The Scrapinator: A Gaming PC Rebuild
Hey guys, this is Austin, and I'm here with Jay to redeem ourselves after our last gaming PC rebuild attempt. Today, we're going to bring back The Scrapinator - a $50 PC that Jay and I bought off Craigslist last year.
So, let's start by finding the system and checking if we can find any other parts that we can salvage from this old PC. I hope I didn't lose it, but we'll also see what kind of power supply is inside. If we're going to put a Ryzen 5 processor with a decent GPU, like the 1060 ITX card, we don't know what kind of power supply we have, but I'm sure it's garbage.
As we search for parts, we can dig up some old videos to get an idea of what we're working with. We did this video back in September, and now we need to go through the footage to see if we can find any clues about the power supply. Okay, let's take a look at this 1060 ITX card that we have. It's not ITX but has a small Core Factor power supply.
I love these ideas, Jay! So, we need a power supply, right? What do you think this system is going to pull at full load? I'm just going to take a wild guess, and you can try and make me do it. Well, I've got something that might work for both of us.
As we rummage through the parts, I find a power supply that barely fits in here. It might not fit, but we can make it work. The Scrapinator lives again! Ah, there it is - right back at us. We knew it was in here somewhere.
Now that we have all our parts, let's take a closer look at what we're working with. Unfortunately, this case doesn't have any fans on it currently, except for the stock fan and an 80mm power supply fan. I want to reuse as much of this system as possible, but I think the motherboard has to come out because we can't use a single-core Athlon.
We've got eight gigs of RAM, and hopefully, we can bump that up to 16. We also have a 1060 GPU that should work pretty well with our new build. In addition, we stole a small fan and a 1 terabyte hard drive from the Dell, so this is looking like the beginnings of a great build.
First things first, I want to keep it as original-looking on the outside as possible. From the inside, we can make it look whatever we want, but I kinda like the idea of it looking like a $50 Craigslist PC - unsuspecting and all that.
We'll just gut everything out of here, and then slowly rebuild with whatever parts we can salvage. Unfortunately, there's not going to be much left when we're ready to build in it. We need to keep the soul of this guy though - The Scrapinator has to live on in more than just its body.
As for the panel, I don't think anyone has ever taken it off in the last 10 years, and there's no doubt that someone had a DVD drive back then. Let's take a closer look at this old modem - what's the date on it? And what did it say? June, 2007.
WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- Hey guys, this is Austin. So last time, Jay andI may or may not havemade a little bit of a mistake, but today, we're here to redeem ourselves.- What are we gonna do?- We're gonna rebuild: The Scrapinator. The Scrapinator is a $50 PC that Jay and Igot off of Craigslist last yearthat we attempted to turn into a gaming PCwith less than perfect results.Single core 2.4 gigahertz.Oops.So right now, let's go tostorage, let's knock out, basically let's go see ifwe can find the system--I hope I didn't lose it.But let's also see if wecan find some other parts'cause I assume we're gonnahave to gut most of it.- Yeah.- So if we're gonna put Ryzen5 inside with a decent GPUI don't know what kindof power supply's insidebut I'm sure it's garbage.Alright, so this is gonna be fun.So when did we do the video, September? We're gonna have to do some digging.- Okay, we got a1060 ITX card in here.Or it's not ITX buta small core factor.Power supply, we've got a 600 watt.- Okay, let's keep an eye on this,we also do have one other case back here, but I think that 1060especially should work.Alright, I have a terrible idea.- I love those ideas.- So we need a power supply, right? What do you think this systemis gonna pull at full load?Just wild guess.- Well, I dunno, we'vegot the way you wanna do itand the way I'm kinda gonnatry and make you do it.- Well I gotsomething that might workfor both of us.- Okay.(rustling)Listen, that'll fit barely.- It might not, but we can make it fit.- It's not too too long.I've got the same power supply.- The Scrapinator lives again.- I still don't see whatwe came in here for.(chuckle) Oh there it is, right there.- Oh, I knew that.Alright, what do we got here?Ah, we can work with that.So the problem with this case is thatit actually doesn't have anyfans at all in it right now,it just has the stock fan.- And the powersupply 80mm fan, that's it.- I want to, like, reuseas we can from this, but I do think thismotherboard's gotta come out. There's no way we're gonnause a single core Athlon. So right now, we have eight gigs of RAM,hopefully we can bump that up to 16.We've got a 1060, which Ithink should work pretty well, and then we stole a small fanas well as a 1 terabytehard drive from the Dell.So this is looking like the beginnings(thudding) of a build.Alright, let's get to work on this guy.So, first of all, I think the big thingI wanna do with this iskeep it as original lookingon the outside as possible.I don't wanna give itaway from the outside. From the inside, we canmake it look whatever, but I kinda like theidea of it looking likea $50 Craigslist PC.- Well the idea is thatit's just unsuspecting.- So I think: first stepshould just be guttingeverything out of here, and then I thinkwe can slowly rebuild with whatever partsthat we can salvage.- Yeah, I don't thinkthere's gonna be much left.literally, it's justgonna be a steel framewhen we're ready to build in it.- We gotta keep the soulof this guy though, man.we gotta like, theScrapinator has to live onin more than just body.- Do you think this panelhas ever been taken offin the last 10 years?- I don't think so.I think that is original.(mocking laughter)- That's like half a cat in there. No no so I'm not takingresponsibility for that. That was not us.- You can see where he wiped it.That modem though. What's the date on it, what'd it say?June, 2007.I just love that someone hada DVD drive and were like"You know what I need?"A CD drive."I thought maybe we couldhave blown this outbefore we started tearing it down.- It's okay, we're in yourstudio so I'm fine with it.- It's like those carshows where they findsome car that's been sittingin the garage for like40 years and they justlike pressure wash it down.- Or like thosehome remodeling shows thatcrack open a wall andit's full of dead rats.- Man that's quality right there.- Look at that gauge wire.- We wouldn't have wantedto use that at all.- No way.- There we go.- Yeah, we're gonna, we just...- There we go,that's where it belongs.(door clatters)- I like the idea of keepingthe outside fairly original,but.- I feel like a lot of what we have to dois gonna depend on a couple of things. One, power supply size.We have to go fan insidebecause there is no vent there.- For sure for sure.- Oh wait. (laughs)Okay, crisis number one.- Yeah?- We have to turn it around the other waybecause the modular cables hit the frame.- Wait, it's backwards.- Yeah, there you are.(laughter)- I was just testing you.- Actually, that doesn't look crazy.- No, that sure looks like it fits.- Yeah, that's pretty reasonable.- Well because it'sblack and kind of a platinum colorand that's sort of thecolor of this build.- See, we're themed onthis, this is intentional.- So now it's time forour Ryzen 5 processor. So this is the 1500X.So what that means is it is quad-core.So it's kind of againstthe Core i5, I'd say.So for this, it shouldbe more than enough. To go along with it, though,we have a B350 motherboard. Now, the only issue is: Idon't know if this actuallyhas a BIOS update thatwill work with Ryzen 5.I hope it'll just work outof the box, 'cause if not--- Oh, dude, perfect.- Standing up straight?Oh, I got a piece in the way.Oh dude!Is this actually gonna work right now?We have enough clearance in the back.We actually have a lotof clearance over herewhen we wanna run cables.- Yeah there's more clearancethan I expected there to be.- Okay, here comes the funpart: installing the 1500X.And with that, we have aRyzen heart in our build. So the 1060 should definitely fit.I almost wonder, though:this is going so well,we could actually maybestep it up a little bit.- What'd you have in mind?- I dunno, maybe like a 1080, 1080Ti?Something like that.- You're in luck, 'causeI usually have one on me.- Is that gonna fit, though?'Cause we've got this drive cage here.- I don't think so, I don'tthink it's gonna fit at all.- Oh man, not even close. So yeah, we don't needthese bottom drives.'Cause we're gonna fill the 5.25s.(whirring and sparking)(cracking metal)This is gonna work, isn't it?Alright, now comes the funpart: did that actually work?Ooh it's still so tight, just gotta slide her in.- Oh you know what?- Nah, looks like it'salright, just needs a little--- It barely clearedthough, lemme tell you why:Because I was basing it off the top slot, and they don't use the top slot.- Ooh!Alright, well, that's looking pretty good.I think now it's just a thingof getting some cabling, throwing the memory in.I think this should work. The only other thing is gonna be cooling, but I think, let's getthis all up and runningand then we'll figure that out.So since the Scrapinatoris accidentally becomingkinda cool, instead of usinga 1 terabyte hard drive, instead we're going to beusing a Samsung 950 Pro.Alright, now we have an NVMeSSD, where's our memory? This is the only part I'mactually a little nervous about.I know Ryzen has some issues with memory, especially when you get higher clocked stuff.- Worst case scenario,we do it with one stick.- And there we go.This is looking like an actual system.- Is there anything elseneeds to be plugged inon the bottom?Like a...- Front panel. That's proprietary tothe other motherboard.- We can plug it in and hope that it'smiraculously the exact same layout.- Okay, it's got the exact same pin-outas the one on this motherboard. There's no way we're that lucky.- Hopefully it works. If it doesn't work:then, we're gonna have to--- I have faith!- Everything about this build is soclose we're barely making it.Like ugh, look at that! There's not any slack onthat whatsoever, but it fits.Let's start doing power supply.- Teamwork, I got you I got you.- I got it.Don't move, don't wiggle.- That's it.Hey, Jay got it in!- Amazing what a little light can dowhen it comes to insertion force.- Time for the moment of truth. There are a lot ofthings that can go wrong.- There still are, yeah.Lots of things.- Ready?- Oh my god!- What?- We got lucky!- The pin-outs were identical.- Dude, dude!- 10 year old motherboardmatched the pin-outs.I told you, I'm prettysure they were standard,- But just in case.- Everything's spinning...- AMD always takesforever on the first boot..- First boot, yeah yeah.- Dude, is this gonna work?- It could be memory, but--- I still think the memoryconfiguration on thisright now is freaking it out a little bit.- Yeah.- But we got, there!- Hey, dude!- It takes 2 minutes forthe first boot, dude.- Yes, the Scrapinator lives!- Look at the temp!- 30-33, we've got Ryzen5 showing up, 1500X.It shows, well it onlyshows 8 gigs of RAM.- It shows dualchannel 2133 like you said.- But it only shows 8 gigs.- Oh, so it did freak out a little bit.- So one of the memory isn't being a,that's fine, who cares, whatever.- Who cares?- This works.- Dude, this.We redeemed ourselves. We did it.- That's the jankiest build ever.So yeah sure, this is notthe most practical build,it's not the prettiest build,it's not the most ghetto build, but man!- It is the sleeperiest build.- I'm so proud of this right now.So the Scrapinator lives. If you guys wanna check out the original$50 gaming PC challenge of howwe got this system in the first place, definitely be sure to check that out.You can also subscribe to Jay,he makes cool videos andhelps me Dremel sometimes.- I'm curious, what do you guys thinkabout the new Scrapinator?- Let us know in thecomments below and we or Ior someone will catch you in the next one.
