2022 Kia EV6 _ The Future of Normal Cars

**The Kia EV6: A Great Driving Car with Some Compromises**

When it comes to electric vehicles (EVs), Kia has been making waves with its new lineup, starting with the Kia EV6. As we put this car through our testing regimen, we were impressed by its impressive performance, comfortable ride quality, and engaging driving experience. However, as is often the case with modern EVs, there are some compromises to be made in order to achieve these characteristics.

One of the most noticeable aspects of the EV6 is its interior design, which features piano black accents throughout. While this may not be to everyone's taste, we believe that the ionic 5 does a better job in terms of aesthetics. The EV6's front fascia, however, is more traditional and less polarizing than its counterpart.

**Performance: A Great Start**

When it comes to performance, the Kia EV6 delivers impressively. Its electric motors provide plenty of torque and acceleration, making it feel quick and responsive on the road. The car also handles well, thanks in part to its sport-tuned suspension and precise steering. However, when we turned off traction stability control, the car's behavior became more erratic and less engaging.

**The Problem with Traction Stability Control**

We've talked about this issue before with other Kia models, but it bears repeating: Hyundai/Kia's approach to traction stability control is often too "on" or "off." The system prioritizes forward momentum over nuanced handling and can be overly intrusive at times. In the EV6, this means that when traction stability control is engaged, the car becomes less responsive and more predictable, but also less engaging and less fun to drive.

**Comparison to the Hyundai Ioniq 5**

One of the most interesting aspects of the EV6 is its relationship to the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Both cars share a common platform and are designed to compete in the same market segments, but they have distinct personalities and approaches to performance. While the Ioniq 5 is more aggressive and polarizing in its design, we believe that the EV6 is a more refined and mature take on the formula.

**Ride Quality: A Key Advantage**

Despite some of its other compromises, the Kia EV6's ride quality is one of its standout features. The car is incredibly comfortable, thanks to its suspension tuning and soundproofing measures. Whether you're cruising down the highway or taking a spirited drive through the mountains, the EV6 provides a smooth and composed ride that is hard to match.

**Final Thoughts**

Overall, we believe that the Kia EV6 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a great driving car with a strong electric powertrain. While it may not be perfect – and some of its design choices are questionable at best – the EV6 is a compelling option in a crowded market. With its impressive performance, comfortable ride quality, and engaging driving experience, we hope that Kia can meet the promise to make this car available in all 50 states.

As we head into the final thoughts section, it's worth noting that the EV6's battery capacity and charging network are still developing areas for improvement. However, with its current design and approach, we believe that this car has a bright future ahead of it. We hope to see more Kia models like the EV6 on the road soon, and we're excited to see where the company will go from here.

**Production Numbers: A Key Challenge**

As Kia looks to scale up production of the EV6, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. The company's ability to meet demand without sacrificing quality or increasing prices is crucial, as is ensuring that the car becomes available in all 50 states. If Kia can get these numbers under control, we believe that this car will become a real contender in its class.

In conclusion, the Kia EV6 is an impressive electric vehicle with many great qualities. While it may not be perfect – and some of its design choices are questionable at best – we believe that it's a compelling option for anyone looking for a great driving car with a strong electric powertrain. With its impressive performance, comfortable ride quality, and engaging driving experience, we hope to see more Kia models like the EV6 on the road soon.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthe kia ev6 gt line this is kia's electric suv which happens to have a mechanical twin already on the market which is hyundai's ionic 5. and because we've already done a video on that car we're going to be focusing on the technical differences between both vehicles how this thing drives compared to the ionic 5 and how it does against some of its competitors like the id4 mustang maki and the tesla vehicles already on the market so what's this interior space like compared to the ionic 5 well if you look at the exterior dimensions this is technically a longer vehicle but the ionic has a longer wheelbase and is a taller vehicle and because of that the ionic and its boxier shape has far more interior cargo capacity and passenger capacity the rear space for the ionic 5 is much much larger however what you get back in the ev6 is more front occupant legroom and hip room despite losing a little bit of headroom and where you lose that headroom is due to the styling of the exterior of both of these vehicles the ioniq 5 kind of looks like an 80s retro hatchback which is something i really really like but i get is not for everyone the ev6 more has this future forward look and they've also carried that exterior design to how both cars have styled their interiors so when you look at the dash design and some of the overall cabin design of the ev6 much like the exterior of the vehicle they've gone for a more futuristic car-like approach or the ionic 5 because it's styled again like that 80s hatchback is a far more airy cabin with a more open front occupant area the ionic almost has a bench-like front seat or this is a far more traditional front seat because you have this much much larger center console area with your rotary shifter on the ev6 again the interior electronics are basically identical yes the kia gets slightly reskinned and the heads-up display looks a little bit different but the core technology is the same the big difference is how you interact with stuff primarily the hvac and the infotainment controls in the hyundai you get a far more traditional set of hvac and infotainment controls yes there are still touch controls but it's not like in the kia what the kia does is it has a switchable menu so you maintain the same two core rotary dials on the left and the right however based upon what mode you're in those rotary dials either control hvac or infotainment controls it's kind of a neat gimmick but it is a gimmick it's not the most intuitive thing in the world and i can imagine when you're trying to use this in the cold it's going to be a massive pain in the ass to be honest and yes you do have to physically tap on the screen to figure out what mode you're going to be in past that though from an interior space most of this stuff is going to be all the same mark thinks the meridian audio system in this car sounds a little different than it did in the ionic but i'll leave it up to the graphs to determine but with that said i think it's time for us to head into the shop and walk you through this car technically the kia ev6 gt line mark this must be deja vu for you because you were just underneath this car's mechanical twin yeah that's right the ionic five and the interesting part about these cars especially driving them back to back how similar they are and how different they are and my big question is this is a very weird place to be in the automotive industry because because we've seen other brands do this in past like plymouth and dodge having mirrored cars between like the whatever the dodge neon and the plymouth neon why this brand is spending so much money on the same car to have to water down supply chain like you know why not just have one ev where they have enough batteries to supply customers to have this available i don't get it different strokes for different folks because apparently hyundai and kia claim that their design language and the finer details of tuning make for two widely or vastly different driving experiences and when we talked to the reps we talked to our hyundai rep and our kia rep i'm like oh what's different between these two cars they had no idea so our hyundai rep had to ask korea and instead of getting real technical answers she got dimensional changes and they claim and everyone claims that there are suspension tuning differences between both of these cars and while they are i can't tell you specifically what they did all all the time historically compared to the hyundai counterparts it's always more stiff it's always a little bit firmer ride to give you a little bit more handling feel like uh confidence feeling driving experience where the hyundai equivalents are a little bit more soft or either like luxury or futuristic uh mindset where this is trying to be a bit more traditional than the ionic five and those are the fundamental changes now all the technical things jack let's talk about it so this car as i mentioned in the interior segment is technically longer than the ionic but it has a shorter wheelbase it is also slightly more efficient when it comes to the coefficient of drag and the weights are very slightly different but because of the coefficient of drag difference according to hyundai and kia that's why the kia gets like 20 or 30 more miles of range the battery tech is identical they both have essentially the same all-wheel drive motors you can either have this rear or all and i'll show this chart or we'll break down this graph and show you all the different battery packs and ranges and instead of me trying to regurgitate that and it's built on the same architecture egimp and that's that the whole concept is basically what all the other manufacturers are doing the whole center lower center plane of the car right here is loaded full of batteries and they can do up to four rows of varying densities based on the market and based on the cost obviously emerging markets are getting less battery capacity and rear-wheel drive where it's just cheaper to manufacture so the price comes down in america we get the two options as you said all wheel or rear wheel when you get the all-wheel drive or the dual motor version you lose battery capacity or you lose range overall you have the highest capacity but you lose the overall range i think it drops it down like 250 something miles or 260 months and then if you go just rear wheel drive only it goes up to about 3 10 320. i think there's like a five mile range or seven mile range difference between the ev6 and the ionic and really in real world honestly depending on where you live again this whole thing with evs if you're an extreme cold it's gonna affect the range if you're an extreme hot it's gonna affect the rain it's not even that extreme so this morning when i parked it yesterday night this had like 107 miles of range and it was in the about 45-50 degrees this morning at 39 degrees it was 80 something it literally dropped like 20. so this is the thing with ev cars your your performance they wow you with the numbers like oh my god these things are going to make a thousand horsepower but all of it is electronically controlled so that battery gets too hot the electronics look at the battery temperature the thermal state of the car it's going to start dialing back the power that the batteries are able to produce or send to the electric motor so it's always changing and based on conditions that's going to be changing the the bottom line is is this really getting the range that they're advertising and you can't really say yes or no because like as you said you wake up in the freezing cold you're going to lose battery capacity just basically if it's 100 degrees out and you live in arizona yeah so i think really at this point jack since it's it's so similar to the ionic 5 that i did watch that video for all the rest of the technical details but the main reason why this is going to be better than its internal combustion counterparts is everything is mounted way lower your electric motors are at the bottom part of the car your electric or the battery pack is at the lowest part of the frame so your center of gravity is you can't do this with a internal combustion style cars so dynamically the engineers have so much more flexibility in terms of design and even though this is kind of gen 1 you know by gen 5 these things are going to be insane monsters and if you look at what this car probably would have had which would have been a rattly ass four-cylinder directly compared to that this is a far smoother far more efficient and powerful drivetrain than knife like an equivalent 2.5 liter turbocharged hyundai or kia and you don't even need to look any further than like the kia soul versus the kia soul eevee the last gen one and just that wasn't even dedicated eevee platform and you the difference in driving dynamics and smoothness and refinement with the ev over the internal combustion counterpart it was amazing and this is just i have so much respect for this as a mainstream card that you're going to use every day i i'm really i just say it's affordable but it's far more affordable than something like the ticons that we're doing very shortly right right this once this comes down to real prices uh i people are going to be running out the door to buy this type of stuff let's take this on the road jack all right jack welcome to illinois we don't have chargers and we get shitty weather it doesn't matter what time of year but don't worry i have the maximum volume on for the synthetic engine noise i'm in sport traction stability are off and it's snowing let's hear it oh put me in cyber oh it sounds like a clown whistle i need stylish oh that's better now we're gonna go to cyber now we're gonna go to dynamic yeah man that's dynamic sounding obviously with evs you can't you know if we turn this off as we should let me turn that all the way down because it's so annoying i want to plug in my own of the diesel cummings i wanna i want the lfa oh yeah you want the lfa fake engine evcuv so when you have all this crab off all the sound it's just as we talked about in the shop this is transformative compared to other like the economy cars of the past the refinement of ev vehicles particularly good ones like this and the ioniq and like the tycon are transformative it is really really amazing how much nvh and just general harshness that these ev vehicles have managed to pull out particularly if you're coming from a regular car oh my god yeah i mean the you know i said this i believe in the ionic is when you drive that and you drive some like basic uh basic like economy car compared to like a forte or rav4 or something you're like okay i get those i get the sales pitch i get why the hype is there but it has to be done good the ioniq five compared to this is so similar like literally from a driving perspective it's so similar it's like why bother having both but there are some changes in typical kia fashion the suspension tuning is more stiff it's definitely stiffer i mean to me that's about the only thing that i can tell the turn-in is a little bit sharper because i'm sure they upped the spring rates in the front so if you want the softer experience i would go right for the ionic 5 if you can find it i actually just think the ioniq is a better packaged vehicle if you're going to get a box you might as well fully maximize your cargo carrying capacity and that's what the ioniq does better more headroom more rear cargo space more passenger space and this yeah man i i agree with you i think there's there's some elements to this that just kind of drive me crazy with uh and i know you talked about this on the interior space but these stupid like bag hooks on the driver's side that i've caught my hand on and cut me they have this huge floating armrest thing that takes up a ton of usable space it reduces the openness of the cabin i know they were trying to make it more sporty and traditional feeling but then they had all the piano black crap on the interior it just for what this car was trying to be i think the ionic does a better job the only problem with the ionic five is people certain people hate the way that thing looks and they're even harder to get yeah exactly so what else is there to talk about jack i mean performance if you're comparing this to a more traditional let's even hatchback this car is great i mean it handles well for what it is it's very very fast it's extraordinarily quiet it's comfortable i mean yes it's not a super dynamic car and this is still hit with the same problems the ioniq is when you turn back on the traction stability control which honestly you're going to be you're going to have on 99.9 percent of the time it's hyper invasive it doesn't quite know what to do when it's sloppy out like it is now and with all the torque the electric motors yeah and now that you're in the world with two electric motors where it's all electronically controlled and people kind of got that out of shape when i was talking about the the last kia product that that we drove with the stinger rear wheel drive i i basically had a meltdown about the fact that they they can't seem to get like the dynamics right of traction stability control and how everything is just it's like an on and off switch with the way that they program stuff and here because you have a front and rear motor i feel like it's not as bad as their internal combustion cars but it's something that they absolutely have to do work on it it's it's geared for like npc driving like it's it's lowering the driving dynamics for the lowest common denominator to the point where it neuters some of the the good prop the good elements of the engineering they put into weight balance and all that with this car but i mean honestly the people that are buying this aren't going to care too much about that that really good top-end driving experience i think all you have to do is drive a modern mazda dave coleman and we had this conversation with dave coleman yeah even with the modern mazdas if everything's on they will still allow you to have wheel slip their traction and stability control and the way they program it is prioritizing forward momentum yes it's making sure the car can still go forward not an anvil being dropped off the back of the vehicle like the key on hyundai cars so it's a polar opposite it's a mentality and i don't know if it's like an engineering thing or if it's an internal like focus of like we have to make these cars overly safe for people versus mazda's like we want to still engage people in a driving experience while still making it safe these guys just take it to the opposite extreme but anyway that's a huge diatribe about this car it's essentially the same as the ionic 5 coming back to it it is an amazing driving car overall this is a huge step in the right direction i personally if i had to have one of these i would buy the ionic 5 over it just because of the ride quality so if you can't get one and you blindfold the average person they're probably not able to tell the difference when you're behind the wheel yeah absolutely jack so mark let's head into the final thoughts sir all right let's do it final thoughts on the kia ev6 i think you kind of know our feelings already combined with the ionic 5. this is built on hyundai's new global architecture for battery cars or electric cars and it is an amazing first full effort one that i hope they can keep up with production on and that will be available in all 50 states as as kia claims now the battery capacity is good for most people the charging network is going to be dependent on what area you're in but the the takeaway is this is an amazing driving car it's a bit stiffer than the ioniq 5. it is a little bit more traditional looking on the outside and some of the inside features but again there's a compromise here the way that they've made alterations of this car just it doesn't make it any better than the ionic five it actually hurts it in some ways there's material choices that are questionable on the inside but at the end of the day i really really hope that hyundai and kia can get the production numbers up with this so they can meet the promise that it's a 50 state car because that's at this point the price point the dealer gouging and the availability is what's going to kill this if they can't if they can't meet the numbers and the demand that people have for it great car hope hope to see more of them on the road soon thanks for watching see you next videothe kia ev6 gt line this is kia's electric suv which happens to have a mechanical twin already on the the charging network is going to be dependent on what area you're in but the the takeaway is this is an amazing driving car it's a bit stiffer than the ioniq 5. it is a little bit more traditional looking on the outside and some of the inside features but again there's a compromise here the way that they've made alterations of this car just it doesn't make it any better than the ionic five it actually hurts it in some ways there's material choices that are questionable on the inside but at the end of the day i really really hope that hyundai and kia can get the production numbers up with this so they can meet the promise that it's a 50 state car because that's at this point the price point the dealer gouging and the availability is what's going to kill this if they can't if they can't meet the numbers and the demand that people have for it great car hope hope to see more of them on the road soon thanks for watching see you next video\n"
