I've been waiting for Infinity to have its comeback moment, and we could finally be entering the beginning of it. This happens to a handful of automakers – there's a period where the products rolling out don't quite cut it; the designs might be off, power trains could be lacking, and performance just isn't there. Remember when Acura went full beak? They've rebounded nicely and can do so thanks to what happens first at Honda with Infinity. You need Nissan to begin giving us better vehicles, and they are doing so now – it's Infiniti's turn to turn it around.
Before Infiniti went the way of badging everything with a Q, its vehicles had a shared DNA paired with their own unique identities and fan bases. The FX was a tremendous sporty crossover, while the G was a fancier ZC car that made fun noise and had solid performance. Even the M sedan was a great cruiser with its own standout styling.
Now though, the Infinity lineup is muddy and confusing – the naming scheme won't get better anytime soon, but it appears that the products will and that's far more important. Infiniti is showing off four new models that will highlight improved products in both the short term and the long term right off the bat. We now have our first look at the Next Generation QX80, which is the full-size flagship SUV of the brand.
It looks rather sharp thanks to the styling cues pulled from the good-looking QX monograph concept – it resembles a Japanese take on the current Escalade and that's meant as a compliment because both vehicles look great. Following behind that Infinity is going to bring back a vehicle in the same spirit as the original FX. The first version we'll see is going to be called the qx65 concept, which is a mid-size crossover Coupe – this makes sense for buyers who love that body style.
I just hope it brings good looks and better performance, and could serve as a potential BMW X4 competitor positioned at a more intriguing price point. As Infiniti also wants to Electrify its entire lineup by the year 2030, the automaker is discussing two new electric options set to join the family. One will be previewed by a concept called The Vision qxe – it's set to blend the latest Infinity design language and top of crossover shape for an all-electric offering.
More interesting however, at least to me, is the just-revealed Vision QE concept – this is our first preview of Infiniti's first all-electric sedan. It's a slick Fastback model with unique lighting elements including what Infiniti calls piano key lighting front and rear. This is a dramatic effect, similar to the paint colors used on the concept, Infinity is tying the visual identity of the car to its shadow blue paint that has lots of gold highlights baked into it – it's a cool exterior effect that I hope makes it to production.
I don't think we need the full basking shark treatment found in the face but every other angle of this thing looks pretty fantastic. Infiniti is working hard to evolve its styling, and can utilize the recently improved Nissan products as underpinning starting points to also improve the Infinity experience. Hopefully, there's some Infinity-only powertrains being devised as well to keep proper distance between the brands at the same time.
Cadillac got its mojo back, Acura is building great cars right now – and I truly believe Infiniti can follow suit. Hopefully, these Vision Concepts translate well to reality.
