BlackBerry KeyOne Black Review - The Business Android Smartphone

I am designed if you are a multimedia junkie because the screen size is just 4.5 in and while you're watching YouTube it's in the 3x2 aspect ratio the screen size and videos and stuff is into 16x9 so you get that black uh pillar boxes when you watch the video so again if you watch a lot of videos then I would not recommend you this device don't get me wrong it will work fine uh for example let me actually show you a sample uh video so here is a video sample as you can see and uh as you can see it has that uh what do you say pillow boxing so yes it will play uh YouTube videos and other stuff fine but again because of uh let me raise the volume also this is the volume level facing camera and lastly now this is the last choice that I have so as you can see you get that slight to pillar boxing so if you are a multimedia junky because of the smaller screen size I wouldn't recommend now moving to gaming I did uh play a few games and I was surprised that the gaming performance was actually really good as you can see I played this Asal extreme and it ran it fine without any issues but the thing is that as the physical keyboard comes in your way if you do heavy gaming and you play a lot of games it's not a very comfortable experience in fact I would say if you want a smartphone particularly for a lot of multimedia consumption and gaming there are lot of other phones at a cheaper price point that do a far better job than this one now uh moving to another thing that I've noticed is uh that uh don't get me wrong in terms of multitasking and general performance it was fine but I noticed that this phone if it's not used continuously for what 5 6 hours for example when you are sleeping it tries to kill a lot of background tasks that are there for example as you can see I have so many uh apps that are there in the multitasking tray but every day in the morning when I open this and look at it only a bunch of them are there others are automatically killed I think so Blackberry is doing this intentionally to uh save on battery life or uh and battery life as I mentioned was good but I find it silly that it's trying to kill all these tasks in the background when not used for a long time it's not a deal breaker but I have noticed this and I find it really crazy because the battery life is amazing on this device and lastly coming to the pricing this uh uh Blackberry uh special edition is priced in India for rupes 40,000 and it is coming with the Snapdragon 625 uh chipset for example the Moto Z uh play that has the snap dragon 625 chipset is selling for what about 25,000 yes this one has additional hardware like the physical keyboard and all those things yeah I understand this cost a little bit so maybe yeah like 4 5,000 more so I would say this would have been uh great if they would have ideally priced it around 30,000 but they have priced it at around 40,000 so definitely you are paying that Blackberry tax for example you play uh pay that with iPhone Samsung flagships so again you're paying that extra what do you say uh premium for the Blackberry branding and moreover I would say overall to conclude this video this is a smartphone that I wouldn't recommend to everyone because of the some of the shortcomings that I have mentioned to you particularly if you are sort of a gamer and a multimedia uh guy but again if you're sort of a business user this is one of those special phones that I really enjoyed while testing and yes it's just about 10 days since I've started using this device but I really appreciate that with this physical keyboard you can map uh any key to any shortcut and it really makes a difference and uh it makes you productive so if you're sort of a very heavy business user and don't you're not that much bothered about gaming and stuff but productivity and you are a person who might use the physical keyboard then you can certainly have a look at this Blackberry key one but do remember you are paying that Blackberry tax uh that is the extra price in my Frank Opinion and by the way guys this Blackberry key one is being sold in India by Amazon India I'll leave the link for Amazon India in the show notes so if you are purchasing it do use my link it does help the channel and if you're still not subscribed to my YouTube channel hit that subscribe button

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi there this is ranit and in this uh video we'll be doing the review for this blackberry key1 and this is a very different kind of Android phone yes it's a Blackberry but is running over Android and comes with Android no good and I'll be dividing this uh review in my regular sense stats pros and cons and also at the later part of the video I'll uh put a conclusion uh with my personal experience because it's been 10 days since I've been using this device and this is sort of a very different kind of a device this is normal not a normal device If you're sort of a gamer or stuff like that this is not for you this Blackberry key one is parted by the Snapdragon 625 chipset which is octacore processor it has a 4.5in IPS uh display it's in the 3x2 ratio it has Gorilla Glass 4 protection it has 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage it's a dual some device moving to the camera it has a 12 megap rear facing camera 8 mapix front facing camer camera it also has a fingerprint uh scanner which is the space bar button on the keyboard and it has a 355 mAh battery which supports quick charging 3 and it comes out of the box with Android 7.1 now let's divide this uh review between the pros and cons and first let's talk about the pros what are the good things about this uh device and first let's talk about the build quality uh the build quality of this device is excellent uh it feels really sof solid in the hand it's unlike the Blackberry PRI which I covered about a year ago there I was not happy with the build quality but this one is that solid legendary build quality that we expect from Blackberry the build quality is excellent and I also really like this back it's that texturized sort of gives you that rubber finish and it gives a very good grip while you talk with this device un like many of the new smartphones that come with the glass back so you don't have to worry that this phone will slip out of your head it's it's slightly on the heavier side uh but overall in terms of build quality excellent job that Blackberry has done and immediately when you pick up this phone you'll appreciate that uh build quality it is slightly on the chunkier side it's not the slimmest phone but yeah in terms of build quality it's uh built very well now moving to another thing uh again it runs over Android it's a traditional Android phone guys uh though it's Blackberry we have the Play Store you can download all the apps and stuff and it has that a special launcher that is known as the Blackberry launcher it looks like almost a stock Android launcher and what makes this launcher special is that it's close to stock Android so you don't have to relearn but there are some additional shortcuts that we have for example uh again check out my unboxing there have displayed it I won't do it again here uh if you see some apps that have three dots uh underneath that that means that app has an uh widget and you can just swipe up to access that widget so it's very easy to access a lot more information you don't have to actually place a widget for example if you have new WhatsApp you just swipe up it'll show right now I don't have anything but if I had any messages it would have shown so uh this makes uh it uh using it very uh simple and again uh it's a timesaver the whole thing about this Blackberry uh device is that it's catering to a business audience and it tries to save a little bit of time and I would say this Blackberry launcher is very close to stock Android so it's very familiar experience and it doesn't add that bloess that other launchers add so one of the best launchers experience that I have uh noticed now moving to General usage the general usage is actually really good it is having the Snapdragon 625 uh chipset here is a small clip that I shot regarding the general usage General operations on this device is good as you can see it's traditional Android that we are running and nothing uh that special but it's over this uh Blackberry what do you say launcher that we have uh and you can just fwip for widgets and this is a special thing that they have this is known as shortcuts and uh I'll talk about the keyboard you can assign any of these shortcuts and get a lot of things said and for example uh to check the battery I don't have to go into the settings and stuff have assigned that shortcut to this B if I just press that it shows me the battery stats and all that things so you can assign a lot of shortcuts and stuff and in general operations more or less this device works fine it's a Snapdragon 625 chipset so it's fairly good uh but uh occasionally I have noticed some minor lag at times it's not that you'll notice it always but I'd say two three% times when I was doing heavy multitasking switching between the tasks uh that's what I've noticed but General operations uh it's uh good and uh the Snapdragon 645 handles it fine for daily tasks and the biggest thing about this device is this physical keyboard that we have that's why the name Blackberry key1 I think so this is one one of the only Android device that we have right now that comes with a physical keyboard uh so and that makes this device very different let me actually show you why the video that I shot uh for the first couple of days regarding the keyboard in terms of typing uh it was a very difficult to get used to it I just couldn't type even one line of word without making any uh mistakes but now as you saw that minor lag that I uh sometimes it's happening but now I've gotten used to this keyboard and I can type and we have this Auto suggestions here uh for example this is a test I'm going to type this is see as you can see a came out already and uh test so the auto correction is very uh good and you have these auto correct words over here and let's say I want to uh use this driver just swipe like this and it works uh so keyboard it does take quite a bit of time to get used to it and still after 10 days I won't say that I am faster than a virtual keyboard but as this is a physical keyboard after some time you'll make a lot less mistakes while you are typing and some of you asked me is this backlit yes this is actually uh backlit and what does this keyboard do apart from all this for example let me open the browser you can this is going to act like a trackpad so you can use this while you're browsing you don't have to yes obviously you can touch the screen and move around uh but it's in uh you have to move your thumb up you don't have to do that you can do it like this left and right also works so unconsciously after a couple of days I noticed while I was browsing on the web I was using this to move around and that works actually really well apart from that uh the biggest uh thing about this keyboard is that you can assign any key to any shortcut and we have two options one is known as the short press and another is known as the long press for example uh for t for the short press I have uh set it to torch if I just press t as you can see it uh switches on the Torches switches it off and for long press I have assigned it to Twitter so if I hold it for a second uh Twitter launches and this works with other apps for example W I have set it to WhatsApp and as you can see WhatsApp my WhatsApp opens so I've set it up you can even actually assign what do you say uh speed dial for example s is my uh driver if I just click short press that it directly dials to my driver so this can be a huge Time Saver for example I like to check the battery quite a bit so I just press this B button and I get the battery starts so you can assign any shortcut to any key and this makes your life very easy for example Zed I have assigned to tasks and if I just press task all my tasks come so this is a device uh that tries to save a little bit of time that you have and this might be beneficial for uh what do you say business person and you can just memorize whatever shortcuts you have uh done and it really uh saves the time and uh regarding the fingerprint scanner the fingerprint scanner is embedded on this uh what do you say space bar and if you just tap your finger it unlocks the device so that's what it is uh only only thing I don't like is that the power button is over here on the left it's in an awkward position but that double tap to uh wake and sleep is there so example if I double tap it goes to sleep so I hardly use the power onoff button because if you just press your finger it unlocks the device and switches it on and a double tap it can go to sleep and uh so yeah the keyboard I wouldn't say Have Become faster in typing uh and it'll take you some time to get used to the keyboard and uh you might not be as fast as a virtual keyboard but after some times using this keyboard uh you'll make a lot less mistakes and the biggest USB for me for this keyboard is that shortcuts that you can assign and if you use them effectively it can really save quite a bit of uh time now moving to another thing that is the audio output it has a single speaker here and I would say it's above average it's not the loudest but again uh in a normal scenario it's loud enough that you'll notice and also when you get notifications and stuff it's loud and clear we also have a physical LED notification light that lights up and now moving to the audio wi the headphone jack I thought it might not be great because this is a business oriented uh smartphone so I did not have a lot of expectations but I was very pleasantly surprised that the audio output that I was getting from the headphone jack is excellent the audio output was good and it could even drive heavy headphones uh and I was very surprised so if you are a person who's critical about music and listens to a lot of music while the headphone jack then this phone will not disappoint you and that was a surprise for me also now moving to uh the screen it is having that 4.5 in screen and it's IPS uh screen uh screen quality is good viewing angles are good and even in direct sunlight uh the screen is uh uh good I would say but again I don't like the fact that even at the lowest brightness the screen is actually uh pretty bright and this is not an issue for most of the people but I normally use even my phones at night and I close all the lights and even at the lowest brightness it's actually pretty bright so that is one thing uh that I'm not happy about but again if you just talk about the screen quality the screen quality is good it's a IPS LCD screen that they are using and also when it comes to battery life this phone gets very good battery life which might be important If you're sort of a business user this can easily last for about one and a half uh days with typical uh usage and in terms of screen on time easily above 5 and 1 half to 6 hours of screen on time that is with about 1 and 1 half days of usage with two days uh two uh Sims only on mobile data even if you are that sort of a user uh it can easily last for about 1 and a half days now moving to another thing is that uh I like the fact that Blackberry is going to provide what do you say monthly Android security updates to this device so that's a actually a very good thing with this uh device also now moving to security uh this is a phone that is designed for business use so it has a couple of security layers and uh now moving to the camera the rear facing camera is actually a 12 megap uh sensor and I've taken some casual shots as you can see and I was surprised that the camera performance is actually good I didn't have a lot of expectations because this does not have Optical image stabilization uh but the camera sensor is the same that we found on the Google pixel and as you can see overall I would say the camera performance was actually good I wouldn't say it can compete with actually the pixel or even the Galaxy S8 but considering uh I would say if you take shots casually then the uh samples as you see came out actually uh really good it can also record video uh up to 4K uh I didn't record it in 4k because it does not have any Optical image stabilization hence 4K video is very what do you say shaky but I did record 1080p video clip and even a video clip with the front facing camera here are the samples uh this is a quick video with the front facing camera of this blackberry key1 and I'm recording it at uh 1080p so it's very quick sample with the front facing uh camera staring this quick sample with the rear facing camera and that's my dad you keep asking me uh what's the secret about the garden that's um in the morning doing something uh this I'm recording at uh 1080p it can also record in 4k but guys do understand that this does not have any Optical image stabilization so I'm just going to walk so so this should give you an idea how would be the video if you move around and uh this is in 1080P now moving to the Edition that is being sold in India this is the Blackberry uh special edition black and I would say this is sort of a souped up version of the version that is being sold in uh other countries like United States and other countries for example uh the regular version of the Blackberry key1 comes with 3 GB of RAM and and 32 GB of internal storage but the one this the Special Edition comes with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage so it's nice to see that we are getting this uh special edition that has higher RAM and higher internal storage so these were the good things about this device now let's move to the cons these are the things that I simply did not like with this device and the first thing is regarding the weight it is slightly on the heavier side this device weighs 180 g don't get me wrong not a deal breaker but for for the first 2 three days when I was typing and you type with this device with two hands I always felt that it was slightly on the heavier side now it's been almost 10 days I've got used to it but again if you don't like slightly heavier uh phones then you might and you are very sensitive about the weight then you might not like this device uh now moving to another net picking is that the power button is here on the left on the top and it's in a very awkward uh position so I simply don't like uh the placement of the power button but again as I've shown you earlier I have managed not to use this power button but again I simply don't like the position of the power onoff button now moving to multimedia yes it can play YouTube you can watch content on it but this is not designed if you are a multimedia junkie because the screen size is just 4.5 in and while you're watching YouTube it's in the 3x2 aspect ratio the screen size and videos and stuff is into 16x9 so you get that black uh pillar boxes when you watch the video so again if you watch a lot of videos then I would not recommend you this device don't get me wrong it will work fine uh for example let me actually show you a sample uh video so here is a video sample as you can see and uh as you can see it has that uh what do you say pillow boxing so yes it will play uh YouTube videos and other stuff fine but again because of uh let me raise the volume also this is the volume level facing camera and lastly now this is the last choice that I have so as you can see you get that slight to pillar boxing so if you are a multimedia junky because of the smaller screen size I wouldn't recommend now moving to gaming I did uh play a few games and I was surprised that the gaming performance was actually really good as you can see I played this Asal extreme and it ran it fine without any issues but the thing is that as the physical keyboard comes in your way uh if you do heavy gaming and you play a lot of games it's not a very comfortable experience in fact I would say if you want a smartphone particularly for a lot of multimedia consumption and gaming there are lot of other phones at a cheaper price point that do a far better job than this one now uh moving to another thing that I've noticed is uh that uh don't get me wrong in terms of multitasking and general performance it was fine but I noticed that this phone if it's not used continuously for what 5 6 hours for example when you are sleeping it tries to kill a lot of background what do you say uh tasks that are there for example as you can see I have so many uh apps that are there in the multitasking tray but every day in the morning when I open this and look at it only a bunch of them are there others are automatically killed I think so Blackberry is doing this intentionally to uh save on battery life or uh and battery life as I mentioned was good but I find it silly that it's trying to kill all these task in the background when not used for a long time it's not a deal breaker but I have noticed this and I find it really crazy because the battery life is amazing on this device and lastly uh coming to the pricing this uh uh Blackberry uh special edition is priced in India for rupes 40,000 and it is coming with the Snapdragon 625 uh chipset for example the Moto Z uh play that has the snap dragon 625 chipset is selling for what about 25,000 yes this one has additional hardw like the physical keyboard and all those things yeah I understand this cost a little bit so maybe yeah like 4 5,000 more so I would say this would have been uh great if they would have ideally priced it around 30,000 but they have priced it at around 40,000 so definitely you are paying that Blackberry tax for example you play uh pay that with iPhone Samsung flagships so again you're paying that extra what do you say uh premium for the Blackberry branding and moreover I would say overall uh to conclude this video this is a smartphone that I wouldn't recommend to everyone because of the some of the shortcomings that I have uh mentioned to you particularly if you are sort of a gamer and a multimedia uh guy uh but again if you're sort of a business user this is one of those special phones that I really enjoyed while testing and yes it's just about 10 days since I've started using this device but I really appreciate that with this physical keyboard you can map uh any key to any shortcut and it really makes a difference and uh it makes you productive so if you're sort of a very heavy business user and don't you're not that much bothered about gaming and stuff but productivity and you are a person who might use the physical keyboard then you can certainly have a look at this Blackberry key one but do remember you are paying that Blackberry tax uh that is the extra price in my Frank Opinion and by the way guys this Blackberry key one is being sold in India by Amazon India I'll leave the link for Amazon India in the show notes so if you are purchasing it do use my link it does help the channel and if you're still not subscribed to my YouTube channel hit that subscribe button thanks for watching this is ranit and I hope to see you in my next videohi there this is ranit and in this uh video we'll be doing the review for this blackberry key1 and this is a very different kind of Android and it gives a very good grip while you talk with this device un like many of the new smartphones that come with the glass back so you don't have to worry that this phone will slip out of your head it's it's slightly on the heavier side uh but overall in terms of build quality excellent job that Blackberry has done and immediately when you pick up this phone you'll appreciate that uh build that's my dad you keep asking me uh what's the secret about the garden that's um in the morning doing something uh this I'm recording at uh 1080p it can also record in 4k but guys do understand that this does not have any Optical image stabilization so I'm just going to walk so so this should give you an idea how would be the video if you move around and uh this is in 1080P now moving to the Edition that is being sold in India this is the Blackberry uh special edition black and I would say this is sort of a souped up version of the version that is being sold in uh other countries like United States and other countries for example uh the regular version of the Blackberry key1 comes with 3 GB of RAM and and 32 GB of internal storage but the one this the Special Edition comes with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage so it's nice to see that we are getting this uh special edition that has higher RAM and higher internal storage so these were the good things about this device now let's move to the cons these are the things that I simply did not like with this device and the first thing is regarding the weight it is slightly on the heavier side this device weighs 180 g don't get me wrong not a deal breaker but for for the first 2 three days when I was typing and you type with this device with two hands I always felt that it was slightly on the heavier side now it's been almost 10 days I've got used to it but again if you don't like slightly heavier uh phones then you might and you are very sensitive about the weight then you might not like this device uh now moving to another net picking is that the power button is here on the left on the top and it's in a very awkward uh position so I simply don't like uh the placement of the power button but again as I've shown you earlier I have managed not to use this power button but again I simply don't like the position of the power onoff button now moving to multimedia yes it can play YouTube you can watch content on it but this is not designed if you are a multimedia junkie because the screen size is just 4.5 in and while you're watching YouTube it's in the 3x2 aspect ratio the screen size and videos and stuff is into 16x9 so you get that black uh pillar boxes when you watch the video so again if you watch a lot of videos then I would not recommend you this device don't get me wrong it will work fine uh for example let me actually show you a sample uh video so here is a video sample as you can see and uh as you can see it has that uh what do you say pillow boxing so yes it will play uh YouTube videos and other stuff fine but again because of uh let me raise the volume also this is the volume level facing camera and lastly now this is the last choice that I have so as you can see you get that slight to pillar boxing so if you are a multimedia junky because of the smaller screen size I wouldn't recommend now moving to gaming I did uh play a few games and I was surprised that the gaming performance was actually really good as you can see I played this Asal extreme and it ran it fine without any issues but the thing is that as the physical keyboard comes in your way uh if you do heavy gaming and you play a lot of games it's not a very comfortable experience in fact I would say if you want a smartphone particularly for a lot of multimedia consumption and gaming there are lot of other phones at a cheaper price point that do a far better job than this one now uh moving to another thing that I've noticed is uh that uh don't get me wrong in terms of multitasking and general performance it was fine but I noticed that this phone if it's not used continuously for what 5 6 hours for example when you are sleeping it tries to kill a lot of background what do you say uh tasks that are there for example as you can see I have so many uh apps that are there in the multitasking tray but every day in the morning when I open this and look at it only a bunch of them are there others are automatically killed I think so Blackberry is doing this intentionally to uh save on battery life or uh and battery life as I mentioned was good but I find it silly that it's trying to kill all these task in the background when not used for a long time it's not a deal breaker but I have noticed this and I find it really crazy because the battery life is amazing on this device and lastly uh coming to the pricing this uh uh Blackberry uh special edition is priced in India for rupes 40,000 and it is coming with the Snapdragon 625 uh chipset for example the Moto Z uh play that has the snap dragon 625 chipset is selling for what about 25,000 yes this one has additional hardw like the physical keyboard and all those things yeah I understand this cost a little bit so maybe yeah like 4 5,000 more so I would say this would have been uh great if they would have ideally priced it around 30,000 but they have priced it at around 40,000 so definitely you are paying that Blackberry tax for example you play uh pay that with iPhone Samsung flagships so again you're paying that extra what do you say uh premium for the Blackberry branding and moreover I would say overall uh to conclude this video this is a smartphone that I wouldn't recommend to everyone because of the some of the shortcomings that I have uh mentioned to you particularly if you are sort of a gamer and a multimedia uh guy uh but again if you're sort of a business user this is one of those special phones that I really enjoyed while testing and yes it's just about 10 days since I've started using this device but I really appreciate that with this physical keyboard you can map uh any key to any shortcut and it really makes a difference and uh it makes you productive so if you're sort of a very heavy business user and don't you're not that much bothered about gaming and stuff but productivity and you are a person who might use the physical keyboard then you can certainly have a look at this Blackberry key one but do remember you are paying that Blackberry tax uh that is the extra price in my Frank Opinion and by the way guys this Blackberry key one is being sold in India by Amazon India
