Apple Watch Series Three: A Game-Changing Addition with LTE Capability
The anticipation is building around Apple's next major product launch, and rumor has it that the Apple Watch Series Three will be announced later this year, possibly alongside the iPhone 8 in September. The latest information suggests that Apple will add a new LTE capable model to its lineup, giving users the ability to make phone calls and receive text messages even when their iPhone is not within range.
So, why would you want an LTE radio inside your Apple watch? The answer lies in the benefits it provides to athletes who want to leave their phone at home and just bring headphones in an Apple watch to the gym or on a run. An LTE capable Apple watch will also let you leave your iPhone at home for a day at the beach or distraction-free night out while still having the ability to answer calls or respond to texts in limited fashion.
However, nothing is official until Apple announces it, and security analysts Mingsha Quo, Bloomberg, and CNBC have all reported that the third generation Apple watch set to arrive this fall will have an optional LTE upgrade. It's expected that Apple will also launch entry-level models that lack cellular connectivity just as the company does with its iPad lineup.
Intel is set to provide the LTE modem for the Apple watch Series three, while US carriers AT&T, Verizon, t-mobile, and Sprint are also on board with plans to sell the device. International availability of the LTE Apple watch is in flux, however, as a small cellular motto may not work with all frequencies around the globe. The Insel modem is also expected to be LTE only to help conserve battery life, meaning 3G reception in poor signal areas won't be compatible.
Another rumor suggested that this year's model could also sport a new form factor, but since then, multiple rumors have said that 2017 upgrade will come in the same 38 and 42 millimeter designs that have existed since 2015. Kuo believes the addition of an LTE model to the Apple watch lineup will provide a boost to sales with total 2017 shipments reaching as high as 18 million units, a 70 percent year-over-year increase.
There are some other LTE capable wearable devices on the market, such as Samsung's Gear S3 SmartWatch, but they aren't nearly as popular as the Apple watch or cheaper less capable wearables like Fitbit. Apple's launch of an LTE connected watch is expected to drive adoption of connect wearables and also potentially cell customers on new data plan editions. AT&T, t-mobile, and Verizon currently offer the addition of wearable data for $10 to $15 per month.
However, it's unknown whether Apple is negotiating plans or pricing structures for Apple Watch Series Three data plans for its arrival this fall. Such a move would not be unprecedented, as Apple pushed carriers to change their strategies in the past with the launches of both the first iPhone in 2007 and the cellular capable iPad in 2010.
