The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood: A 5-Star Review
I recently finished reading The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood, and I must say that it was an absolute delight. This book follows Olive, a graduate student in the science department, who is trying to navigate her way through college while dealing with her feelings for her best friend's ex-boyfriend. Olive's decision to kiss a random professor, Adam, to prove to herself and others that she's over her ex-boyfriend, sets off a chain of events that changes everything.
One of the things I loved about this book was its portrayal of women in male-dominated fields. As someone who isn't familiar with science, I appreciated seeing Olive's experiences and learning more about what it's like to be a woman in STEM. The author did an excellent job of conveying the challenges and obstacles that women face in these fields, and it was inspiring to see Olive overcome them.
The romance in this book was also fantastic. Olive's fake dating arrangement with Adam is set up as a way for her to prove herself to her best friend, but it quickly turns into something more. I loved watching their relationship develop and seeing how they learned to communicate and trust each other. The author did an excellent job of balancing the romance with the science aspect of the story, making it feel like a seamless blend.
What really stood out to me about this book was its cast of characters. Olive is a great protagonist - she's smart, sassy, and relatable. Her best friend is also well-developed, and their relationship is one of my favorite aspects of the book. The supporting characters, including Adam and his colleagues, were equally well-written and added depth to the story.
Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reed: A Beautiful Summer Read
My next review is for Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reed. This book takes place in 1983 and follows the Riva family as they come together for a night of partying at Nina's annual house party. The story is told through multiple perspectives, including those of the five Riva siblings and their parents, and it provides a fascinating glimpse into the family's dynamics.
One of the things that struck me about this book was its portrayal of the Rivias. They're a complex and flawed family, but they're also loving and supportive in their own way. The author does an excellent job of conveying their relationships with each other and with the outside world, and it's clear that they've been through a lot together.
The party scenes are also worth mentioning. They're a highlight of the book, providing a glimpse into the Rivias' wild and carefree side. However, some readers have complained about the random scenes with different partygoers, which don't add much to the story. While I agree that these scenes can be a bit tedious, they also provide insight into the other characters and their relationships with the Rivas.
The real heart of this book is its exploration of family dynamics and how people come together despite their flaws. The Rivias are a messy family, but they love each other deeply and support each other through thick and thin. This theme resonated with me, and I appreciated seeing it represented in such a beautiful way.
Overall, Malibu Rising was an amazing summer read. It's the perfect book to get lost in when you're looking for a story about family, relationships, and growing up. The author's writing is engaging, and the characters are well-developed and relatable. If you're looking for a book that will transport you to a sunny California summer, look no further than Malibu Rising.
