Hands-On With All the New Features in watchOS 5

Watch OS 5: Hands-On with Apple's Latest Watch Operating System

We're excited to dive into watch OS 5, the latest operating system from Apple that was announced at WWDC 2018. As we go hands-on with this new software, we'll explore all the exciting features and improvements that it brings to the table.

Two New Applications: Walkie-Talkie and Podcast

One of the first things we noticed about watch OS 5 is the introduction of two new applications: Walkie-Talkie and Podcast. With Walkie-Talkie, users can have a one-on-one push-to-talk conversation that's just like using a classic walkie-talkie. Instead of taking your phone out or opening up the phone app to find the person you want to call, you can simply tap the Walkie-Talkie complication on your watch face or open up the Walkie-Talkie app and quickly have that conversation. However, we note that this feature is not currently available in the beta, but we'll be covering it extensively once it launches.

Podcast App

The Podcast app has also received an upgrade with watch OS 5. This means you can now listen to all of your favorite podcasts on the go without needing your phone. You can even ask Siri to play a specific podcast, making it easier than ever to access your favorite shows. The Podcast app is integrated into the Watch face and will provide a seamless listening experience.

Workouts and Fitness Improvements

For users who enjoy working out, watch OS 5 brings some significant improvements. Automatic workout detection means that your Apple watch senses when you start exercising and alerts you to start the workout app if you forgot it. This feature also gives you credit for the exercise you've already done and reminds you to end your workout if you've forgotten to turn it off. Additionally, new workouts like yoga and hiking are available, along with pacing options that allow your Apple watch to tap you on the wrist to let you know if you're behind or ahead of your target pace.

Activity Competitions

The Activity app has also received a significant upgrade with watch OS 5. Users can now participate in activity competitions where they earn points based on the percentage of their activity rings that they close. This feature is designed to encourage users to be more active and move towards their fitness goals. The Activity app will even turn into a personal trainer, providing you with alerts and coaching suggestions throughout your competition.

Notification and Control Center Improvements

The Notification center has also received some exciting updates with watch OS 5. The most notable change is the introduction of group notifications, which were first introduced in iOS 12. With this feature, users can now view their notifications on their watch face without needing to open up the Notification app. You can also swipe down from the top of any application to see your notifications, making it easy to stay connected and aware of important updates.

Control Center Enhancements

Speaking of Control Centers, watch OS 5 has made some significant enhancements. The Control Center is now accessible from any application, not just the home screen. To access it, simply scroll down to the bottom and select the edit button. This allows you to quickly add or remove control center features as needed.

Siri Watch Face

The Siri Watch face has also been upgraded with watch OS 5. This feature provides a more interactive experience, offering info on sports maps and heartrate plus. You can even see third-party applications integrated into the watch face, making it a great way to stay connected without needing your phone.

Series Shortcuts from iPhone

Finally, we're excited to mention that watch OS 5 includes series shortcuts from the iPhone. This feature allows Siri to proactively make relevant shortcut suggestions throughout the day, making it easier than ever to access frequently used features and functions on your watch.

In conclusion, watch OS 5 is an exciting new operating system that brings a range of improvements and enhancements to the table. From the introduction of Walkie-Talkie and Podcast apps to significant upgrades in fitness tracking and notification management, there's something for everyone with this latest release from Apple.
