original Graphics cir in the rig like in the case and it still didn't work that was why we took it out in the first place and why I went down the now in hindsight pointless battery Rabbit Hole yeah something's not something's not adding up here uh and honestly it's self-inflicted if I'm being honest it's because I didn't do things in in proper isolated settings like I should have exclusively tested the board with and without the graphics card outside of the case before diving into the battery issue at all but now that I know our card works with his board and I know that his card doesn't work with our board outside of the case I'm curious if our graphics card with his original board will work in the old case maybe the display little metal piece was actually a second issue that we bypassed when we removed it this is the problem when you have multiple things wrong with the system it could send you in so many different directions that you just get lost I'm not sure why this system continues to make appearances in videos out of its intended use but we're going to swap out the known working gtx970 in here with his original graphics card and we know this works otherwise so if we don't get power then we can say with near certainty that the card is defective I'm not sure which way this is headed part of me wants to think that it's going to work but I've been uh I've been very wrong before here we we go if I can find the power button yeah so I think that's I think that's pretty definitive system is just not powering on with this card connected so now that we've finally figured that out I'm going to swap his old battery in for a brand new one just to be on the safe side going to give him some fresh thermal paste good old thermal Grizzly and back in goes his original platform so no motherboard or CPU isolated settings like I should have exclusively tested the board with and without the graphics card outside of the case before diving into the battery issue at all but now that I know our card works with his board and I know that his card doesn't work with our board outside of the case I'm curious if our graphics card with his original board will work in the old case maybe the display little metal piece was actually a second issue that we bypassed when we removed it this is the problem when you have multiple things wrong with the system it could send you in so many different directions that you just get lost I'm not sure why this system continues to make appearances in videos out of its intended use but we're going to swap out the known working gtx970 in here with his original graphics card and we know this works otherwise so if we don't get power then we can say with near certainty that the card is defective I'm not sure which way this is headed part of me wants to think that it's going to work but I've been uh I've been very wrong before here we we go if I can find the power button yeah so I think that's I think that's pretty definitive system is just not powering on with this card connected so now that we've finally figured that out I'm going to swap his old battery in for a brand new one just to be on the safe side going to give him some fresh thermal paste good old thermal Grizzly and back in goes his original platform so no motherboard or CPU swap needed that's an interesting one also going to spend a bit more time cable managing since things looked uh a tad rough to start I'd say it looks a lot better than where we started call it hubris call it whatever you want I've got a good feeling this is going to turn on now I'm so confident that I've even got a monitor connected so when we do fire it up if it wants to load into windows we can confirm that here which is our end goal the last thing I want to mention before we dive into this is that yes we will be taking this outside to get a quick dusting because it is quite dirty even though it supposedly had water inside here we go that's a great sign already off to a good start much better than where we started just hoping now that we get some sign of Life on screen it's resetting a few times I think because we've swapped Hardware out reinstalled Hardware it's probably training memory if I had to guess uh I do not have an HDMI cable plugged into that which would be a reason why we're not seeing anything on screen so I'm going to quickly connect that and uh and then I'm going to restart this whole process so now funny thing I've mentioned this before but I want to reiterate it here oh it actually worked in this case so that is a post uh if you don't have your HDMI cable connected to your graphics card that's actually why it worked in this case and you power your system on and then you connect your display cable you probably won't get a signal because at that point the the computer doesn't know where you're trying to get signal out and so it's going to default to something that you probably aren't intending to connect to uh so in that case just reset your system with the cable connected where it needs to be and then fire it back up you should get a post it looks like it's loading into Windows which is a good sign updating your system maybe water spilled on it while some sort of Windows update was running hopefully nothing is corrupted getting the most inconvenient times you get Windows updates could you just we'll be right back oh great there we go that time is totally not accurate but it works loads into Windows no problem temperatures are probably fine and we could go into the BIOS and triple check probably do that off camera quickly but it doesn't sound like at least from the fan curves that anything is getting extremely hot this graphics card works his original one definitely didn't and that's likely the component that died from the water damage I know at one point I was suspecting that the motherboard was at fault and I think it was just that one random instance where the system wasn't powering on even with the original card removed I think it's because I didn't fully disconnect power and drain capacitors for sure though his card was defective and well I'm happy to say that swapping that out has allowed us to finally load into windows again so we now have a fully working system minus some dust let's take care of that got my trusty electric duster here we go my head's okay it's all right thanks for your concern That was supposed to be a much cooler shot than it ended up being but uh we were able to clean up just a bit the CPU Cooler is still a bit stubborn there's a lot of dust cak underneath that I thought would be a bit easier to remove than it ended up being and it would require a full disassembly uh but temperature still look fine that's something we could address a bit later the owner could if he so desired still boots in the windows no problem we've uh Power cycled a few times just to make sure that everything is a okay I'm really glad that this one turned out the way it did with that thank you so much for watching this one that goes without saying your support is the reason why we can continue doing this uh the fact that you're able to click on these videos and watch them even if it's only a minute or two's worth just clicking is such a huge help and it allows us to continue doing what we're doing here for folks for free in and around the Orlando Florida area speaking of if you are a local and you have a broken system you like a chance to fixed for free on the channel be sure to hit me up via the link in the video description with that let me know what you think about this one in the
