NIC's Road to Recovery: A Desperate Search for Inspiration
As NIC navigated his kitchen, he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. After a decade working with the same dishes, he wondered if he could actually cook anything new and exciting. His thoughts were interrupted by his Rottweiler, who wagged its tail enthusiastically as NIC mentioned the phrase "Ready Steady." NIC chuckled and said, "No, no, no! Don't look at me like that! Come back to me, some form of inspiration there's ingredients left!" He had bought basic local ingredients, and with a sudden urge, he decided to give his two sous chefs, Nick and Tim, 20 minutes to come up with some dishes that could be sold.
NIC handed out bags of onion legs and potatoes to each chef, telling them to get creative. As they worked, NIC watched anxiously, hoping that one of them would finally hit a culinary home run. Nick was seen smoking as he prepared his dish, while Tim looked focused on his own creation. NIC warned Nick about burning the mackerel and urged him to add some flavor with garlic butter. When the time was up, NIC asked both chefs to present their dishes.
Nick proudly presented his simply grilled mackerel with lemon juice and sautéed potatoes, garnished with black rocks. However, when NIC asked if he would serve this dish in one of his restaurants, Nick hesitated, saying it needed a lot of work. NIC agreed, feeling that the presentation was lacking. Tim's dish was not mentioned by NIC at this point.
NIC revealed that his true intention was to create a fileted mackerel on top of a warm potato salad as both starter and main course. He had planned to serve two pounds of food for 38 people, which would help him make money since he needed to open his business the next day. NIC expressed frustration with Nick's performance, feeling that he couldn't get anything out of him.
As NIC reflected on the experience, he realized that change was necessary if he wanted to improve his restaurant. He acknowledged that he wasn't an impulsive person and usually thought things through before acting. However, despite his best efforts, NIC suspected that Gordon would become even more frustrated with him as the week went on. In turn, NIC feared that he would get increasingly frustrated with himself.
NIC's journey towards recovery had just begun, but it was clear that he needed to embrace change and find new ways to inspire his team.
