**Vizio MQ7J Series Review**
After muscling the white balance a bit, I got errors well down into the acceptable range and colors were more accurate than I was expecting out of a TV at this price. Now, as for peak brightness, the TV came in at 621 nits peak from a 10-window in HDR which is a little bit lower than the promised 700 nits which I bet is what you get from Vivid or Standard picture modes. Still, I can see the TV hitting 700 nits in small specular highlights which I think is pretty solid for a TV at this price and at the very least does HDR some justice. Good news is that peak brightness comes alongside some respectable black levels; it looks to me like Vizio has changed its local dimming system a bit and I'm seeing a bit less blooming and halo around bright objects on dark backgrounds that's another step in the right direction.
As for motion handling, it's okay, I'm not gonna jump up and down in excitement here but again it's competitive at its price. I mean we're looking at a 60Hz panel here which I think is this TV's one notable weakness especially if we're asking if it can hold a candle to the TCL R635 also the lack of control around motion smoothing, frame interpolation, etc., I'm not sure if I think that was a smart move or a really dumb one. I like to have control, I am a control freak and Vizio ain't let me have that here so I'm struggling but once I get over myself step back and just watch the TV I'm impressed by the MQ7J series there's some depth to the imagery HDR images have some good punch to them the black levels are consistently better than I go in expecting them to be and the color is very good when it is off, it's not way off you have to be a bit of a colored nerd to know that hey, that Netflix logo isn't exactly right.
You know what I mean so on the whole yeah, I'm impressed. To put things in perspective if someone comes up to me and says "hey, I want to get a 65-inch TV and spend less than $1,000" I'll point them to the MQ7J series in a heartbeat same goes for the 70-inch here and 75-inch models; the price-to-size-to-performance mix is great. Does it steal some of the TCL R635's thunder? Yeah, a little bit the TCL R635 is better in several respects but have you checked its price lately Vizio is seriously undercutting TCL right now so yeah eyes are going to move to this Vizio TV.
**Gaming with the MQ7J Series**
Remember that disappointment bomb I mentioned earlier? Well, it's not quite as bad as I'd feared but it's still an issue. So here's the deal: just connecting the Xbox Series X to the TV I got this; if you aren't familiar is the Xbox Series X 4K TV detail screen and what we'd like to see is mostly green check marks and as few red x's as possible. But, rot row something's not right look the TV isn't even registering as 4K capable let alone 4K 60Hz or HDR gaming or nothing except for Dolby Vision somehow that bit of info is getting through.
So, I rebooted the TV, I restarted the Xbox Series X, I swapped out Ultra High-Speed HDMI cables, I switched through every HDMI input on the TV, nothing. I did solve this problem; I mean, I'm stuck with 1080p 30fps non-HDR no VRR gaming. The programming engine is on but this can't be right right it's not right. Check this out: you have to go into picture settings select input settings and from here where it says HDMI mode it's on auto and that should work but it doesn't force it to HDMI 2.1.
Now, we're talking the TV is cooperating with the Series X console as it should now that I've been through all this I remember this problem from last year, but folks, this should be fixed if you don't know to make that one setting you'll be disappointed with how your next-gen console interacts with this TV out of the box. This has to be addressed anyway; that gaming issue aside, I'm seriously impressed by this new MQ7J series from Vizio; it measures up to what I felt like the M-series should have been last year and I would recommend it to anyone looking for solid performance at a reasonable price. I feel like Vizio has gone back to owning that territory thanks again for watching everyone; what do you think about the Vizio MQ7J series was it on your radar before, and if it wasn't is it now? Also know that I will pin a comment with an update about the weird gaming issue as soon as I get one so click like and subscribe check back in with me soon.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: eni have to admit i feel like i've been in a time warp lately but my perception of time be damned vizio's new tv lineup is here and we're going to start by reviewing the new mq7j here now i was pretty hard on vizio's last lineup of tvs will this go round be any different welcome back everyone i'm caleb dennison and in my unboxing video for this tv i kind of went off on the confusion generated by vizio when it unleashed its 2021 tvs in the middle of june 2020. i also had to laugh when vizio just unleashed its other 2021 tvs at the beginning of june 2021. no i'm not crazy that's what happened the time warp part though that comes in to distort things because it does not seem like it was that long ago that i was sitting right here reviewing the mq7-h series and really it wasn't due to shipping delays and other stuff i didn't get to that tv until right around the new year so it's only been six months huh go figure anyway here we are with the new asked vizio m series or one of them anyway we'll get into that in a moment before we dig into it you know what's coming don't you comment time yes indeed this is where i ask you to weigh in with your feelings on vizio we already have a new m series and a new p series and a new p quantum x can you believe it are you excited for them are they on your radar now leave me a comment about that below and while you're down there please click like and subscribe so you'll be among the first to see our new tv review videos and hey we hit 1 million subscribers we're gonna have ourselves a party or at least a giveaway so click those buttons like my life depends on it thanks so much for caring okay let's do this so to be clear here we're looking at the new vizio mq7 dash j series tv last year it was uh dash h this happens to be the 70 inch model you can also get the new mq7j in 50 55 58 65 and 75 inch variants and inch per inch they are all priced very competitively now not to confuse you but there is also an mq6 series that's right the mq8 from last year is gone and now we have an mq6 that's a less expensive series of tv without local dimming so if you're out there shopping make sure you're looking for the m something q7-j whatever that way you'll know that you're looking at the tv i'm about to talk about now the 70 inch model i have here claims to have 32 zones of local dimming which doesn't sound like a lot and that's because it really isn't a ton but then this is a mid-level tv now this model is also meant to top out at 700 nits of brightness which frankly isn't too bad especially where this tv is priced you can expect the same brightness from the 65 inch and 75 inch models as well this tv also claims to have vizio's pro gaming engine built in with support of up to 4k 60 hertz this tv does not have a 120 hertz panel okay as well as variable refresh rate with auto low latency mode now that sounds pretty decent again for the price also and this was a smart move if a bit late vizio now offers a voice remote for many of its tv so you can do basic search for content you want to watch it's not as powerful as google alexa or siri but if you want to use those assistants you can use a smart speaker to order this tv around airplay 2 is also around for you apple fans out there as is apple's home kit in case you cared so for the evaluation of this tv i want to break things down to the smart tv system the sound system and then finally the big category picture quality be sure to stick with me here because i may start out sounding like i'm not too stoked but then i'm going to change my tune big time and you're going to want to hear what i have to say and then there's a big bummer bomb coming after that but my point is stick around because you need to know these things about this tv okay so smartcast look i'm sure there are a lot of smart people behind smartcast and i appreciate the effort and all i also know it's tough to be out there with your own smart tv platform when you've got roku and google tv just cleaning up and even amazon fire tv is making its mark thing is i just don't like it i'm sorry i wish i could tell you why but i just don't like the look of it i don't like the feel i mean there are some similarities to google tv but it's not for me personal preference maybe you guys out there don't feel so strongly but i can guarantee you that if i bought this tv i'd be buying a chromecast with google tv to go with it next is sound quality and again it's a hard nope for me i don't like the way this tv sounds and i would say even the most modest sound bar is going to be better fortunately when it comes to affordable sound bars that sound really good vizio has that market locked up so if you decide to buy this tv and i think you just might by the time i'm done here then plan to get a sound bar with it because it will dramatically improve the experience no matter what it is you're watching even dog will vouch for that now picture quality before i get into this section let's just acknowledge that i have been hard on vizio the past couple of years why is that well honestly it's because vizio occupies a kind of awkward sort of middle child place in the market right now it used to be the underdog where it was coming in hot with really decent picture quality at a price that was unheard of then tcl and hysense showed up and started getting scrappy in the underdog game and so you have vizio which is a more established brand in the us than tcl and high sense but for whatever reason seems like it isn't getting the recognition it deserves it's a hard place to be but i think this tv may change that without pulling out my light meters and calman software just turning this tv on and watching content i've watched countless times in the past my immediate reaction was yeah okay that's not bad that's better vizio that's what i've been missing so i went ahead and went at the tv with the c6 meter and the calman software and out of the box the white balance was a little wacky and the color was a bit off target as well but after muscling the white balance a bit i got errors well down into the acceptable range and colors were more accurate than i was expecting out of a tv at this price now as for peak brightness the tv came in at 621 nits peak from a 10 window in hdr which is a little bit lower than the
