What Did Microsoft ACTUALLY Change - 'New' Surface Pro (5)

The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 has received an upgrade, and as expected, it's still a great option for those looking for a portable laptop with impressive performance.

One of the things that stands out about this device is its pen. The new Surface Pen is welcome improvements over the old one. It boasts 496 points of pressure sensitivity, which is significantly better than the previous model's 1024 points of pressure sensitivity. The actuation force needed to make a line has also decreased from 21 G to just 10 G, making it even more responsive and accurate. Additionally, the pen supports tilt for shading, which is super cool. With only 21 milliseconds of latency, it's apparently the fastest digital pen on the planet. However, users will have to purchase the Surface Pen separately, as it's not included in the box.

The Surface Pro 4 also comes with a rather iconic part of the laptop, the Surface Pen, which is now sold separately. Fortunately, the new pen is forwards compatible with the previous version, and vice versa, so if you already own one of these pens, you can use it without having to buy a whole new laptop. However, this means that users will have to spend extra money on the pen, which might be a significant cost addition.

The I/O ports on the left-hand side of the device are another area where Microsoft could have improved. You've got a headset jack on the bottom, a cover port on the right-hand side, a mini display port, a Surface Connect port, and a full-size USB 3.0 port along with a micro SD card slot on the bottom. The lack of Thunderbolt 3 or USBC feels somewhat dated at this point, and considering Lonus previously criticized the Surface Pro 4 for lacking these features, it's surprising that they didn't make them available in this revision. Additionally, there's no full-size SD slot, which is a major omission.

If you're unsatisfied with the I/O options on the device, don't worry; you can use the dock. However, just like the Surface Pen, the dock is also sold separately. This means that users might need to purchase additional accessories to get the most out of their laptop.

Finally, the battery life on this device is impressive, with up to 13.5 hours of video playback. While this isn't particularly remarkable by today's standards, it's still a significant advantage for those who need a laptop that can last all day without needing to be recharged.

In conclusion, two or so months ago, Lonus looked at the Surface Pro 4 and deemed it at least worthy of consideration depending on your use case. Now, with its upgrade, it's an even better option. The build quality is excellent as long as you never have to take it apart, but I do wish Microsoft had taken another look at their I/O and modernized it a bit more. As it stands, the Surface Pro 4 is a very interesting laptop that feels like a game that really needs its DLC to be fully featured and fully complete. If you're buying this, you probably want it for some type of design work, and it doesn't come with the pen or keyboard out of the box. You might need to plug more than one thing into it at a time, so you might need the dock.

The future of the Surface Pro is uncertain, but Lonus hopes that Microsoft will address these issues in the next version of the device. Perhaps we'll see a new Surface Pro with improved I/O and accessories included in the box. Maybe they'll even skip some numbers and call it the Surface Pro 10. Whatever the case may be, Lonus can't wait to get their hands on it.
