I just finished reading "The Family Upstairs" by Lisa Jewell and I have to say, it was a disappointing read for me. The main reason I didn't enjoy this book is because of the characters. They were all really awful, in my opinion, and I found myself hating them from the very beginning. Each character had their own set of problems, but none of them seemed likable or relatable to me. There was this one girl who was kind of the center of attention, but even she wasn't that great. And then there were these other girls who just talked bad about each other and were all jerks. I think Lisa Jewell intended for us to hate all of these characters because they're just so flawed and unlikeable. But honestly, it made me dislike the book a lot.
I also didn't like the way the author wrote this book. The pacing was really slow and I found myself getting bored at times. And while I do like Lisa Jewell's writing style in general, this book felt flat to me. I know some people might disagree with me on this, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe that's because I'm a bit of a harsh critic when it comes to books, but that's just honestly how I felt.
One thing that did bother me was the ending. The whole mystery surrounding who died and who killed them was not as surprising or shocking as I thought it would be. In fact, it wasn't even that surprising. I don't want to give too much away, but let's just say that I didn't feel like the big reveal was very well done. It felt a bit rushed and convenient at times.
Another thing that bothered me about this book is the way some of the characters made false accusations against each other. The main character, Lenora, was also guilty of making false assumptions about her best friend Claire, which just didn't sit well with me. I think it's great when authors can create complex and nuanced characters, but in this case, I felt like the author missed the mark.
The book is told in a dual narrative format, with Lenora waking up in the hospital trying to piece together what happened on that fateful night. At times, she'll talk about things from her past, including her relationship with Claire, which adds another layer to the story. However, I didn't find this structure very effective. Sometimes it felt like we were getting glimpses of the past without really understanding what was going on. Other times, it felt like we were jumping back and forth between different plot threads without much coherence.
Overall, I just didn't love "The Family Upstairs". My main problem was the awful characters in it, which made me dislike the book a lot. The ending also didn't do it for me. It's not a scary book by any means - it's more of a drama with added mystery elements. But if you're looking for a suspenseful read that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this might not be the book for you. Sorry to disappoint anyone who was excited about reading this book, but I thought I'd share my honest opinion.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello everyone today I'm here to do a very quick book review and in the book I will be talking about today is in a dark dark wood by Ruth we're read this for my spooky October TBR which you can see the video right there this is a adults like a mystery type of book I would say not definitely not a psychological so little bit more of a mystery I have read one other book by Ruth where and that is the woman in Cabin 10 and I really I didn't enjoy that one I did a video review so if you want to see that I'll be right there this one is all about a hen which is no no a hen is which I've been until I really read this book it is a bachelorette party in England so they call you know and here in America we call it bachelorette parties or bachelor parties in England I caught a hen party in a stag party which i think is way cooler honestly I think I'm just gonna start calling them no unch because i like that so basically this is all about a hen party where they are out in them they go out into this cabin in the woods and murder takes place there and so throughout the whole book - pretty much trying to figure out what happened at the same party what exactly who died and who did it and that's all just at this book's main character we follow same Lenora also called so cut nora also called be to some other which was confused and was like stick to one name and that'll be it and she is a writer and she gets invited to this head party that her best friend from high school is getting married only she has only talked to her in like ten years it's been that long so she's kind of like why is she fighting this Empire be having talk to ten years we kind of had a rough thing but she decides to go anyway with one of her other friends and crazy things happen so that's pretty much all you need to know about this book is that there is a head party and that there is a murder and you're pretty much trying to figure out who died and how they did it and who did it let clue pretty much you know you don't know he wasn't in his peacock in the study with a candlestick I don't know I don't know no it was not probably not I'm never good at clue overall I like this book I didn't love it there was a lot of problems I had with it then flies in this I will say Ruth where it has a very good way of writing where I have to finish it Amelie because it does I can capture me and I'm like who did it like i des the whole saying who did it like how they did it what was their motive why did they do it you know what with the reasons and all that kind of stuff so I everyone you don't know who died number two you don't know who killed them so two questions you wait like I said I I just how do I feel it was look I just didn't really enjoy it the main thing that I did not like were the characters in this book I disliked every single character in this book I do not see that lightly because I have never read a book where I have looked just like everybody in the whole book like this book was just chock full of really awful flawed character so if that's your thing this will be the book for you and this book only had about seven characters in it and I just really do not like any of and you know I think maybe I'm the only one that feels that way maybe not I don't know you let me know if you've read it but I just feel like even the main character she the main character I didn't like her but I didn't love her so she was just kind of the one that kind it was like I'm okay that's reading about you but the other characters I really did not like they what kind of jerks they were doesn't mean to each other the way they would just be passive-aggressive when they talk to one other like they would undermine me with one girl that was really just an insane we had another girl that was just kind of the center of attention I just really did not like any one of these characters I think because of that I really didn't enjoy this book as much as I wanted to because each of the characters were just horrible in my opinion I think that's why she intended to write these characters for you just to hate all of them because I don't know I don't know why but I just didn't like any of them but like I said you're looking for a book with really awful flawed characters who just liked it the little other people and just talk bad about each other and just be jerks this might be the book first I maybe I feel like I'm harsh saying that but that's just honestly how I felt were reading this I didn't like anybody in this book but if you read it let me know what's that was just me also the other thing I didn't like about it was the ending the whole figuring out of the whole big question mark of who died and who killed them I didn't feel like it was I don't know I didn't like it I felt like I wanted more it wasn't a big shock for me it wasn't like a huge gasp you know when you read a book and you have a huge shock and you're like oh my gosh I but I just thought I would share with you guys what I thought about this book because in the end I liked it okay I didn't love it I ended up giving it maybe 2.75 to three stars I did read it fast I didn't enjoy the pacing and the writing was well I do like Ruth where is writing but I just felt like this felt flat for me like I didn't like the characters I didn't like the big reveal at the end I just yeah and just even like when you get to the big reveal you find out more things that happened in the past with this book again that's another thing we have Leonora who was going to Clare her former best friends and high school party her and Clare had this huge falling-out and you are trying to figure out what exactly happened why do they have this huge falling-out and when you figure out why it's just like I understand but I don't understand why really like I I didn't really like piece together for me I felt like the main character kind of made some false of her own as well as her best friend and I just didn't love that as well so book is also told like you're seeing Lenore wake up in the hospital trying to piece together what happened that night because she can't remember and so you're getting glimpses of that sometimes and she's trying to remember and also getting glimpses of jority of the story takes place at the end weekend when you're fine uncovering things and seeing things as they unfold really so you're getting like dual narratives and sometimes she'll talk about things from her past about her in the main carrot but her in her best friend Claire so oh yeah overall I just liked it I didn't love it my main problem was the really awful characters in it I really just really made me dislike it a lot just because of the way they were and honestly another thing I didn't like was the ending how it all came together the big reveal I didn't really feel like it was just a great one and it have enough for me so I didn't love it it's definitely not a scary
