DIY Winter Incense Logs - HGTV Handmade

The Crafty Lumberjacks Bring Warmth to Your Home with Handmade Incense

As the winter season arrives, many people miss the cozy warmth of a fireplace in their homes. The Crafty Lumberjacks, Andrew and Dennis, are here to help you recreate that feeling without the need for a physical fireplace. In this episode of HGTV's Handmade, they'll be making incense that smells like a warm fire using three simple ingredients: blue sage, cedar, and maca powder.

To begin, the Lumberjacks will grind their cedar and blue sage in a coffee grinder to get into a powder consistency. This is an alternative to the traditional method of using a mortar and pestle, but they recommend avoiding it for fine or delicate herbs like these. The goal is to achieve a consistent mixture, which they estimate will be around 2 tablespoons of cedar to 1 tablespoon of blue sage.

The final ingredient in their incense recipe is maca powder, which serves as a binder that combines the other two ingredients and adds combustibility to create a slow-burning effect. For this recipe, the Lumberjacks will add 1 tablespoon of maca powder, mixing it with distilled water using a dropper to ensure the right consistency. They want to avoid creating too much soupy or slimy mixture, so they'll work slowly and carefully.

Once the ingredients are mixed together, the Lumberjacks will roll them into small logs using parchment paper. The goal is to achieve a thickness similar to that of a straw, approximately 1 inch. After rolling the incense, they'll cut it into smaller pieces and place them on a tray to dry completely. To speed up the drying process, they recommend rotating the incense every few hours until about 12 hours have passed.

To hold their handmade incense logs in place, the Lumberjacks have found wooden logs that fit perfectly with their design. They've drilled a small hole in the center of each log to accommodate the incense and glued on a little gold washer for added decoration. To add an extra touch, they've also wrapped up old and new matchboxes with buffalo plaid fabric, making them perfect gifts for someone who would appreciate a handmade, winter-themed present.

The Lumberjacks are excited to share their unique incense-making process with you, and invite you to experiment with different herbs and ingredients to create your own signature blends. They hope that this handmade incense will bring warmth and comfort to those around them, even when they can't enjoy a physical fireplace. With its simple ingredients and easy-to-follow instructions, anyone can try making their own handmade incense at home.

As the episode comes to an end, Andrew and Dennis reflect on their creative process and invite you to share your own experiences with homemade incense in the comments below. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhey everyone I'm Andrew this is Dennis we're the crafty Lumberjacks welcome back to HGTV handmade well the holidays are over but the winter is just arriving there's one thing that we miss from our apartment is a fireplace we really wish we did so today we're gonna be making incense that smells like a warm fire to make this incense you're gonna need three ingredients blue sage cedar and maca powder great so the first thing we're gonna do is we are going to grind our cedar and our blue sage in a coffee grinder to get into a powder consistency you could go the old-fashioned way here and use a mortar and pestle but we're gonna take a shortcut and use our coffee grinder we don't recommend this for really um like fine delicate herbs but the cedar is so tough it really doesn't work very well in the mortar and pestle and we're putting about two tablespoons of the cedar to one tablespoon of the blue sage and for the final ingredient we're gonna add the maca powder maca powder is a bark and it's really going to combine all our ingredients together and it's also combustible so it's gonna burn nice and slowly and create the incense and for this we're adding one tablespoon mix the ingredients together using distilled water you can probably use regular water but on the safe side we just want to use some distilled water and we're gonna add a little bit at a time because we don't want to make sure to get too soupy or slimy so we're gonna use a dropper for that I use incense in college men all the time burning in the dorm rooms I was in our race okay we're gonna take a little bit and just kind of put it all together here we know what you're thinking it looks like a falafel you usually see these in a cone shape or on a stick but we wanted to try our own way and we're gonna be making little logs yeah so we're just gonna take a little bit and we're just gonna start rolling it here on our parchment paper so we're just gonna keep rolling it trying to keep it as even as we can we want it about the thickness of a straw yeah the thickness of a straw and we're gonna cut them to about a little over an inch we're gonna put these on a tray to dry they dry pretty quickly but you just want to make sure that you rotate them every now and then just so that it dries on all sides yeah so I mean maybe 12 hours so we found these wooden logs which we thought looks so great with our incense to act as the instance holder we just drilled a hole right in the center there we didn't go all the way through because we don't want our incense to fall and then we're just gonna glue on a little gold washer that we found we also wrapped up an old matchbox and a new matchbox with a little buffalo plaid this would make a great gift for someone you didn't
