Serious Gaming Laptop for $800 - Dell Inspiron Gaming 15 2017

The Dell Inspiron Gaming Laptop Review: A Great Value for Gamers and Students Alike

The Dell Inspiron Gaming laptop is an impressive device that packs a punch when it comes to performance, cooling, and portability. Its strong cooling system during our ID to 64 stress test allowed the CPU to stay at a relatively comfortable 80°, even with turbo boost enabled, ensuring performance won't dip after a couple of minutes of gaming. While not silent, the laptop's fan noise was not disruptive, and it's much quieter than thin and light gaming machines like the Razor Blade.

The laptop's speakers are also worth noting, providing better sound quality than expected, especially considering their compact design. The internal subwoofer may not add as much depth to the sound as its XPS predecessors did, but overall, Clarity is good until some distortion creeps in at nearly full volume. This limitation can be mitigated by sitting closer to the speakers or using headphones.

Battery life was an impressive 6 hours and 48 minutes, one of the best results we've ever seen in our PC Mark workbench tests. This is a great feature for students who need to use their laptop throughout the day without having to recharge frequently. The laptop's ease of disassembly is also noteworthy – it only requires one screw to open up, making it an excellent choice for those who want to upgrade or repair their device.

The keyboard and trackpad are also worth mentioning. The keystrokes are short with a pleasant click, and the spacing is strong. There's also a full numpad with appropriately laid out arrow keys, which can be a welcome feature for students who need to type long documents or codes. While the backlit red keys may not be bright enough to light up an entire dance party, they're functional and readable in low-light conditions.

However, there are some compromises that come with buying a value model like this. The first unfortunate compromise is the lack of 1Gb Wi-Fi, resulting in a maximum speed of around 20 megabytes per second during our data transfer test. This means that fast downloads will have to be done via wired connections. Additionally, the storage is slow, running at SATA speeds rather than PCI-e speeds due to its M.2 SSD design.

Finally, the screen's color accuracy and contrast are not as high as we've seen in other laptops, even those with IPS panels. This can make it less suitable for graphic design or gaming applications that require precise color reproduction.

Overall, the Dell Inspiron Gaming laptop is an excellent value for gamers and students who need a portable device without breaking the bank. While it may not be as powerful as some high-end desktops, its portability and ease of use make it an attractive option for those who want to balance gaming and productivity without sacrificing too much performance.
