LG G1 4K OLED TV Review (OLED65G1) _ Gaming monster
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enin my 10 years of reviewing tvs i have to say this is the most complicated tv i've experienced but is that actually a good thing welcome back everyone i'm caleb dennison and today i'm reviewing the lg g1 gallery series oled evo got to have that evo part in there and when i say complicated i mean this tv has a lot going on probably one of the most feature-rich tvs i've ever seen so here's what i'm gonna do i'm gonna do a more traditional review of the tv where we touch on things like picture settings the user interface and how it's changed and of course picture quality you know broad strokes with a few highlights tossed in for fun and then i'm going to do a deeper dive video later where we look at some of the interesting quirks and the picture settings and why they are like that how to get the most out of the g1 what evo is how it works and why objective measurements aren't telling the whole story that kind of geeky stuff sound good awesome let's get into it before i get started though drop me a comment and let me know if you think mini led is gonna topple oled in performance this year or will oled remain king while you're down there please like and subscribe we're on our way to a million subs and i need your help and as always we have shopping links in the description if you'd like to support this channel that way you know i appreciate it okay let's go so i want to start out by giving you an update on picture settings when i did my unboxing video for this tv i started out with isf bright because isf presets are typically a great starting place and the picture looked good but when i got to measuring i realized the color temperature was a little cold a lot of blue in the white measurement so i dug in sure enough isf bright room mode is brighter and cooler in color temperature that's good for daylight viewing but not good as a baseline for measurements turns out though that's not the correct default setting but i didn't know that at the time so i shifted to isf dark and it measured better extremely well actually i also checked out cinema home and cinema user for hdr picture settings and noted that cinema home had a cooler color temp as well so i changed that to warm and bounced between the two and cinema home ended up brighter but why then there's dolby vision here again i checked out the difference between cinema home and cinema user by the way it only says user if you've made an adjustment right and the color temperature was the same but cinema home was brighter and also some motion smoothing is involved and you can't turn it off i'll dive into all this in the next video but for now i would just use cinema user for hdr and dolby vision modes i would make sure peak brightness is turned to high i would also suggest trying peak brightness on high for sdr if you're watching during the day and want a brighter picture with that out of the way how did the tv measure it actually measured very well the white balance was so spot on i didn't have to do a thing colors in sdr were again spot on and an sdr with the right settings i got a bit more than 400 nits for sdr that's not really accurate but helpful for daytime viewing and the brighter picture looks great for hdr i was able to get about 830 nits in cinema mode and around 860 in vivid mode both with a 10 window where the readings were their highest that's slightly higher than what i saw last year but to be honest not quite as high as i was expecting yet when i watch real content it is clearly pushing out brighter hdr highlights so what's the deal it goes back to this whole oled evo thing which is what lg uses to identify its new brighter oled tvs at its most basic i can tell you that evo is not just a panel change it has to do with both the new panel and some processing happening behind the scenes how the panel has changed and how evo works in general again is something i'm going to have to say for the deep dive but right now i can tell you this new oled tv is definitely punchier than we've seen for the past five years or so now let's chat about this new remote really quick i like the redesign it's more comfortable in my hand and there's a couple of little changes like we now have a little nfc spot here for tap to pair for some cool features that work with your phone also there are now dedicated buttons for google assistant and amazon's a person so having all that built in is great there's still a mic button up top though and that's for accessing lg's ai assistant for doing things like searching for content changing channels and adjusting volume actually lgai can do a lot more than it could before but i'm going to show you all this nifty stuff in the deep dive video a quick word on webos i've been using it for over a week now and for the most part i like it it's way easier on the eyes and i like that my inputs and home dashboard are just under the app list you can still arrange the apps the way you want or have the system arrange them for you based on frequency of use there's free content youtube apple tv all right here kind of reminds me of google tv in some ways but one disappointment is that there is no hbo max now i'm not gonna beat up lg over this i'm pretty sure it isn't here due to an exclusivity agreement with another tv manufacturer and hopefully that ends soon because i know lg will bring hbo max to web os as soon as it can but not having it now means the only way you're watching hbo max on this tv is to use airplay 2 and an ios device or buy another streaming device and i'd recommend a chromecast with google tv if you're going to go that route now a quick note on a few ai features lg has improved and implemented if you navigate to general and select ai service you'll notice this ai picture pro option this feature analyzes the content on a scene by scene basis and optimizes it i'll explain how in the next video but for now i can say give it a shot it worked really well for me especially in cleaning up some streaming content on youtube as for ai sound pro well let's talk about sound quality first off lg provides this ai acoustic tuning feature which i tried out you point your remote at the tv like you normally would it plays some sounds for about eight seconds then does some tuning and you can bounce back and forth between the before and after to decide if you like it in this room it worked well so i'm using it but try it for yourself and see if you do as well ai sound pro attempts to create a virtual dolby atmos 5.1.2 sound and i didn't care for it much that's because i don't tend to like virtual surround sound in general and especially in tvs but make your own choice sound on this tv without the virtual surround sound sounds very good though it's got a decent amount of bass dialogue clarity is solid and it offers some surprisingly good stereo separation frankly there are very few tvs that compete in the sound quality department so if you really can't do a sound bar or some other home theater system know the tv isn't going to let you down now finally picture quality i tested this tv with everything from cable and satellite all the way up to 4k blu-rays and with almost everything i watched it looked the best i've ever seen it now keep in mind i haven't gotten to the sony a90j or made any comparisons we will do that but there's no doubt this is one of the best looking tvs you can buy this year as for low resolution cable and broadcast tv the g1 here does as good a job as i've seen making that content look decent on a screen this large no processing can work miracles with this stuff but it looks decent standard hd content in sdr especially with the peak brightness boosted looked fantastic i used meat eater on netflix because of its natural vistas and also because i don't think they're using the fanciest cameras all the time and it still looked aces deep black saturated colors and a pristine cleanliness that i haven't seen in a long time 4k hdr as you would expect was even better i think the handling of highlights and highlight detail is superb and exciting and the contrast against the blacks is once again stunning i'm getting those oled vibes i've always loved but with more pizzazz colors are vibrant perhaps a little less accurate in hdr than str but barely visibly so and the images are just so clean even with streaming content the disney plus launch screen and marvel universe intro will show a lot of banding on lesser tvs and even with some of the processing set to low banding is virtually eliminated on the g1 now that processing can't work miracles on really trashy youtube content for instance but for the vast majority of what i watched the images were just again so pristine i mean i'm seriously impressed now i am right now at least running into some issues with dolby vision content let's take the opening fight sequence between the cree and the scroll on captain marvel here i'll pause and it may be tough to see on camera but there is very little detail to the characters faces same with several other dark dolby vision properties now i'm not prepared to call this a problem with this tv because i've seen it on other tvs as well including those that can get a lot brighter i'm not sure what's going on but it could be a dolby vision encoding thing and it needs more investigation so hopefully i can get that figured out good news is lots of other dolby vision titles look amazing otherwise as far as picture quality goes i think this is a big step forward for lg and oled tvs in general now for gaming from what i've experienced so far it is excellent no raised blacks with vrr exceptionally smooth gameplay very responsive screen no screen tearing no smearing or blur and it supports g-sync and freesync premium as well all in all an awesome companion to a next-gen console or gaming pc i think what i like most this year though is this game optimizer dashboard which lets you access a bunch of gaming related settings to make for the best experience there's even a genre optimization that optimizes picture quality for specific game types like we pick first person shooter and it'll lift the blacks just a touch to get more brightness in dark scenes there's a lot here i'm going to say for the next video but i'm curious if gamers are going to dig this kind of geekery like i do so when it comes down to it the g1 is a remarkable tv and i think it's going to be hard to touch this year if you want the best oled you can buy in 2021 the g1 must be on your short list thanks as always for watching everyone let me know in the comments which do you think is going to be the brighter tv this year the g1 or the a90j from sony let me know in the comments and another reminder to like subscribe and click that bell and while you're here here's two other videos i think you'll likein my 10 years of reviewing tvs i have to say this is the most complicated tv i've experienced but
