DIY Waterproof Picnic Blanket

The Crafty Lumberjacks' Guide to Waterproofing Picnic Blankets

As the warm weather finally arrives, we can't help but get excited for one of our favorite activities: picnics! There's something special about spending time with friends and family in a beautiful outdoor setting, surrounded by nature. But let's face it, picnics can also be quite... messy. You know what we're talking about – the inevitable wetting of your pants through your jeans, ruining the whole day. Well, fear not, fellow picnic enthusiasts! The Crafty Lumberjacks are here to help you waterproof one of our old blankets, making it perfect for your next outdoor adventure.

We started by cutting a piece of vinyl to size using a yard cutters. It was a great starting point for our waterproof blanket project. Next, we added all the holes to one side of the blanket, and then changed out the attachments to start adding snaps. The heavy-duty snap pliers were perfect for punching through the vinyl, allowing us to attach both sides of the snaps with ease. As we worked, Dennis (that's me!) exclaimed over the looks of the little brass details that would soon be added to our blanket. "Look at that hole! Look at that look!" I said, chuckling to myself as I punched through another layer.

Now, let's talk about the process of adding snaps to your waterproof blanket. It may seem daunting, but trust us, it's a breeze once you get the hang of it. Simply punch holes in your vinyl using your heavy-duty snap pliers, and then attach the snaps according to the manufacturer's instructions. The key is to press really hard when attaching each snap, making sure they're secure and won't come loose over time. And that's exactly what we did – punched hole after hole, attaching snap after snap, until our blanket was transformed into a waterproof masterpiece.

But we didn't stop there! We also wanted to create a little carrying strap for our blanket, making it easier to transport on our next picnic adventure. So, we folded the blanket and wrapped some material around it to see how much material we needed. "I think just about that much," Dennis said, nodding in agreement as I measured out the amount of fabric required. We then doubled the measurement, cutting two straps to carry the blanket – one for the width, and another a little longer for the handle.

Once our straps were cut, we added snaps to each end, securing them tightly so they wouldn't come loose during transport. The strap was starting to fray, but that was easily fixed by taking a lighter to it. We simply applied some heat to seal the edges, making sure everything would stay in place. And finally, we punched through all three layers of the straps, connecting them together with our trusty snap pliers.

The end result is nothing short of amazing! Our waterproof picnic blanket is not only perfect for outdoor adventures, but also incredibly portable and easy to set up. We can easily take it apart if needed, or use it as a standalone blanket – the possibilities are endless. And let's be real, who doesn't love a cute little brass detail here and there? As we finished our project, Dennis exclaimed, "I feel like it's all about the details for sure!" And we couldn't agree more.

The Crafty Lumberjacks' waterproof picnic blanket is the perfect solution for any outdoor enthusiast. No longer will you worry about your clothes getting wet during a picnic – with this baby, you'll be dry and comfortable in no time. So go ahead, grab some friends, pack a basket, and get ready to enjoy the great outdoors in style!
