Show Off Sunday: A 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition
Hello and thank you to Scotty Kilmer for allowing me the opportunity to show off my 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the five-nine liter V8 engine. This particular vehicle is a rare find, with only 14,000 units made of this specific trim level. As it's now 21 years old, they're starting to become relatively rare. I'm extremely grateful that I had the chance to acquire this vehicle.
What sets this Grand Cherokee apart from any other from this era is the functional vented hood scoops, which were actually present in the 1998 model year. Who would have thought that Chrysler would include such a feature? And indeed, they did, and they work remarkably well. The clear lens headlights I added to give it an aggressive look are also noteworthy, as they certainly make the vehicle stand out from the standard stock grille.
Taking a closer look at the engine bay, you can see the five-nine liter V8 all its glory. As it happens, the EPA was trying to figure out how to clean up cars and make them more fuel-efficient and less polluting during this time period. However, they restricted big 360 motors like this one. I installed a K&N cold air intake, which Scotty Kilmer had a video about, and also a new Holley throttle body that adds two extra millimeters to the throttle body plenum. The result is a sound that's nothing short of mean, especially in an SUV.
Moving on to the driver's seat, you'll notice it's quite basic with a leather interior, nice leather steering wheel, leather headrest, and an all-black interior. The doors feature two memory seats and full control, which is pretty standard for this era. Additionally, they have these weird pockets that I'm not entirely sure what I'll use them for, but I might just put them to good use.
Now, let's talk about the quirks. One of the oddities you'll notice here is the leather back seat. It does have a bit of quirkiness with only one vent on each side and that's the only place where air seems to be coming from. This is not stock, as it had this weird nob that controlled your front, right, left, and rear fade. It was just plain weird, but I liked the challenge of fixing it.
I bought this vehicle from a guy in Texas for under ten thousand dollars, which is quite an impressive find considering how popular all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles are. When I purchased it, it needed some work, including new shocks, brakes, air filter, spark plugs, and plenty of other maintenance. Despite this, I've only been driving it about 10 minutes every day to work, and it's proven itself to be a solid axle car with front and rear capabilities that can't complain.
Now, let's put it into two-wheel drive mode to see what it can do. Nobody is in front of me, so I'll just go ahead and put it into two-wheel drive. I'm already at 60 miles per hour; this thing is quite impressive for a 1998 model year car.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enit's time for show-off Sunday whereeveryone has a chance to show off theirown car and here's this week's winner, hello and thank you scotty Kilmer forallowing me the opportunity to show offmy Jeepnow this Jeep is the Grand Cherokee withthe five nine liter v8 so it's theirfive nine limited trim, and there wasonly 14,000 made of these and sonowadays it's 2019 made in 98 it's 21years old, they are kind of starting tobecome rare, and I am really thankfulthat I had the opportunity to gettingthis vehicle, now what sets this GrandCherokee apart from any other GrandCherokee from this era is these ventedhood scoops which are actuallyfunctional from 98, who'da thoughtChrysler would have done this they didand they work, and other than these clearlens headlights that I put on, they had amore of aggressive grille than an youknow a regular stock would which wouldhave been like just chrome or colormatch this was a little buffed out, nowhere it is the engine bay, the five nineall its glory now you can tell right offthe bat, I installed a K&N cold airintake and scotty kilmer had a video onthat regarding that they were kind of ajoke, well in this kind of time periodthe EPA was trying to figure out how toclean up cars and make them more fuelefficient and also less polluting andreally restricted this big 360 motor andI put it on and I also put on a newHolley throttle body which adds two moremillimeters to the throttle body plenumit just singsnow I don't know what motor soundsmeaner than this, especially in a SUVprobably some other European car but for 1998this thing is mean, now here's the driver'sseat pretty basic interior and it hasleather interior, nice leather steeringwheel, leather headboard, nice allblack interior, now for the doors theyhave two memory seats and full controlpretty standard for the windows, windowlock doors and they have these weirdpockets, don't know what I'm gonna usethese for but I'm gonna use them maybefor maps who knows, now I got a littlebit of quirks back here nothing toocrazy thoughleather back seats, but I got a vent I gottwo vents on the floor and that's theonly vent that it's on one on each side, and that's only the air vent for theback seat, never expected to have ventsin the back seat for this era and alsowe've got cup holders that come out ofthe center console, heck I didn't knowthat even when I purchased this vehicleI didn't know that, a elbow rest andthat's where the cup holders should havewent, they also had speakers so this hadsix speakers in total like their mainspeakers, and they had a tweeter on theleft there, both left and right it'sfollowing these same kind of idea fromthe Cherokee and it followed intothe Grand Cherokee, they also had a sparetire on the right side here but I movedthat in the back, so we got a 16 inch rimoriginaly this vehicle had 28 inch tiresnow they have 30 inch tires, I plan to gowith a little more aggressive look afterit all said and done, I also have backhere I got a 3-inch liftsgot skyjackershocker I just did those this summer alsosee here the dana 30 can also see backhere that i also installed a quickrelease front sway bar, i don't have itin the rear I only have it the front, youcan tellmy Wilco off-road hitch gate, it put thespare tire in the back and i was i justwanted that just so i didn't have to putmy spare tire in the rear, got me alittle more space in the trunk but stuffin stock form the spare tire would be inthe trunk, so here is my rear axle now inboth this generation and also the secondgeneration they were cursed with thisstupid axle, also it had weaker shafts itwas it was just not a good axle i don'tknow why they did this, I'm planning todo an axis swap on this and putting aDetroit true track on this, making itmore of a capable off-roader, we also gota weird quirk here is that you got yourheater seats, so front left front rightyour rear window which is kind of weirdputting it right on the right on thedash here, then your overdrive off rightnext to your back window heater, whywould you do that, this is a stock headunit and what makes it special is thatit had this weird nob here, it controlledyour front your right left and rear fadeit was just weird, you felt like you'replaying a video game when you're messingaround with this, this is not stock nowwhat makes this special is that you canlock the transfer case and in the otherone you couldn't and it was just notreal great, when the viscous coupler goesthen it's time to pitch it, I went with adifferent transfer case and it'sprovided me with flawless performance, soI bought this vehicle from a guy inTexasand in Colorado all wheel drive and fourwheel drive vehicles are super popularand for something like this would go forover ten thousand dollars, and so when Ibought this vehicle I got itfor under that, and I was extremely happyof course it needed some work and needednew shocks, brakes, air filter, spark plugsall sorts of just vehicle maintenance, Ido ride this vehicle to work and I'monly driving it maybe ten minuteeveryday, right it's pretty nice for asolid axle car, front and rear can'tcomplain, so let's pop it into two wheeldrive, nobody's in front of me and goI'm already at 60 now that's darn impressivefor a1998 whoa, with its speed power4x4 capability there's a downside ofcourse, this thing in city gets at best11 miles to the gallon and on this highway16 miles to a gallon going 75, this is notan environmentally friendly car, prettycapable it's fun to driveand it can just take me places that arenormally a two-wheel drive can't, it's agreat vehicle if you just take good careof it and you'd know what the problemsare, if you don't know what the problemsareyou're gonna start spending a lot ofmoney going the mechanic and trying tofigure out, okay what what else needsfixing, because they're old vehicles Imean rubber bushings are gonna go out, seals are gonna go badand it's just stuff to expectfrom an old vehicle, again I want tothank Scotty Kilmer for giving me theopportunity to show off my Jeep, if youwant to hit me up you can always go tomy Instagram account which iscole harper 73,
