**A Hauntingly Beautiful Book: "A Monster Calls" by Patrick Ness**
For me, one of the most significant reasons I was hesitant to read "A Monster Calls" by Patrick Ness is the cover. It looks very creepy, and I initially thought it might be a horror book. However, nothing could be further from the truth. The story is actually about telling your truths, coming to terms with grief, and embracing change. The cover may seem scary at first glance, but trust me when I say that it's not what you'd expect from this beautifully written book.
**A Book About Grief and Healing**
I also had reservations about reading a book that deals with sickness and cancer. As someone who has experienced the pain of watching a loved one go through treatment, I was worried that the book might be too emotional or triggering for me. However, Ness handles these themes with sensitivity and care, making the story accessible to readers who may not have gone through similar experiences. The author's own experiences with grief and loss are evident throughout the book, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative.
**A Powerful Portrayal of Grief**
When I finally started reading "A Monster Calls," I was struck by how it differs from my own experience of watching a loved one go through cancer treatment. Connor, the protagonist, is 13 years old, and his mother is diagnosed with cancer. This forced me to re-examine my own emotions and reactions during that difficult time. The author skillfully captures the complexity of grief, highlighting themes such as anger, bitterness, and acceptance. I found myself drawn into Connor's world, feeling his pain and frustration as he struggled to cope with his mother's illness.
**The Power of Art in Storytelling**
One aspect of "A Monster Calls" that truly sets it apart is the inclusion of drawings throughout the book. Ness has woven these illustrations seamlessly into the narrative, creating a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere that complements the story perfectly. The artwork adds an extra layer of depth and emotion to the story, making it even more impactful for readers.
**A Beautiful and Emotional Read**
In short, "A Monster Calls" is a beautifully written book that will touch your heart and soul. It's not a horror book, despite its ominous cover; instead, it's a poignant exploration of grief, healing, and self-discovery. Ness's writing is evocative and powerful, creating a story that will stay with you long after you finish reading the book.
**A Must-Read for Anyone Who Has Experienced Loss**
If you've ever lost someone close to you or are currently navigating a difficult time, I highly recommend "A Monster Calls." This book offers a unique perspective on grief and healing, one that is both authentic and relatable. The story will likely make you cry, but it's also an incredibly beautiful and powerful read that will leave you feeling moved and inspired.
**Overall Impression**
I give "A Monster Calls" 5 out of 5 stars without hesitation. It's a quick read, but one that is both impactful and memorable. The author's writing is masterful, and the inclusion of illustrations adds an extra layer of depth to the narrative. I'm so glad I finally read this book; it was a sad revisiting of feelings from my own childhood, but also a wonderful reminder of the power of storytelling to heal and connect us.

children's novel and a why novel it's kind of mixture of both I would say it's definitely a very very short book in total this book is only 205 pages and that is pictures included so really this is a very very fast paced book I've read this in one sitting which let me tell you it never happens for me so trust me if you just set a couple hours side you will finish this book no problem it is a quick read and it is a book that will break your heart it is a very beautifully told book and it has such a very strong and beautiful message but by the end you will be crying and that's a lot for me to say again because I don't cry with a lot of books it takes a lot for me to cry love reading watching things I cried the drop of a hat reading in sintra story this book at the end it still left me in tears and I just was amazed by it I'm going to read the back of the book because I like the way it's worded I think you'll get a clearer picture of what this books about like I said it's worded beautifully this is it said that the monster showed up after midnight as they do but it isn't the monster Connors been expecting the one from his nightmares he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments the one was a darkness and the wind and the screaming this monster is something different something ancient something wild and it wants the truth so basically that is what this books about basically every night at the same time of a monster without that Connors and Connors bedroom and he wants the truth room Connor so throughout this whole book the monster says I will tell I will tell you these three tales and the fourth tell you will tell and it will be the truth and that is this whole notion about the whole book is this true that has been building up for so long in Connor in the monster once ish and it is such a beautiful book like I said I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did I've heard so many amazing things about this book because it's been out for a while and not venom book - for us I've heard a lot of things about it I've never picked it up because number one the cover it looks very very creepy do not be scared of the cover the cover reads like the cover looks like a horror book it's not a horror book at all children /y a book and it's basically about telling your truths coming to do filling with grief and you know letting things go and embracing things and it just has a very strong message so the cover is really it is what's inside the book because it is literally a monster calling but it is not scary at all do not be scared by that just so you're for war I think another reason why I was very hesitant to read it because I don't read I don't like to read a lot of books talking about sickness and cancer and things like that and that's not to spoil anything free because it says on the back that his mom's going through treatments because I have a very personal experience of that when I was young when I was 14 my brother who was 11 at the time he was diagnosed with liver cancer and just before warnky is totally okay not been in remission for a very long time he is healthy as an ox he's totally okay but that really did a number on me and my family as it would and to go through that to watch him go through that it affected me a lot personally so try honestly to steer clear of folks with cancer because it just does a number on me like emotionally like it's very hard for me to revisit that and it's just a tough time that I'm sure anyone that has been through that or has had someone very very close to them go through that can attest to that as well so that isn't all the reason why I was putting this off but I'm so glad to not be kids it was a sad revisiting the feelings I've had when I was very young it's been a long time like I said but it was still such a good thing to do because it's it's different how one deals with grief I'm reading about Connor who is 13 in this book and seeing his mother go through it and it affected me in a completely different way than was expecting like I said my brother went through this but reading this I am the mom now to a saw and have a son so while reading this I was constantly thinking you should bomb on the up she feels about how she's probably not gonna live and not see her son and that also did a really big number on me because it's your mom you will understand the feelings with that it was a very much an emotional train wreck reading this but lady Connor was I think it represented greatly to how he's doing with things he was angry he was very bitter about things he didn't want to accept things I think that was a very very very natural response when it comes to something like that so the way Patrick Ness told it was very very beautiful and imagery that wisss like they said there are drawings in this of the monster and I would highly recommend by you this version of the book because of all the drawings that has in it it is very beautiful very vivid very haunting but this book is beautiful I don't want to talk any more about it I feel like I've been talking a while about it but just know that it is a book that will speak to you it will it is a book that will make you feel all things it is a book that will probably make you cry but it is a beautiful book and it is a story that needs to be read especially if you have dealt with something like this and if you know some it's done with this and even if you haven't dealt with something like this I think it tells it beautifully and it portrays it greatly and just everything I thought it was amazing and I have not yet seen the movie of this I've heard amazing things about it how is an amazing book to movie adaptation plan to see it soon so if you guys want a separate movie review please let me know as well but overall I give this book a 5 out of 5 and it's very quick read but it is a very impactful read and those reads stick with you and this one will definitely stick with me all
