Glossy OLED Monitors are Here! - ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27AQDMG Review

The Asus VG278Q is a 27-inch monitor that has been put through a series of tests to determine its capabilities and features.

As I looked at this monitor, I was immediately impressed by how well it's calibrated both for color and for Grays. This is no surprise, as most OLED monitors are pretty standard when it comes to calibration. However, this one is really well done and I dare say it's better than what most other models offer. And as you can see here, the sRGB profile is great as well since this is an OLED panel. The pixels turn off completely when displaying black color, so it has perfect contrast.

Viewing angles are also excellent both horizontally and vertically. The backlight bleed isn't an issue on this type of a panel, which is a definite plus. While OLED doesn't guarantee perfect uniformity, most OLEDs perform well and so does this one. Because it's an OLED panel, it also has near instant response times with no significant overshoot. When you combine that with a 240Hz refresh rate, you basically get one of the best monitors when it comes to moving image clarity that you can buy right now.

However, there is one behavior of OLED panels that might be noticeable - brightness dips on every refresh cycle. This won't bother most users, but some people who are sensitive to flicker might find it uncomfortable to look at. Asus does mention their "RG exclusive anti-flicker technology" but this is actually aimed at reducing variable refresh rate flicker that's also inherent to all OLED panels.

Input lag seems low and very similar to previous OLEDs, so it's competitive enough and together with near instant response times, it's a great monitor for faster and esports-type games in general. In the EU, this monitor should cost you €800, and in the US, the price should be between $700 and $750, which is in line with current 27-inch 240Hz OLED panel prices.

Overall, I have to say that I really like this monitor. It's pretty hard to find a bad OLED, but this one is actually great in my opinion. It's well-built, the stand is sturdy, the OSD and factory calibration are one of the best I've seen in a long time, and the fact that we're finally getting this glossy option really makes it stand out a bit more.

The fact that it has all the usual upsides of an OLED panel like good color gamut, great response times, and great contrast is definitely something to be excited about. It's a monitor that does almost everything right, from fast-paced games to immersion-style games to other types of content consumption and even content creation. If you're going to use it for productivity, having a bit more screen real estate is definitely more desirable in my opinion.

However, there is one thing to consider - the risk of burning. This is always something to think about when using OLED panels. Asus does offer a three-year long warranty and specifically mentions burning, which is definitely an improvement.

Finally, I have to mention that the connections on this monitor are HDMI 2.0 only, without USB Type-C. While HDMI 2.1 would have been more desirable, it's still better than having no USB ports at all. Calling it the "world's first glossy OLED" might be a bit optimistic, but it is definitely the first one in this size, so if you're considering this monitor, I think it's worth checking out.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso right next to me I have a brand new gaming monitor from Asus the RG Stak OLED XG 27 AQ DMG it has a 27in Ola display with a 1440p resolution 240 HZ refresh rate and a proper glossy finish which is actually a very unique feature for gaming monitors I mean we've seen plenty of glossy OLED TVs over the years but most monitors always used some sort of an anti- glare or matte coating instead while this one is actually just proper glossy so let's check it out let's see how it performs and most importantly let's see if it's worth getting it or not let's begin Asus very often reuses their monitor designs and this one is not an exception it has a fairly flat base with the ergonomic stand and Matrix RGB logo that we've definitely seen before but this time around they added a little slot for your phone which is just a nice little extra and keep in mind I'm totally fine with using a similar design all the time because uh it is instantly recognizable and you don't really need to fix things that obviously work really well it has a great build quality uh it is height adjustable it rotates it swivels it has a very sturdy stand overall but if you prefer you can also vase amount it as well cable management is present but it is a bit basic if you compare it to what we've seen on some alien wear monitors for example that just hide the cables completely but this is still very much so okay in terms of connections you you get one display port 1.4 uh two HDMI 2.0 connections a headphone jack and a USB hub so it is a little bit on the cheap side I would say so HDMI 2.0 limits the HDMI signals to 144 Hertz instead of the full 240 hertz and I expect to see a type-c connection with power delivery since they are using this very big external brake to power the monitor but that feature is not present here speakers aren't included either but since anyone that is serious about console gaming would probably not go for a 1440p model like this one I don't really think that lacking speakers is a huge deal in this case and as expected from Asus their OSD is great It is Well laid out it is nicely reactive and fast and definitely easy to operate uh you have all kinds of gaming features as well as a 120 HZ black frame insertion or elmb feature and if you prefer you can use their software and control the OSD using your mouse and keyboard instead the panel of this monitor is flat which totally makes sense for a 27 in gaming Monitor and it is also passively cool so you don't have to worry about the noise and you don't have to worry about it breaking over time but the most unique thing is this glossy finish now Asus claims that this is the world's first glossy W OLED gaming monitor but keep in mind U most Ola TVs have been glossy for years and even gigabytes fo 4hu monitor which I'm still using today is glossy as well so for me a glossy olad is not really a new experience and if you've seen OLED TVs you already kind of know what to expect here a glossy finish is subjectively brighter it makes the colors pop up just a bit more and while everyone has their own preferences it is generally accepted that a glossy panel just looks a bit better uh or at least as long as it displaying something colorful because when you have a black or really dark images on it a glossy p pel can often reflect light sources and things in your room more clearly which can be a downside if you have a light or a window right behind you so a matte panel uh tends to look a bit more gray in these particular situations while a glossy panel just has these direct Reflections so I kind of sway a bit more towards the matte coating if you do game in these conditions but for most users and then especially so for those who play primarily at night a glossy panel is the way to go this monitor uses an lgw OLED panel underneath so the performance is mostly great as you would expect from these panels ASD R Peak brightness is 400 knits in a smaller window which is decent or 250 knits in a full screen white window which is also a pretty good result for an OLED panel in SDR mode but Asus is claiming 450 and 275 nits respectively so it is slightly under the spec that also means that the bright brightness does shift depending on what's on the screen by default but you do get a uniform brightness option that just logs the brightness on a lower level to prevent that shift from happening and the minimum brightness comes in at 29 nits HDR brightness however peaked at just over 800 nits which is again fine if not exceptional and as we've come to expect from Asus their HDR profiles work pretty well out of the box with the alien wear aw 3225 qf that I reviewed recently you really need to test it a bit to find the right setting for the ADR content to look right uh but with this one right here you just turn it on you enable HDR and you just start playing that's it in terms of color performance it has a nice white color gamut with proper srgb coverage and about 95% P3 coverage uh which is more than fine for regular content creation as well and the factory calibration is very good out of the box the default Prof file is perfectly calibrated both for color and for Grays and even though a good calibration is pretty standard for most OLED monitors this one is really well done and I dare to say it is better than what most other models offer and as you can see here the srgb profile is great as well since this is an OLED panel the pixels turn off completely when displaying black color so it has perfect contrast viewing angles uh we won't see much of a price premium for this r one so overall I have to say I really do like this monitor I mean it's pretty hard to find a bad OLED uh but this one is actually great in my opinion it is wellb built the stand is sturdy the OSD and the factory calibration are one of the if not the best I've seen in a long time and the fact that we're finally getting this glossy option really as well because the extra size and the extra pixels they offer are definitely nicer for more immersion style games for console use and nicer for Content consumption nicer for Content creation uh but they're also more expensive and they require a more powerful GPU so keep that in mind but if you prefer a 27in monitor with a 1440p resolution or you've been just wai waiting for that glossy glossy option I really don't think you can go wrong with this R right here now that's all I had for today but before I go let's check out the sponsor of this video this video was brought to you by sionic and
