Meet MakerDeck

Starting Locker Gnome: A Journey to Elevate Makers

I started locker gnome back in the mid 90s because I enjoyed elevating others and sharing what other people were doing that I thought was awesome. This experience has been so successful that I'm excited about my latest project, maker deck.

The Experiment with Maker Deck

Maker deck has been running 24/7 on Twitch with the chat. The chat is filled with people who normally stream and also those who don't normally stream anywhere. It's a combination of both, which makes it a great way to discover new makers, whether they have Twitch channels or YouTube channels, or are active on other social media platforms.

The maker deck project aggregates different types of makers, bringing them together for cross-discovery. This has been a thrilling experience, as I finally feel like I have a small place in the overarching maker community and 3D printing community of people. The maker deck project is one spot where we're trying to draw attention in multiple directions, as otherwise discovery would be impossible.

The Challenges of Time

There are so many people doing amazing things that our time does not scale. If we could bring up to 10 of them together at a time in a stream and have the chat room, everyone would appreciate it. It seems that people do appreciate this, and we're just getting started. We've had a few hiccups, but nothing too much to overcome.

The Importance of Patience

We're still learning and overcoming challenges as we go. The experience has been fun more than anything, and we're looking forward to what's next. One of our admins is flipping through the scenes, probably Pez Liz from old vlog days. Vlogs may not be coming back, but we're pouring all our time and attention into maker deck.

Staying Tuned In

If you don't want to tune in to the broadcast, that's fine. Don't say you miss me because I'm still there. You don't even need a Twitch account to watch this; just pull it up on Twitch at twitch.tv/makerdeck. The links are probably in the video description for those who want to join and watch.

Setting Up Your Workspace

To make use of maker deck, you'll need a TV with space for the stream or a second monitor to keep it on display without distractions. You don't have to listen to voices; this is just about makers making things. It's like live.pirillo.com, amped up to a factor of 100, and I'm on decaf coffee as well.

Checking In

The maker deck project is different from my old channel like locker gnome. This is not me, but it's a group of people that you'll see over there in the channel for maker deck. The experience has been fun more than anything, and we're looking forward to what's next.
