I'm Tina and I'm Kyle today we're going to be totally testing the 2013 Toyota Tundra. The tundra is a truck that impressed us all when it towed the Space Shuttle Endeavor across the 405 freeway in LA to its new home at the California Science Center. You may not have a space shuttle to tow but we're guessing the tundra will tow just about anything you can throw at it.
The latest generation of Tundras were revamped in 2007 and quickly became one of the market leaders. In fact, they won JD Power Awards most dependable large truck seven years in a row. In our test today, we're gonna be taking the tundra out with a heavy-duty trailer and a bobcat weighing about eighty one hundred pounds.
There's a few factors to consider when buying a truck for killing you've got to consider gross vehicle weight tongue weight axle weight rating no real tonne capacity. You know it's one thing to actually be able to tow ten thousand four hundred pounds which this can but it's another thing to bring it to stop once you get in that kind of weight moving. You've got a really good brakes to get that thing stopped quickly.
Toyota has massive four piston brake calipers to do the job and the largest front rotors in its class. We're going to go ahead and put the brakes to the test even at over 80 percent of the overall towing capacity of the truck today we're still able to stop this truck pretty efficient. Toyota has over engineered the motor transmission and drivetrain to make this one really strong truck.
Listen, this is the floor it does sound awesome doesn't it. The truck we're driving today has a 5.7 liter engine offering 381 horsepower and 401 foot-pounds of torque. Tundra offers other choice of engines including a strong 4.6 liter v8 and a capable 4 liter v6 in the regular and double cab models.
Even with the trailer on the back, this engine still has plenty of power. The i-4 engine offers dual independent variable valve timing which will aid in giving you power in all types of conditions while remaining as fuel efficient as possible. The tundra doesn't have a heavy duty version like Chevy Ram or Ford that means whatever Tundra you get is a heavy duty truck however it is a little firm almost too much truck for the average family to stop in.
The Tundra's big truck personality there's Platinum Edition available on the Crewmax tundra it packs it 200 with high-end features like heated and cooled leather seats navigation power sliding rear window and 20-inch wheels. Plenty of room for six adults and forty four and a half inches of rear legroom in addition to the large cab.
There's plenty of storage for things like tools gadgets file hangers even a dog to keep you safe to and from the job. Toyota's earned the highest safety rating due to some newly added features trailer sway control four-wheel drive active traction control automatic slip differential and their class-leading brakes.
Even though this truck may be a workhorse, Toyota does offer some high-tech features bluetooth to make phone calls and stream audio. Toyota's Entune system giving you applications right in your dashboard navigation and optional backup camera. So without that backup camera it might have taken some people all day to get that trailer hooked up.
We found the radio is a bit of a stretch from the driver's seat thankfully those controls are also available through steering wheel-mounted buckers. The tundra comes in lots of different configurations short standard or long bed regular double or crew cab models options like 20-inch wheels chrome accents TRD off-road and sport package with some of the available exterior features that Toyota offers.
