Software Update Released by Apple: Cross-Platform Tracking Detection and New Features
On Monday, Apple released a software update that includes several new features, some of which are notable enough to warrant attention. One such feature is cross-platform tracking detection, a new system in iOS that notifies users about compatible Bluetooth trackers following their movements. This system was developed in collaboration with Google and has been adopted as an industry standard, allowing both iOS and Android devices to detect and alert users when a Bluetooth tracker they do not own is moving with them.
The implications of this feature are significant, particularly for individuals who have had their property stolen or are concerned about being stalked. The fact that the system can deliver notifications regardless of the operating system in use means that users can be alerted even if they switch from an iPhone to an Android device or vice versa. This added layer of security is a welcome feature, especially considering the existing capabilities of Apple's AirTags, which have long been used to track lost items.
Another notable feature of this software update is the addition of a new daily game called Cor tiles, which has been included in the coveted Apple News+. Cor tiles is essentially a word-based game that challenges players to make as many words as possible from a grid of letters. The game is reminiscent of Boggle, with one key difference: instead of being limited to individual letters, players must generate words using an entire row or column of letters.
Cor tiles has been rolled out alongside iOS 17 and includes other features such as crosswords and Mini Cross WS. The inclusion of these additional games in the Apple News+ lineup is a significant development, especially given the growing popularity of daily word games like Wordle and Connections. For those who enjoy word-based puzzles, Cor tiles promises to offer a fresh and challenging experience.
Interestingly, it appears that Cor tiles is not entirely new even for some users. The creator of the game mentioned in the transcription jokingly referred to their own superior intellect as the reason why they found the game "not hard at all." This aside aside suggests that while the game may be straightforward for those with a certain level of experience, it can still provide an enjoyable challenge for players who are new to word-based puzzles.
One final feature worth noting is The Daily Cor tiles, which has been integrated with Game Center. This allows users to track their progress and compete against others, providing a social aspect to the game that may appeal to those who enjoy the interactive nature of daily word games.
In terms of pricing, it appears that Cor tiles is included in the Apple News+ lineup, which can be accessed by users who subscribe to this service. For some, the value proposition of Apple News+ may be questionable, given the cost of a subscription ($12.99 per month) compared to the cost of individual games or word-based puzzles.
Regardless of one's opinion on pricing, it is clear that Cor tiles and other features in this software update are significant developments for Apple users. Whether you're interested in cross-platform tracking detection, daily word games, or simply enjoying new features from your device, there's something here to appreciate.
