The World of Model Making and WonderFest

It was like that's why I asked you I was like holy cow yes please oh this is Tom's wonderful yeah wow and then uh I did the I want to move to Maine so I did a New England Lighthouse okay and then uh I at the last minute impulsive idea I did you know grandmother's kitchen from the 1970s it's kind of a weird one it was like a cutting board and like the cabinets and table legs oh did like a race one and a little pirate one my friend Mike uh we both had the same kind of car in high school and college so mark one GTI uh Volkswagen and he made this one for me and I almost cried like when he gave it to me a couple days ago because it's so amazing so it's this is a mark one golf ball shifter I had a black with red pinstripe he had a red with black pinstripe so like this out of everything here I'm like this is the only one I care about now this is like more precious to me than anything like because that's like high school and friendship all you know put together that's right when I look at you know the the more abstract ideas right it and I love glappies here yeah the way he put the flag oh it's so great the turrets mounted up but it speaks to how iconic the turret design is even when you're doing a lighthouse you know you know what it is yeah you can see and say oh of course that's on the Death Star yeah yeah I mean you don't you don't want ships running into the Death Star yeah yeah on a foggy night but it still lets you mess with scale yeah yeah and then uh Lee did the King Kong one Echo style holy crap he told me he was going to do that and I was like that's a great idea and then when I saw it I was like over the moon I was like that's way cooler than I thought it ever could be like the way he's grabbing the X-ray it's so violent you know and he's got those those buttresses those Deco oh he's just perfect yeah so yeah this was a lot of fun and I it's a participatory thing like we hope that next year whatever we come up with got a couple ideas cooking uh everybody gets behind you know it's it's nice to have a deadline like a crushing deadline um and it just you know gets the juices flowing well it speaks to everyone's different than their passions you know whether it's Tom smina's Creek level creatures I see the paint scheme of the uh that he loves and even though even though you know the vanilla ones all have a unique like take and I just love to see everybody's variation I love that cutaway yeah that's our two yeah oh yeah wow yeah

The Castings and Attention to Detail

I I think I painted this one pretty sure it's this one yeah um and I didn't paint it like they were in the movies I I made them a little nicer so they hold up to scrutiny so even that's like different so did the castings have the styrene panel on top or is that all done by the the artists themselves the extra oh no that's all the all the panels and and um and chips detail that's all part of the casting that's all part of the casting got it yeah that's where I see some of the consistency yeah lots of extremely clean casting Mike's a good Mike's a good Caster to him yeah what a fun project and even something like you know like you call it vanilla like this you notice there's different different shading different colors different tones and is that that's true to what the original was The Originals were a little rougher the rougher um I'm adding um because somebody's going to want to look at it up close and enjoy it a little more than just whizzing by on the screen you kind of have to give it a little more tonal variation and give it a little more love well it's fun of course for all the attendees to check out the closer you look like you see this okay I kind of get what's going on but the more you look the more fun yeah and the Dinoco one man I mean he told me about it I saw a little thumbnail sketch and then he showed me a picture and then when it showed up it was like this is so much better in person for some reason it was like holy crap yeah it's one of the joys of coming to the show you guys and your fellow model makers coming and one of the reasons we love being here for the first time this year you guys got to make it out to WonderFest we're gonna be here every year fingers crossed Jason thank you so much thank you thank you a wonderful project and can't wait to see you guys next year yeah absolutely foreign

space yeah here in one of the dealer rooms showing off some of the things you've built specifically for the show long-term projects but something in front of us which of course can be familiar to Star Wars fans out there Death Star towers with a Twist yes tell me about this project every year uh our little group Bill George had this idea one time let's let's do a fun group build and it's it's become kind of a tradition every year that we all sort of band together and do a group thing and I was loaned large and small Death Star Tower from Jedi it just shows up in my house yeah everybody you know occasionally it's a little screenings you know like nonsense comes into your house ridiculous um and I re-patterned it very easy to do when the thing is sitting in front of you I did that with uh the New Hope one a couple years ago also I restored an original for someone and I was like do you mind if I completely replicate this and he's like knock your socks off so we've got this this pattern now done and uh my friend Mike molded and cast them and everybody bought a casting either they could buy the larger the smaller both didn't matter and the idea was paint it up bring it to WonderFest and then I was like hey maybe do a weird fun one uh you know like let's let's go nuts and interpret it and some people did and some people didn't and totally fine I asked Tom Spina oh for Tom yeah for like you know 20 years and I was like hey would you do one look at the creature one well and he goes do you mind if it's a monster and it was like that's why I asked you I was like holy cow yes please oh this is Tom's wonderful yeah wow and then uh I did the I want to move to Maine so I did a New England Lighthouse okay and then uh I at the last minute impulsive idea I did you know grandmother's kitchen from the 1970s it's kind of a weird one it was like a cutting board and like the cabinets and table legs oh did like a race one and a little pirate one my friend Mike uh we both had the same kind of car in high school and college so mark one GTI uh Volkswagen and he made this one for me and I almost cried like when he gave it to me a couple days ago because it's so amazing so it's this is a mark one golf ball shifter I had a black with red pinstripe he had a red with black pinstripe so like this out of everything here I'm like this is the only one I care about now this is like more precious to me than anything like because that's like high school and friendship all you know put together that's right when I look at you know the the more abstract ideas right it and I love glappies here yeah the way he put the flag oh it's so great the turrets mounted up but it speaks to how iconic the turret design is even when you're doing a lighthouse you know you know what it is yeah you can see and say oh of course that's on the Death Star yeah yeah I mean you don't you don't want ships running into the Death Star yeah yeah on a foggy night but it still lets you mess with scale yeah yeah and then uh lee did the King Kong one Echo style holy crap he told me he was going to do that and I was like that's a great idea and then when I saw it I was like over the moon I was like that's way cooler than I thought it ever could be like the way he's grabbing the X-ray it's so violent you know and he's got those those buttresses those Deco oh he's just perfect yeah so yeah this was a lot of fun and I it's a participatory thing like we hope that next year whatever we come up with got a couple ideas cooking uh everybody gets behind you know it's it's nice to have a deadline like a crushing deadline um and it just you know gets the juices flowing well it speaks to everyone's different than their passions you know whether it's Tom smina's Creek level creatures I see the paint scheme of the uh that he loves and even though even though you know the vanilla ones all have a unique like take and I just love to see everybody's variation I love that cutaway yeah that's our two yeah oh yeah that's all part of the casting that's all part of the casting got it yeah that's where I see some of the consistency yeah lots of extremely clean casting Mike's a good Mike's a good Caster to him yeah what a fun project and even something like you know like you call it vanilla like this you notice there's different different shading different colors different tones and is that that's true to what the original was The Originals were a little rougher the rougher um I'm adding um because somebody's going to want to look at it up close and enjoy it a little more than just whizzing by on the screen you kind of have to give it a little more tonal variation and give it a little more love well it's fun of course for all the attendees to check out the closer you look like you see this okay I kind of get what's going on but the more you look the more fun yeah and the Dinoco one man I mean he told me about it I saw a little thumbnail sketch and then he showed me a picture and then when it showed up it was like this is so much better in person for some reason it was like holy crap yeah it's one of the joys of coming to the show you guys and your fellow model makers coming and one of the reasons we love being here for the first time this year you guys got to make it out to WonderFest we're gonna be here every year fingers crossed Jason thank you so much thank you thank you a wonderful project
