**A Closer Look at the Magic Vs**
As I hold this device, I'm reminded that while the hardware is final, the software is far from final. Despite this, I'll share my thoughts on what I've experienced so far.
**The Challenge of Foldables**
I have a problem with larger foldable devices - they have a lot of potential, but often struggle to find their place in the market. While it's possible to use them as phones or open them up into tablet mode, many times there's no point, and I'd rather just grab a laptop or another device that can get real work done.
**Key to Selling Foldables**
To successfully sell someone on a foldable device, it needs to offer not only additional functionality but also do so in a comfortable way. The device should feel like you're not sacrificing anything, and after extended use, your wrists shouldn't ache from holding the phone at an odd angle or your palms shouldn't be digging into the sides of the device.
**The Magic Vs Hardware**
I'm pleased to say that the hardware on the Magic Vs has been a win. I don't typically make videos like this, but I wanted to highlight the improvements made in foldable design. The hinge is massively simplified and feels better across the board. There's no gap in the phone, which means the foldable is even thinner.
**A Big Thank You**
I want to give huge props to HONOR for sponsoring this video and providing me with an early hands-on experience of the Magic Vs. Please be sure to check out their website at the link in the description.
**Let's Hear Your Thoughts!**
Now, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this old-school style of video that I might make more of in the future. Also, what do you think about the Magic Vs?
WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en- I am currently at home sickwhich means that you're gonnaget an old-school video todayon something which isdecidedly not old-school.This, my friends,is the HONOR Magic Vs, and of course, huge shoutout to HONOR fornot only sponsoring this video, but more importantly givingme a very early hands-onof this device. Now, if you know anything about me,you know that I am a bigfan of foldable deviceswhether they're smallphones that get even smalleror large phones that get even bigger. There is a huge incentive, in my opinion,to try something like a foldablebecause it does give youso much more potentialwith the device that you carryaround with you every day. Now, if you live in theUS, there is exactlyone main brand who areselling the vast majorityof foldable devices. And let me be very clear, they've been doing a decent job. However, the problem isthere's really not been a lotof competition, which meansthat while things are improving, the better the competition is,I think it always pushesan industry forward. And seeing what HONOR have donewith the Magic Vs gives me a lot of hopefor what we can expectto see going forward. Not only do we have some real innovationswith this hinge techbut we also have someincredibly nice design.Like I'm telling you, thisfeels absolutely terrific. Not even just the ID and thesort of the rounded edgesand the symmetrical design, like that all as importantbut the thing to me that is themost important when it comesto a larger format foldable displayis the weight and the feel in the hand.If something is going to be very large, very chunky and very heavy,I'm not going to carry it.I always like the smallest, the lightest weight, the easiest to carry. And importantly, I don't wantsomething that's gonna be hugeand uncomfortable as I'm sortof typing on it all day long. And the Magic Vs is significantly lighter,it's significantlythinner, and importantly, with that whole symmetrical design,it's very comfortable to hold in the hand. You've also gotta make sure they can openand close hundreds of thousandsof times without giving out. This one is rated for 400,000 folds, but on top of that, youalso just need to thinkabout the thickness and the weight. Now, because this hinge iscomprised of only four pieces, yes, you heard me right, four pieces.Actually an individually cast piecewhich is the primary part of the hinge. It is first of all, lighterweight, which is important. It is also much thinner, but importantly, instead of having to use the gearsand the very complicated mechanismsthat a traditional foldable would need,it also means that you getan incredibly flat fold. So, you're not getting thatextra bulge on the outsidewhich pretty much all other foldables haveand that has some major advantages. You can literally put a pieceof paper in between the foldof the Magic Vs and itwill stay nice and tight.I guarantee you, no otherfoldable that I've ever triedcomes even close to that. What's also impressiveabout the hinge is that eventhough it is so simple andit has so many features, you still also do have theability to use the phonein a folded configuration, which for me, is a huge winbecause not only can you usethis as an impromptu tripodor something, but alsoif you're sitting in bedwatching a video and you just set it downand the phone will stand up by itself, which I think is really nice.If it didn't have that, I'd be sad.'Cause honestly, that'sone of my favorite partsof a foldable deviceis that you kind of have your sort ofa little built-in tripod. Now, when holding the phone like this,it looks like a standard smartphone, and that's for good reason.Unlike some other foldableswhich have sort of very tall, skinny displays, this is a 21:9 display. You've got yourself a90% screen-to-body ratio,1200 nits of brightness,120 hertz refresh rate.I mean it's pretty muchexactly what you expecton a very high-end phone, except that you can open it upand then you get access tothe entire inner display. Now, this is where you'regetting a 7.9 inch foldablewhich is going to be running at 90 hertz. And of course, this iswhat's going to give youthat tablet-like experience. Now, outside of that, the specs are, of course, what you would expect with somethingwhich is a high-end flagship like this, get yourself the QualcommSnapdragon 8+ Gen 1.And on top of that youalso have a trio of camerasaround the back. You got yourself a 54megapixel main camera. You also have a 50 megapixelultra-wide and macro camera. And on top of that you do havea 3x 8 megapixel telephoto. There's also a 16 megapixelfront-facing camera, both on the external displayas well as on the internal display, which I think is alegitimately useful thing. You never know which postureyou're going be using the device in,and that's really nice. Can I just mention for a second, folded this phone is only12.9 millimeters thick, which is hardly that much thickerthan a traditional flagship. And on top of that, they're able to fita 5,000 milliampere-hourbattery inside of the HONOR Vs.Now specifically, whenit comes to this device,I've got a very early sampleso this is the, essentially,a final hardware. However, the software is far from final,so I'm not gonna be ableto talk about that too muchalthough this will belaunching in global marketsin Q1 where I'll hopefullybe able to take a little bitof a closer look. The thing that I have aproblem with sometimeswith some of the larger foldable devicesis that they have a lot of potential.Like there's a lot of thingsyou could do with thembut, for me, they often kind of runinto this sort of gray areawhere, yes, I could do thison my phone slash open it upinto tablet mode but then a lot of timesI feel like there's no point.Like I would rather just grab a laptopor something else that gets, quote unquote, real work done. And I think that is akey to selling someoneon a foldable device. It's gotta give you, not onlyadditional functionality, but also it needs to dothat in a comfortable waywhere you don't feellike you're sacrificing. You don't feel likeafter you've been textingfor 45 minutes, yourwrists are ready to give upbecause you've been holding'em at a weird angleor your palms are digginginto the side of the device. And that, I think, is where thehardware, at the very least, has absolutely been awin with the Magic Vs.I don't typically do videos like this, and obviously, if I was notsick, I would be in the studiohaving a great time joking and laughingand all that kinda stuff, like we normally do.But this felt like agood opportunity for meto kinda make a little bitmore of an old-school video. Not only because I'vegot this phone early,I've got it a few daysearly, I've gotta make surethis video goes live in time. But also foldables, to me, are somethingthat it's a really importantkind of part of phones.Like to me, foldables arewhere the most interestingphones are right now.And as someone who's been usinga foldable phone every dayfor over three years now,I really care about this stuff, right? It's not something that necessarily seemssuper interesting to everyone.A lot of people will be like, oh,the durability this or that,or whatever the case is.But believe me when I say that foldableshave come a long wayover the last few years.Yes, there were someexamples of a certain phonethat was spectacularly notwell designed at the beginning, but things have come a long way.And while, yes, there'sstill growing pains, yes, there's still thingsthat need to be worked out.And yes, there's still arecompromises when it comesto a device such as the Magic Vs.I mean, yes, it is an incrediblythin and lightweight devicebut also it is still goingto be a little bit thickerand a little bit heavierthan a traditional smartphone, right? But when you consider the trade-offs,when you consider whatyou're getting with this, where you get not onlythe external display, but also, importantly, you've got that massive7.9 inch inner display, that, I think, is where thingsbecome a lot more interestingwhen it comes to evaluatingfoldable devices.Looking at this hardwaregives me a lot of hopebecause what we need in the foldable spaceright now, is competition. We need multiple companiesall trying their bestto innovate, to improve, and to push the entire space forward. When it's only one companywho's getting all the sales, they can kind of do whatever they want. But seeing things like this hingewhich is massively simplifiedand as far as I can tell, simplify without really any downside,it's thinner, it's lighter,it feels like it's betteracross the board. And importantly, there'sno gap in the phonewhich means that the foldable, which is already thinner by itself,is even thinner becauseyou don't have to dealwith that little wedge on the end.I've gotta give huge propsto HONOR, and of course,I've gotta give them a huge thank youfor not only sponsoring this videobut, importantly, givingme an early hands-onof the Magic Vs.Definitely be sure to go check it out,at the link in the description. And let me know, notonly what do you thinkabout this old-school style of videothat I would maybe makemore of in the futurebut on top of that, let me know what youthink about the Magic Vs.Now, if you excuse me,I'm going to go not useany of the non-final softwareI would never ever dothat or anything, but, um,you won't tell if I don't tell, right?
