Revolutionizing the Porsche 911 - Inside the World of Lab Eleven _ Jay Leno's Garage
The Joy of Driving: A Conversation with Lab 11
It feels very nice yeah yeah we didn't set it up too hard it has um KW 4 lightweight suspension feels right tight it's a lot of fun to drive yeah feel free to step on it another m a lightweight car you know absolutely por always the right size for a sports car to be not too big yeah and it has this open air feel yeah constricted when you look in the back you feel like it's ready to handle the road.
We're currently sitting in a beautiful Porsche 993 that Lab 11, an Italian company, has customized. The owner of the car is thrilled with the modifications, which include a lightweight suspension and a high-performance engine. "It feels right planted very firm," he says, "you got tires was so much better than whatever they had back in the day." He's clearly passionate about driving, and Lab 11's attention to detail has made this Porsche a joy to drive.
Lab 11 was founded by Pino L. R. Roa, an Italian car enthusiast who grew up surrounded by Porsches. As a kid, he visited his aunt in southern Germany, where he developed a love for the brand. "I refused to drink anything out of a glass that didn't have I had a special glass with a uh green Porsche on it," he recalls. This experience instilled in him a lifelong passion for Porsches.
The company's history is closely tied to its founder's love of Porsches. Roa first visited the Frankfurt IAA show, where he saw the first 930 Turbo. He snuck into the car and convinced his brother that he deserved to sit in it. From then on, he was hooked on Porsches. Lab 11 was born out of this enthusiasm, with a focus on creating high-performance, lightweight cars that capture the essence of Porsche's design.
For Roa, the key to success lies in understanding what makes a car truly special. "I always had I don't know I always loved those cars yeah yeah when I was a kid um I visited my my aunt she's now 97 I refused to drink anything out of a glass that didn't have I had a special glass with a uh green Porsche on it and I wouldn't drink anything," he explains. This attention to detail is reflected in Lab 11's work, where every car is tailored to meet the owner's needs.
Lab 11's approach is centered around the idea that Porsches should be driven, not just displayed. "For around town you could be a little noisier but on a trip that's exactly right it's droning in your head," Roa says. This emphasis on driving performance means that every car is optimized for speed and agility.
One of the most impressive aspects of Lab 11's work is its attention to detail. The company has perfected the art of modifying Porsches without compromising their original character. "It just about as far as you want to go with a street car and still have a car you know exactly my favorite thing about it," Roa explains.
For Lab 11, there's no substitute for performance and style. They offer a range of customization options, from engine upgrades to suspension modifications. Each car is hand-built by skilled technicians who understand the intricacies of Porsche's design. "They let the tunos yeah on in and help them out even CU it keeps these air cool cars on the road for decades longer," Roa says.
Porsche has a unique approach to performance that sets it apart from other manufacturers. Lab 11 is at the forefront of this movement, creating cars that are both beautiful and powerful. "I think it's a wonderful thing yeah they let the tunos yeah on in and help them out even CU it keeps these air cool cars on the road for decades longer," Roa says.
In conclusion, Lab 11 is a company that truly understands what makes a car special. Their attention to detail, passion for performance, and commitment to Porsche's design philosophy make them one of the most respected customization shops in the industry. Whether you're a Porsche enthusiast or simply looking for a high-performance ride, Lab 11 has something to offer.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enmy favorite thing about 9/11 is as opposed to a lot of other classic cars people brag about how many miles they have on it you know some people go I've had this 30 years it's got 12200 mil well what fun is that exactly you know I mean yeah it doesn't make any sense 40 m a year yeah where is this I mean Porsche guys all the time Porsche Corvette guys 100 Grand 125,000 no issues welcome to the episode of Jay Leno's Garage fascinating automobile today this is a lab 11 911r you know the great thing about Porsches are they're all valuable but they're not rare so there's enough of them to people to do whatever they want You' seen what singer has done and other manufacturers this is a new one this is the only one here in America it's done uh they're built in Italy uh but it's a well let me bring in Axel well Axel come on in you're the the guy here in America for these cars we start with what a 993 this is actually a 95 model OKAY 94 production um the reason we started with a 993 is because it's like the latest greatest air cool it has the multi-link rear suspension kinematic Towing in it's just a little little bit more than the previous models or the 964 and so we decided we want to start out with a 993 because that was the the best driving one and you go through the entire car correct car gets completely disassembled uh media blasted then we'll go through the gaps you know make sure everything works we put uh all original Porsche fenders on to start out with then it gets 930 Turbo flares and then the wheel opening molding the wheel opening gets redone so it resembles a little more than nine the so you use all original Porsche Parts 90% por original Porsche Parts i' say I mean no carbon fiber or any of that no all metal is there a reason for that what would that be well I mean we just wanted to be able to have the vehicle serviced at any Porsche dealer in the world if you need any parts or anything you don't have to go through any special order things you just order it through Porsche classic like this particular vehicle has aluminum Hood the 911r deit on the engine right but it's all available at Porsche okay you're in Germany built but these are built in Italy is that correct they are built in Italy at in Milan right and the interior is done by medich which also also makes Interiors for Pagani well the reason they asked if you were based in Germany uh you know Americans are sort of fascinated by how strict German automotive rules are you know if you have even the non-original manufacturer tires on your car the cops pull you over and you get written up how can you totally modify an automobile and still pass there do you do you have to take it to be inspected is that how it works very diligently you have to every modification on the vehicle has to be inspected by the TUV and they have to ultimately sign off on it if they don't like it it will not pass you will not be able to register and TUV is like Department of Motor Vehicles this uh no the Department of Motor Vehicle mandates you to have your car inspected by TUV okay which is like a a technical oversight Right company okay and as a matter of fact you have to go every so often to reinspect your vehicle you cannot just put a car on the on the road and then drive it forever you have to have it inspected in order to get your registration yeah I mean here you see cars on fire going down the road and nobody P them over but in Germany yeah most of the stuff or a lot of the stuff you see here you would get instantly arrested if you drive on your Autobot well you know one time I've told the story about I had a German TV crew here and they were looking through oh wonderful car and I show them the fire engine I go well how can you have a fire engine you cannot drive it on the oh no you can this not possible get in get in so I put him in right we're going down the road when might hit the siren Beed you cannot blow the siren stop stop I mean the guy was just going crazy like the cops are going to Des I said this is California you can do whatever you want and the sirens blaring and people are getting out of the way and and they're just freaking out it was like the funniest thing ever so that yeah the bureaucrat is a is is is a is a thing to but you can also Drive 200 mph on a public road if you want so yes that's why they have it so how do we come up the name lab 11 what does that mean oh well because it it uh you know we figured it's kind of like a laboratory approach you know everything has to be disassembled in a clean room so we thought it might be fitting so it's kind of like the movie spinal tab remember they turn the amp up to 10 and their go up to 11 go one more oh scale of 10 and the factory kind of condones this do they yes they have no issues we take uh every vehicle that's finished goes to Porsche we have a certificate of authenticity and Porsche will do an inspection and stamped the book and set it back at zero miles or or delivery miles right and we start fresh well that's interesting I don't know any other a manufacturer that allows anybody to do that yeah it took a little doing yeah yeah I bet you it Dido L Roa the own of lab 11 he has uh lots of lots of connections and he was actually originally uh assembling and curating the Ferrero collection you know from the the chocolate manufacturers okay yeah and uh so he built a very good relationship with Porsche Lamborghini Pagani Ferrari oh okay now as you said this has the fuks wheels has the Porsche brakes what is the engine the original engine just modified or what this is a original engine 3.8 L with RX cams uh lightweight clutch single Mass flywheel there are several options we start with the uh the original 3.6 with modifications to the ECU and the cam it's kind of the base model then we have the 3.8 and then we also are working on a four liter uh with uh independent throttle bodies and only air cooled only air cooled yes no people love that air cooled thing yeah well well this is what everybody loves yeah and what does this weigh any idea this weighs a little over this is the lightweight version with the aluminum hoods this is the orig the aluminum front hood Aluminum deck lid from the RS the all model and uh it weighs about 2640 lb wow it's pretty light very light and your horsepower is what this one has about 350 350 okay very nice uh stock transmission 5-speed it's a six-speed oh six speed with the the steel synchros in them limited slip differential all Porsche was that sixspeed originally this was sixspeed original the 99 3es they have six speed all right so what else is different flares flares the then we have the the custom headlights later when we turn them on you'll see it has driving lights built in I see uh they go from yellow with your in in before you start the engine and they they're white this seems like an American modification the drilled door handles yeah well that was uh that was the lightweight all style door handles they did that back original Porsche yeah oh okay interesting okay and always glass never plastic window All Glass yeah another thing that's interesting is the 993 came with gluten windshields right so you had we had to modify the windshield frame in order to take the the older style rubber windows so there's a lot there's a quite more quite a lot more things to do on the 993s versus the 964 air conditioning air conditioning all new rebuil all components are new and how many of these have you built so far we have uh seven seven were built okay two were sold in Europe we have three ready to go and two more in the pipeline one is a Tara which is very interesting too because as you know the 993s never really came in a real tar right right well let's take a look let's open the front first of all see what is that completely stock the trunk in front no it's all redone we have a a strut support in it go to let you find it where is a oh there down there of course okay great go go around let's open it up and this is not Factory obviously that's that's that's a modification this is a modification this is a strat support did it ever have a Port here originally or originally no and then we have the matching luggage of course yeah I don't know any guys that if you can get a woman to put her stuff in your maxing luggage well you are just m of magic I'm sorry guys always have the M the girls go no I'm not using that CU you've got oil and everything else in it you know just makes me laugh okay and this cover here is obviously in a little bit of trunk space in there yeah well and that's the Porsche tool kit down there that's a Porsche tool kit yes remember when cars came with tool kits yes here's your tool kit now all right that's it called AAA called AAA let's go around open up the back electric windows or roll up Windows these are converted back to roll up for for weight okay but most of them come with electric windows let's take a look at the deck L before we open it are these original these are 911r correct yes these are 911r and these you have the vent here but these louvers are also period correct period correct but not in the standard 911 just in the r only on the r the race version that's why it has those uh hinges too I'll show you so this is aluminum very lightweight right and then so for the mechanics to work comfortably on the see look all kinds of room so you're not doing this exactly yeah and just got all kinds of room in here work oh my God you can't even see the ground every every inch of space is taken up the big compressor and everything else there very nice yeah this is the last of the air cooled isn't it it is yeah and people love these that sound sound the way they yeah just couldn't meet emissions not even close yeah they tightened that up a little bit you had to go with water cooled for valve heads and right that was the end of an era and 350 horsepower with 2600 lb is really like a normal car with about 500 horsepower isn't it just about all the the newer Vehicles they get heavier and heavier with all the added equipment and we always talk about this you know I've got my I've got a 26 Lotus that's 1275 lbs I mean it doesn't weigh anything it's only 220 horsepower VI that's nothing then take them for a ride they go oh my God this is uh yeah a lot more than nothing and obviously you've got tire is much stickier and wider than would have been yes do you have to beep up beep up the transact transmission because of that the transmission is uh Porsche with uh 40% limited slip differential and steel synchros it's beefed up a little bit you know tires are cheap clutches you know you you the oh okay but if you're not this whole thing Falls AP exactly nicely done is this a carbon fiber this is a carbon fiber overlay yes on the original stuff the oral intake manifolds and right but those would not have been carbon fiber back in the day because there were no carbon fiber yes yeah nicely done well I mean it's just beautiful workmanship thank you so now if I have if I have a a 993 do I bring it to you and you modify mine or you just buy a car modify it and then either way oh you can bring it to us or we can Source one for you and then build it and what is it is the time frame to do something with this time frame right now is about 6 months oh really 6 months yeah wow you get a get a get a tire change in six months he says well that's pretty good not bad and how much is this modification I can't even imagine they start out the base model start out around 720 your imagination dictates the rest of imagination dictates the rest well you know that's what stuff costs nowadays you know you know I remember when I work in McDonald's hamburgers are 15 I go to McDonald I get a hamburger Coke and Fry that's $23 $23 you know so just put that into Porsche food and you see how expensive it gets you can't buy the barbecue sauce anymore that's right that's right well very good let's take let's take a look at the interior cuz that's where the Italians really sh yes wow beautiful interior what did you call this again the this fabric is Pepita okay the Porsche right uh those are period correct ricaro buckets right uh rsr steering wheel and this is Italian leather obviously yes it is so another one this is a Porsche classic Radio so it actually has Bluetooth uh phone integration and such updated yeah very ni so it is kind of it could be used as an everyday dri these look really comfortable these these yeah they're not the real small ones right no yeah those butter crunching ones are just annoying to me yeah it's just a beautiful car and you know there something about dri if you've never driven an because there somebody young people now never driven an air cooled Porsche they really just don't understand what's all the fuss is about but when you do it you really it's something special you get that ringing in your ear and it's just it's just a lot of things it's a little different little different yeah and that's the standard Dash layout correct yes yeah I hate when they modify it so much I can't recognize what it used to be and then what am I doing you know might well buy a new car you know so to me digital gauges and stuff in it that's it's hard to believe this was a 30-year old design already but it's more than that but are we about ready to take it for a ride sure let's take it for a ride all right maybe we might have to get some gas maybe yeah it feels very nice yeah yeah we didn't set it up too hard it has um KW 4 lightweight suspension feels right tight it's a lot of fun to drive yeah feel free to step on it another m a lightweight car you know absolutely por always the right size for a sports car to be not too big yeah and it has this open air feel yeah constricted when you look in the back you feel like it's ready to handle the road you rebuild the whole Motors obviously yes completely down to the to just a stock or you go above stock this is a 3.8 L it came stock with a 3.6 L uh RS cams right lightweight flywheel two valve or four valve head two valve head two valve mik the r oh yeah there the single M fly wheeels the lightweight clutch yeah how much lighter is this in the stock 993 about 500 lb oh that much H it's a yeah 993 is a pretty heavy car what exhaust system is that this no it's a car graphic that's sold through Porsche yeah it's not a annoyingly loud it's got a nice yeah it's it's right right there and it still abides by German noise rules right now tell us a story about the company how did the uh lab 11 was founded by uh Pino l r Roa and his daughter Pino even though he's Italian he's a huge Porsche fan right he actually uh when he was a kid he went to the the Frankfurt boto show the IAA he made it his older brother take him there yeah and he saw the first 930 Turbo right and of course it was behind robes and this and that so he told his brother you think I can sit in it and his no way no way so he snuck in sat in the car then of course some guy came in and he said you like this car huh I said yeah I love it and so you you're Italian yes so you don't like Ferraris you like Porsches yeah I love I love Porsches so they got him a bunch of stuff you know model cars and ever since then he's a yeah he's a Porche young absolutely we always a pora guy me yes I I grew up south of stutgart and that was always my favorite well you kind of close to Mercedes too aren't you yeah Mercedes Porsche but I I always had I don't know I always loved those cars yeah yeah when I was a kid um I visited my my aunt she's now 97 I refused to drink anything out of a glass that didn't have I had a special glass with a uh green Porsche on it and I wouldn't drink anything I was like five or so she still has that glass by the way well it feels right planted very firm you got tires was so much better than whatever they had back in the day oh yes those michelins are great is this a stock porer wheel leather WRA or is it this is a rsr wheel rsr wheel wrapped in Alcantara yeah sounds good just the right sound glad you like it well you know for around town you could be a little noisier but on a trip that's exactly right it's droning in your head yeah it just about as far as you want to go with a street car and still have a car you know exactly my favorite thing about 9/11 is as oppos a lot of other classic cars people brag about how many miles they have on you know some people go I've had this 30 years got 12200 M what f is that exactly you know I mean yeah doesn't make any sense 40 m a year yeah where is this I mean Porsche guys all the time Porsche Corvette guys 100 Grand 125,000 no issues I can't imagine how many tuners and Builders there must be in and around Germany you know yeah there a lot yeah we always discover these and the quality of Germany is always EX because obviously it's got to be a government standard and you guys have to meet the Porche standard right yes exactly and I congratulate par for allowing that to happen a lot of Manufacturers you modify their car get get out now you know it's dangerous blah blah blah whereas par you think they think you can do it better yeah they you know give you credit if you do I think it's a wonderful thing yeah they let the tunos yeah on in and help them out even CU it keeps these air cool cars on the road for decades longer yes because it's such a team to support them AEL thank you very much my friend appreciate thanks for bringing this by thank you for having us and how can they get in touch with you what's the website it is lab1 usa.com lab1 la1 usa.com we'll check it out all right appreciate that see you guys next week thank youmy favorite thing could be used as an everyday dri these look really comfortable these these yeah they're not the real small ones right no yeah those butter crunching ones are just annoying to me yeah it's just a beautiful car and you know there something about dri if you've never driven an because there somebody young people now never driven an air cooled Porsche they really just don't understand what's all the fuss is about but when you do it you really it's something special you get that ringing in your ear and it's just it's just a lot of things it's a little different little different yeah and that's the standard Dash layout correct yes yeah I hate when they modify it so much I can't recognize what it used to be and then what am I doing you know might well buy a new car you know so to me digital gauges and stuff in it that's it's hard to believe this was a 30-year old design already but it's more than that but are we about ready to take it for a ride sure let's take it for a ride all right maybe we might have to get some gas maybe yeah it feels very nice yeah yeah we didn't set it up too hard it has um KW 4 lightweight suspension feels right tight it's a lot of fun to drive yeah feel free to step on it another m a lightweight car you know absolutely por always the right size for a sports car to be not too big yeah and it has this open air feel yeah constricted when you look in the back you feel like it's ready to handle the road you rebuild the whole Motors obviously yes completely down to the to just a stock or you go above stock this is a 3.8 L it came stock with a 3.6 L uh RS cams right lightweight flywheel two valve or four valve head two valve head two valve mik the r oh yeah there the single M fly wheeels the lightweight clutch yeah how much lighter is this in the stock 993 about 500 lb oh that much H it's a yeah 993 is a pretty heavy car what exhaust system is that this no it's a car graphic that's sold through Porsche yeah it's not a annoyingly loud it's got a nice yeah it's it's right right there and it still abides by German noise rules right now tell us a story about the company how did the uh lab 11 was founded by uh Pino l r Roa and his daughter Pino even though he's Italian he's a huge Porsche fan right he actually uh when he was a kid he went to the the Frankfurt boto show the IAA he made it his older brother take him there yeah and he saw the first 930 Turbo right and of course it was behind robes and this and that so he told his brother you think I can sit in it and his no way no way so he snuck in sat in the car then of course some guy came in and he said you like this car huh I said yeah I love it and so you you're Italian yes so you don't like Ferraris you like Porsches yeah I love I love Porsches so they got him a bunch of stuff you know model cars and ever since then he's a yeah he's a Porche young absolutely we always a pora guy me yes I I grew up south of stutgart and that was always my favorite well you kind of close to Mercedes too aren't you yeah Mercedes Porsche but I I always had I don't know I always loved those cars yeah yeah when I was a kid um I visited my my aunt she's now 97 I refused to drink anything out of a glass that didn't have I had a special glass with a uh green Porsche on it and I wouldn't drink anything I was like five or so she still has that glass by the way well it feels right planted very firm you got tires was so much better than whatever they had back in the day oh yes those michelins are great is this a stock porer wheel leather WRA or is it this is a rsr wheel rsr wheel wrapped in Alcantara yeah sounds good just the right sound glad you like it well you know for around town you could be a little noisier but on a trip that's exactly right it's droning in your head yeah it just about as far as you want to go with a street car and still have a car you know exactly my favorite thing about 9/11 is as oppos a lot of other classic cars people brag about how many miles they have on you know some people go I've had this 30 years got 12200 M what f is that exactly you know I mean yeah doesn't make any sense 40 m a year yeah where is this I mean Porsche guys all the time Porsche Corvette guys 100 Grand 125,000 no issues I can't imagine how many tuners and Builders there must be in and around Germany you know yeah there a lot yeah we always discover these and the quality of Germany is always EX because obviously it's got to be a government standard and you guys have to meet the Porche standard right yes exactly and I congratulate par for allowing that to happen a lot of Manufacturers you modify their car get get out now you know it's dangerous blah blah blah whereas par you think they think you can do it better yeah they you know give you credit if you do I think it's a wonderful thing yeah they let the tunos yeah on in and help them out even CU it keeps these air cool cars on the road for decades longer yes because it's such a team to support them AEL thank
