The Art of Making Sloppy Joes: A Recipe to Die For
I just love sloppy joes and I basically grew up on them, but the problem was they always came from ingredients in a pouch or a can and I just hated that. So, I decided to make up my own and do it my way, and they came out absolutely delicious. In this article, we will go through the steps of making these mouth-watering sloppy joes.
To start with, we need to add about a tablespoon of oil to the bottom of a pan over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, we will add half a chopped onion. Now, I'm using white onions but you can use yellow or red onions; however, I opted for green bell pepper instead of red because it's the traditional route. We'll just stir and fry these until the onion becomes translucent and the bell pepper is soft.
As the cooking begins, the aroma of onion fills the air, which I find invigorating. It's like cooking has started! Now that the onions are cooked, we can proceed to add about a pound of 80/20 ground beef to the pan. We'll use our handy dandy spoon and break it down a little bit to create a uniform texture. Then, we will stir and fry this mixture for about four minutes until it reaches the pinkish side.
To prevent those nasty garlic bits from getting into our sloppy joes, we will add three cloves of fresh chopped garlic to the pan. We'll stir and sauté this until the wonderful smell of garlic fills the air. As I mentioned earlier, there's nothing quite like that aroma! Now, let's proceed with adding two or three tablespoons of tomato paste because if we want our sauce to have a little bit of body, this is my all-time secret.
I must admit, I've never seen this done in sloppy joes before, but it makes all the difference. We will also add two tablespoons of Old West Hickory Barbecue Sauce, which I find makes everything so good. Let's give everything a stir around to combine these flavors beautifully. Now that we have our sauce base, let's move on to adding some additional ingredients.
First, we'll add a tablespoon of brown sugar; however, you can use less if you prefer. A couple of tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce will provide that tardy tanginess I love so much. Next, we'll add half a cup of ketchup using French's brand but feel free to use whatever brand you like. We also have the option to add a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, which is absolutely optional but adds a nice flavor.
We'll then sprinkle about a teaspoon of salt and another teaspoon or two of fresh ground black pepper over our sloppy joes. Feel free to adjust the amount to your liking; however, I prefer a bit more heat, so I'll add half a teaspoon of pepper flakes. Finally, we'll finish off with half a cup of beef broth to create that perfect texture.
Now that all the ingredients are combined, let's give everything a stir and kind of flip-flop until those flavors blend together beautifully. Once we've reached that point, we can bring this mixture to a boil and let it simmer away until you get that perfect sloppy joe texture - whether it be really sloppy, not so sloppy, or somewhere in between.
Now that our sloppy joes are cooked, it's time to assemble the sandwich. We'll throw some buns on a grill (not just any bun, but a chapata roll) and give them a bit of soft melted butter onto a plate. Then, we'll spoon a heaping whack of that ever-so-delicious sloppy joe mixture over the top. And let me tell you; this is when it all comes together.
When you take a bite into this sloppy joe sandwich, you get that perfect balance of seasoning and flavor from the hickory sauce, as well as the tanginess from the Worcestershire sauce. The texture is just right - not too sloppy or not too firm. It's like a symphony of flavors in your mouth! I truly believe this recipe makes the best sloppy joes I've ever had, so if you're looking for something new to try, look no further.
