Doing TV Reviews Takes Time and Effort
Coordinating the shipping and arrival of these TVs takes time. I've got to go to the basement of this building with a hand truck and take multiple elevators every time a TV comes in or goes out. Then, there's the unboxing process for which we shoot video. This is always a challenge because you have to make sure everything is secure before you start filming. After that, there's the testing/slash evaluation process which involves taking measurements making adjustments watching lots of content playing games and just living with the TV. This is the part where I have to really put the TV through its paces to see what it can do.
There are also website component for all this that needs attention too so I'm running out of time and months in the year at this point. I don't just review TVs either sometimes I'm out on assignment covering the first 4k HDR Super Bowl broadcast or shooting custom video series I'm all over the place so this far along in the game I'm probably going to take a look at TVs like the TCL 5 Series or maybe the 4 Series less expensive TVs that offer decent performance but you need to know what you're giving up what you can expect out of the TV and what just isn't going to be there. Plus, to be honest a lot of folks buy these TVs and want to know if they're about to make a smart purchase so there's a sheer popularity in numbers aspect there.
Cheap TVs
However, I'm not going to review cheap TVs like the Insignia Fire TV or the lower tier LGs and Samsungs TVs that only cost a couple of hundred dollars. Why won't I review these TVs well because frankly they're all pretty much the same they don't get especially bright they don't really do HDR most of them don't have local dimming in fact most of them are edge lit there's nothing especially impressive about them and there's very little difference among them save maybe the kind of smart TV platform they run on. With so little to say there really isn't much value to a review there.
A Note on TVs
Now that isn't to say that these TVs don't have their place. I have a 24-inch Insignia Fire TV in my RV because who cares what the TV looks like when you're on the road or camping I mean I don't even care that much in fact one might question whether I should even be watching TV while camping really should get out into nature more anyway get one for your garage get one for your kitchen and hey if you don't want to spend insane money on a purpose-built outdoor TV that can literally stand up to whatever you throw at it just get a cheap TV that will last a few years and don't worry about it. Also, do your kids care about black levels or hate halo effect when they're watching Paw Patrol well if you train them right maybe but no your kids don't care get them a cheap TV if they even bother to watch something other than a tablet.
The Value of a Review
Cheap TVs have their place just not in my review program if I'm gonna spend a lot of time reviewing something I want it to be worth something both for myself and for you all watching out there. So, next time if you ask me in the comments if I'll review the U5000 FXZGAA or whatever the heck it is and I have to say no I hope you'll understand with that said if enough of you ask for a review I'm probably gonna try and make it happen after all you are the reason I'm here.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: eni'm going to review a lot of tvs this year in fact i'm going for a personal record i want to review more tvs in 2022 than i have in any of the previous what 11 years i've been at this game but there are some tvs i won't touch welcome back everyone i'm caleb denison and before you start rage commenting about how elitist i am let's first remember we're talking about tvs here okay i take them seriously but not that seriously but also this isn't about which tvs are worth my precious time and which tvs are just beneath me this is really a look at why i choose to review what i review what it takes to review a tv and why i really do think that while just about every price class of tv has its place not all of them need to be reviewed you know what i think it's going to be fun now before i dive into it let's just pretend for a moment that i was going to be the first to review the sony a95k and sony z9k tvs if that were to happen what are the top three things you'd want to know i'm here for you in the comments section like right now let me know while you're down there i think you might want to at the very least give that subscribe button a good slap maybe ring that bell while you're at it because if i were to be the first to publish a legit sony a95k or z9k review i think you'd enjoy being among the first to see it no thank you so much for your support a million subs now let's do this okay to get started let's talk about which tvs i must review i feel like it is most important to review the flagship tvs from five major manufacturers that would be samsung lg sony tcl and hisense i tend to focus on those brands because they have shown year after year to be at the top of their game now for those of you out there who are like dude what about panasonic i feel ya thing is panasonic isn't in the u.s market anymore and i can't get those tvs pulled in it's a bummer i know now that list can change once upon a time i felt like toshiba tvs were super important and tcl wasn't anywhere close to making the cut and well here we are now right there's a few reasons i target the flagships from those five brands one it's important to see what the best tvs look like from each manufacturer so we have a feel for where the bar is set for the year and from that we understand okay if you want this performance you're going to need to pay this price the other reason i like to look at the flagships is because if you are going to spend that much money i think you should know what you'll be getting and in some cases not getting for that kind of investment it's also with these flagship tvs where we look at the best examples of different technologies be it oled mini led micro led or this year qd oled usually only the top tvs get the newest text so we want to check those out to see where the industry is going from there i like to take as big of a dive in price as i can without sacrificing too much picture quality and that lends us firmly in the high value territory these are tvs like the tcl6 series and the hysense u7 where often the takeaway is something like 90 of the performance at half the price i feel like buyers do a lot of research in this category as well and they're just wildly popular tvs right of course they are anytime you can get unexpectedly great picture quality from a moderately priced tv i think folks are going to be super interested from there i'll start looking at tvs that fall somewhere between the flagships and the value leaders sometimes we find models in this bracket that bring something unique or meaningful sometimes folks want to know what do i get if i pay a bit more is it worth stepping up just one more model tier or should i stick with one of the high value models looking at these tvs let's use like the vizio p series as an example they can give us a feel for what the broader spectrum of tv offerings look like i feel like these tvs can offer some valuable perspective hey everyone i just want to take a second to thank our sponsor deeper network this is the pico and this tiny thing is a legit powerhouse of cyber security hardware it's both a seven layer enterprise grade firewall
