Huawei Mate 20 X Review - An underrated gaming phone

The Huawei Mate 20X: A Gaming Powerhouse with a Twist

The Mate 20X is a phone that defies convention, boasting an enormous 7.2-inch screen and a massive battery capacity, making it practically a tablet compared to other smartphones on the market. Its unique design and features make it stand out from the crowd, but does it live up to its reputation as a top-notch gaming smartphone? In this article, we'll delve into the details of the Mate 20X's specifications, performance, and overall value to determine if it's an underrated gem in the world of gaming smartphones.

Positioning Below the Mate 20 Pro

One of the notable differences between the Mate 20X and its flagship counterpart, the Mate 20 Pro, is the absence of an under-display fingerprint scanner. Instead, the Mate 20X features a rear-mounted placement, which may seem counterintuitive for a device marketed as a gaming powerhouse. Additionally, the phone's screen edges are not curved, adding to its overall bulkiness. However, this "bulky" design is more than compensated by the phone's impressive multimedia capabilities.

Multimedia Experience

The Mate 20X boasts an exceptional display, perfect for gaming and watching videos. The liquid multi-dimensional cooling system ensures that the phone stays cool during prolonged use, while the powerful Dolby Atmos speakers provide an immersive audio experience. Whether you're playing games or streaming your favorite shows, the Mate 20X delivers a top-notch visual and auditory experience.

The Phone's Size: A Double-Edged Sword

One of the most striking features of the Mate 20X is its massive size. Weighing in at approximately 50 grams more than its smaller sibling, the Mate 20, the phone is substantial in hand. However, this bulkiness can be a double-edged sword, as some users may find it unwieldy or difficult to handle. The textured back, dubbed "Hyper Optical Pattern," provides a comfortable grip and helps mitigate this issue.

Camera Capabilities

The Mate 20X's camera setup is arguably its most impressive feature, rivaling that of the Mate 20 Pro in terms of quality and capabilities. With a quad-camera setup featuring a 40MP primary sensor, 16MP front-facing camera, and support for 4K video recording at 60fps, this phone can capture stunning images and footage. Whether you're taking photos or making videos, the Mate 20X delivers exceptional results.

Gaming Performance

The Mate 20X's performance is its strongest aspect, particularly when it comes to gaming. With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 960+ processor, the phone can handle even the most demanding games with ease. Asphalt 9, a popular racing game, was particularly well-suited for the Mate 20X, thanks to its large screen and powerful speakers. However, other games like Ragnarok M and Altos Odyssey benefited from more modest refresh rates and pixel densities.

Battery Life

The Mate 20X's battery life is another area where it shines. With a capacity of over 4000mAh, the phone can last for over a day even with extensive gaming and video watching. In our testing, we found that the phone could go for over 10 hours straight without needing a recharge, leaving over 20% of its capacity remaining.

Charging Speed

Despite having a slower SuperCharge adapter, the Mate 20X still manages to charge relatively quickly. While it may not match the charging speed of some other phones, we found that it took around one hour and 50 minutes to reach full battery from zero.

Gadget Match Seal of Approval

In conclusion, the Huawei Mate 20X is a formidable gaming smartphone that delivers exceptional performance, camera capabilities, and multimedia experience. While its size may be a deterrent for some users, those who value raw power and portability will find this phone hard to beat. As such, we award it our Gadget Match seal of approval, solidifying its position as one of the top gaming smartphones on the market.
