Buying RETRO TECH from Japan!

I recently purchased a PlayStation (PSX) at an auction for about $100, which is a really cheap price considering it's supposed to be in working condition. I was excited to find it because I also have another PSX in the house.

I found the PSX at auction and it literally hopped an ocean to come here. Okay, so wow - I must say this is in really good condition. I mean, there are scratches on the top case here, it's made of clear acrylic plastic, so naturally these will get scuffed anyway. So, I guess there's nothing for it.

Let's get some power hooked up to a TV and fingers crossed that I got my money's worth here. This TV is so reflective - hello! How's it going? Alright, moment of truth - powered on! Ooh, it smells like an old Japanese home. No signal... Oh boy, got a nice blinking light over here. Things are spinning.

Except, uh, that video doesn't look good. A lot of it is scuffed. Alright, maybe we're partially working here. But let me do some more troubleshooting quickly. I couldn't find an S video cable, so I just brought another one for the other PlayStation TV Fu. Okay, I forgot this TV is British - it needs a different power connector.

We need to adapt the voltage into Freedom Units... oh wait, no! I'm dumb. I'm dumb. I'm dumb. There's a plug on the side of this TV - hey, we got some color! Hell yeah! Oh look at this - we got some TV recordings here! Ooh, someone did not format this before they sent it to me.

Can I guess what period this is from? When... when were these TV shows recorded? Here we go - we got a car in this shot. Okay, Billy Joel... that's a really cool look at what TV was like back in the day. Oh no... that really dates this video!

While I don't have a Japanese PS2 game to try out, I have a PlayStation One game - it's for NTS CJ, so it should work perfectly fine on our PSX if the drive is working properly. This inin it took it... we got it! We got a game! We got a game! Okay, was that just a loading screen? Success! We did it! We have a working PSX.

Got some basketball tips off, yeah! Two languages - I don't know Japanese and basketball... what is going on here? H, keep spamming buttons. Maybe something will happen. Okay, um the game works. The last thing that I would like to test out is a Japanese DVD - this is from Honeyworks actually, with a famous song that some people might know. Hopefully, this DVD should just work... y'all hear that! It made some kind of noise... uh, that didn't sound good.

What does that say? Dubbing footage from your hard disk to a DVD disc... oh no, no no no no no no no. Where's my DVD? I want to play my DVD. Yeah, our DVD video is not showing up... that is a shame. Although, we were able to play a PlayStation game on it, which is the most important part of why we even own this thing.

Anyway, it is in fact a PlayStation, so good job there! I'll take it as like a 90% win. Obviously, this video is not entirely about this device, but let me know if you want to see another video where we try to actually preserve the hardware... maybe back up the hard drive because those are the most volatile things about this console and are very hard to replace.

And we can also do some mods as well! And I'll actually put in some more care this time, not to break. But let me know if you want to see more content on the PSX - I'd love to do more overall! I'm really happy with the items we found on syo and the shipping process itself was really easy to use... granted, shipping stuff from Japan through Sendico can cost a pretty penny.

But the fact that there's a whole world of Japanese Tech available out there for your collection, and that the yen is super cheap right now makes it a better time than ever to give it a go. Honestly, it probably won't be the last time I'll be using this service on the channel... but let me know what you think about it in the comments below!
