2016 vs 2017 13” MacBook Pro - Is it worth upgrading

outlet releases redesigned MacBook Pros in late 2016 and about eight months later we already have a refresh that's because they were released with skylake processors right about the time that Intel was releasing KB leaked this processor update is the only significant change in the updated MacBook Pro so we put it to the test to see how much of a difference it actually makes we'll be comparing the base model 2016 MacBook Pro that retailed for $14.99 to the new base model that comes in at a $12.99 starting price design-wise these two machines are nearly identical other than the control and option keys having updated icons we have the same all-metal hinge that was a big upgrade from the previous plastic the fantastic speakers that wrapped most of their laptops on the market and of course the second-generation love it or hated butterfly keys

the display is the same gorgeous DCI p3 rated IPS panel with 500 nits of brightness though our 2017 models seem to be just slightly brighter spec-wise these machines are quite similar ram has been sped up slightly and our newer cabling processor features not only an efficiency upgrade but also a clock speed increase to hit the lower base price

the ssd was shrunk to 128 gigabytes and unless you practically live in the cloud that's not enough for most users on top of that is the performance decrease with write speed being nearly cut in half this is the case with most smaller capacity as these and not only this macbook let's just say that we highly recommend stepping up to at least 256 gigabyte loading at performance

we started off with a geek bench for here the new MacBook is 21% faster and single core tasks and 30% faster and multi-core even more interesting is that the $1300 13 inch MacBook Pro CPU is 11 percent and 60 percent faster than the best processor available in the 2016 variant which required spending at least $2100

the geek bench for graphics tests found a modest improvement of 5 percent and mix OpenCL tasks but if you're a video editor the upgraded iris plus graphics show a much bigger difference in the popular final caboose X benchmark we see 38% faster rendering performance this translates to our own five-minute 4k color grader project with a 30% faster render and encode speed

Cinebench r15 a d rendering benchmark showed 25 percent CPU and 15 percent jeep you performance increases unfortunately if you're into gaming on your Mac the iris plus 640 showed only an 8 percent improvement in our gaming test Unigine heaven with the respectable performance gains

we're glad that the battery life and heat remained the same throughout all of our tests both machines operated the exact same temperatures with the newer Mac displaying slightly faster but inaudible fan speed increases to combat the faster processor both laptops are rated at 10 hours of battery life by Apple which we've had no problem reaching while doing simple tasks was our 2016 MacBook Pro

we streamed the highest quality video YouTube allow the safari and after one and a half hours both machines were at 85 percent battery life this isn't a very tough test so we performed a 30-minute 4k video editing session with each machine and both finished with about 80 percent battery life

if you drive 2016 13 inch MacBook Pro and don't push your machine to the limit there's really no need to jump ship there are however a small group of users who need the portability as a 13 inch MacBook Pro over the 15-inch but also require more power for productivity if that's you

the impressive performance increase of KB Lake may be enticing enough to upgrade if you're upgrading from older machine and trying to decide between a discounted or refurbished 2016 MacBook or a new 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro we would suggest the newer model just make sure to upgrade to at least 256 gigabyte loading for more news reviews and how-to's check out insider com and subscribe to Apple Insider on YouTube
