**The Hidden Secrets Behind Everyday Objects**
As we go about our daily lives, it's easy to overlook the small details that make up the world around us. But sometimes, these everyday objects hold secrets and surprises that can amaze and delight. In this article, we'll delve into four fascinating examples of how seemingly ordinary items have been designed with clever features and purposes.
**Headrests: The Unsung Heroes of Car Safety**
When it comes to car safety, many of us take our seats for granted. But did you know that the headrests in most cars are removable? That's right – these metal spikes at the back of your headrest can be used as a makeshift tool in an emergency. If you find yourself in a bad car accident and need to break open a window, you can pull out the headrest and use its metal rods to smash through the glass. This ingenious design feature can literally save your life, so next time you're driving, take a closer look at that headrest – it might just be your best friend.
**The Secret Margins of Paper**
Have you ever wondered why paper has those extra little margins around the outside? It's not for protecting your work from drafts or dust – although that's often cited as a reason. The real purpose of these margins is to keep out unwanted critters, like rats and mice, which were once common household pests. These pesky rodents loved to snack on paper, so the addition of the extra margin was a clever solution to protect your actual writing from being nibbled away.
**Drink Containers: Designing for Functionality**
Next up are some surprising facts about everyday drink containers. Juice boxes, in particular, have those little tabs on the side that can be pulled out and used as a grip for kids to hold onto while drinking. This clever design feature is not only convenient but also makes it easier for children to secure their juice box without spilling a drop. Similarly, beer bottles and soda bottles with long necks may seem inconvenient to drink from, but there's actually a reason for this design – the spout is intended to be held by the user to prevent warming up the contents.
**Solo Cups: Measurement Made Easy**
Ah, Solo cups – the staple of every college party. But did you know that these cups have measurement lines printed on them? These little markings are not just for show; they provide useful information about the volume of liquid each cup can hold. The first line indicates one ounce, while the second line shows five ounces (the traditional pour for a glass of wine). Even the third line, which reads 12 ounces, reveals the standard amount for a beer. Who knew Solo Cups were so cleverly designed?
**Soda Cans: Opening and Staying Fresh**
Last but not least are soda cans – those pesky little objects that can be tricky to open. But have you ever noticed the little pop tab on top of a soda can? This tiny hole is actually designed to hold your straw in place, preventing it from moving around and bouncing out of the can as you drink. And what's even more clever is the large reusable straw provided with each can – this oversized straw is specifically designed to fit snugly into the pop tab, keeping your drinking experience smooth and leak-free.
Whether we realize it or not, every object in our lives has a story behind its design and purpose. By peeling back the layers of these everyday items, we can discover fascinating secrets and appreciate the ingenuity that goes into creating them. So next time you reach for your favorite drink or grab a seat on the bus, remember – there's often more to it than meets the eye!
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello everybody and welcome back to my channel so you may have clicked on this video like what is this video what's going on so how this all came about I was doing my laundry the other day and I noticed if there's like a little mini door on the bottom left of my washer and I was like what is this is this something I need to be aware of do I need to be cleaning it is it like a portal to another dimension what's going on here so I started researching as I do and let me tell you I got caught in such a rabbit hole I started with this little door in the washer and where we ended up I mean you guys will see it's quite a journey and I think this is so interesting I only knew maybe two or three of them before doing this research so hopefully you will find this interesting if you like this I would love nothing more than to continue doing more of these videos because I have over a hundred I'm just gonna be sharing maybe like 10 or 15 today if you are new here please subscribe I would love to have you I do all sorts of different fun home and lifestyle related videos with all that sad let's go ahead and start with the first one and since it inspired this video the first one is going to be the little door on the washing machine now this is on front-loading washing machines I believe only and it is actually kind of like a little secret trap door it is the drain trap so if you're ever washing something and there's loose change or buttons or things that go missing a drain out into this portal a little area in your front loader so that they don't jam up your machine and you are supposed to regularly open up empty it out there's also gonna be extra water and liquid there so you want to have a little container if I do water comes spilling out so next time you're at the grocery store pay a little bit closer attention to your grocery cart because there is a really cool hidden feature on this that I had no clue existed and it's actually very handy so the child seat compartment in the front of your grocery cart if you look closely there are little hooks kind of loops on the back of the seat which I never thought twice about I never really even noticed turns out those hooks are designed for you to hang your grocery bags on that have your more delicate items that could get crushed so bread eggs things like that you could hang it off of those loops when you're packing up your cart to go so your items don't get crushed I mean I feel like even people at the grocery store don't even know this because I've never seen anybody use the loops and you better believe now I'm gonna be using that because that's very very handy all right next up we're going to be talking about the humble pen right and you may or may not have noticed that on the caps of these pens is a hole right here I can see through here all pens with caps have this hole but why what is the purpose of the hole is it for air circulation so pressure doesn't build up in the pet is it a seeing eye hole does it just look cool all right so the real purpose of this hole on your pen caps is because these pen caps are a choking hazard for young children so the manufacturers went ahead and put a little hole here so in the event that a child were to swallow or be choking on the cap there would be a little hole that air could still pass through and minimize the choking hazard yeah kind of crazy I never knew that and I have to say I very much appreciate that as the mother of a small child next we're going to talk about the wooden hanger now I always saw these and just kind of thought well these are just a nicer hanger a higher-end hanger for people who are fancy the fancy people have the nice wooden hangers little did I know there's actually a purpose and that purpose is they're made out of a cedar wood and this is a repellent to moths and other bugs and critters that can get up in your coat closet and make it all musty so specifically these wooden hangers should be used with your wolf coats your nice bigger coat in your coat closet and will help keep everything fresh and repel moths now we're gonna talk a little bit about some clothing item features that just I found very fascinating underwear women's panties now you may or may not have known that most underwear for women there's a little pocket in the crotch like why why is there a pocket are we supposed to be keeping our spare change in here and the reason is fascinating to me okay there is that second layer fabric here for hygienic purposes but most of the clothing manufacturers don't want to spend the extra time and money to make a final seam to close off this extra piece of fabric so that's the reason the higher-end manufacturers we were making the more expensive underwear they'll go to the extra effort to close the seam here and the lazy the less expensive manufacturers they just don't have the time they don't care so there's no real purpose to the pocket it's really just a matter of lazy manufacturers I'm curious is that anybody out there like use the pocket next up is another clothing related one and it has to do with your jeans and you may be thinking Brittany what do you know about jeans you don't wear jeans you only wear like it true but I do still have jeans for you know the few special occasions a year that I wear them and there's a couple little features on here that I never noticed and I thought this was very interesting so the first one almost all jeans have this little extra mini pocket little guy right here why is there a little extra pocket here little coin pocket for change the real reason is when jeans first came out back in the day it was common for people to have pocket watches so this pocket is designed for pocket watches which is just crazy to me I don't even think I've ever seen a pocket watch in real life maybe they'll be in style again and this hidden feature of jeans will again be relevant and handy because I just think it's so fascinating like why do they continue to put the pocket here even though no one carries pocket watches anymore boggles the mind so in your pots and pans if you take a look you'll notice that almost all of them across the board have this little hole on the end of the handle which I always assumed was a hole to hook them if you want to hook them on the wall or hook them somewhere in your kitchen right apparently there is a dual purpose to this and the other purpose is to put your wooden spoon or your slotted spoon as you're cooking to hold it in place like so I mean it makes so much sense but I just never thought about it and I think this is so cool so this is definitely a trick that I will be using while I'm cooking in the future so this next one is one of them that I did know before but I have to share because I only learned it about five years ago and it's the most helpful thing to know it's when you're driving in your car you need to get gas what side is the gas tank on for years I would just try to memorize it the best I could all you have to do is look on the little gas indicator and there's gonna be a little arrow next to the picture of the gas tank that arrow is gonna tell you what side your tank is on another thing in the car that potentially could save your life so listen up is the headrests in cars are removable most of them are at least so you can pull them out and there the metal spikes in the back of your headrest so those can be used in an emergency so if you are in a bad car accident and you need to break open the window you can pull out the headrest use those metal rods to smash open the window paper college-ruled paper has these margins around the outside and I always kind of just assumed oh there's just a little extra buffer room for when you're writing give you extra space so the real reason for this margin on the outside the paper is for protecting your work but not for the reason you might think it was actually for protecting your work from rats because it used to be very common that rats lived in households and their favorite little snack was paper and so by adding this little margin it gave a buffer for the rats if they wanted to snack on the paper it would protect your actual writing and your work in the middle I know that sounds really gross and like it made it up but currently it's true so these last four all have to do with drink containers kind of random but also pretty cool so we're gonna start with a juice box something you've probably never thought about in your life but juice boxes have these extra little tabs on the side that you can pull out and these are made here for your kids to be able to hold on to as they're drinking the juice box because it's easier for them to hold it like this securely then hold it like this and squeeze the juice out because when you're holding the juice box sometime then you squeeze it you know the juice goes flying so we'll try this out with Carter and see how it goes next up in beer bottles or soda bottles that have the long neck here why is there the long neck it makes it kind of inconvenient to drink out of I don't know like the small opening I don't love it but there's actually a reason for this and it's kind of crazy when you think about it so this spout is actually where you're supposed to hold the drink so that the warmth of your hand doesn't warm down the drink kind of like a wine glass you're supposed to hold the stem so the warmth of your hand doesn't change the temperature of the wine yeah same thing for beer bottles and for soda bottles like this but I don't think in my entire life I've ever seen anybody holding it from the stem so next time you're at a party you can go you can tell everybody no this is one I knew but I still think it's cool so I want to share Solo cups you know the staple of every college party in America but these lines are actually measurement and they'll tell you a couple things so this first line all the way on the bottom this is one out so if you wanted to pour a shot you would line it up with this bottom Ridge and that's one ounce the second line here is five ounces and that is the traditional pour of a glass of wine so if you're being extra classy drinking your wine out of your solo cup you fill it up to here and then the third line here is 12 ounces and that is your traditional pour for a beer I mean I don't think I've used to Solo Cup in a long time but this would have been handy for me to know back in the day when I was in college I could have been pressed my friends so soda cans right open this bad boy up I love that sound has a little pop tab which of course is used to open the soda can there's a hole on the back of that tab that is designed you're supposed to turn that little tab around and that is the little holder for your straw so your straw doesn't go moving around and bouncing out of your soda can so we have our little reusable straw here that is freakishly large compared to this so it again and it just holds your straw perfectly in place it's not gonna move around I don't know what possessed me to buy ginger ale but here we are alright so that is gonna be it for now like I have over a hundred of these I just kind of wanted to do a little experiment see if you guys like this video if you do I mean I would love to do more of them so give this a thumbs up if you enjoyed it if you found it interesting let me know in the comment which of these did you not know that now you know if you watched all the way to the end of the video I would really appreciate if you could just take a moment and subscribe if you are new here I would love to have you and then you'll just be notified of any new videos that come out so have a great rest of your day and I will see you guys soon with a new video byehello everybody and welcome back to my channel so you may have clicked on this video like what is this video what's going on so
