2022 iPhone 14 & SE Lineup — Revealed!

New iPhone 14: What We Can Expect from Apple's Latest Release

As we wait eagerly for the latest installment in Apple's iPhone series, Rene Ritchie shares his insights on what to expect from the upcoming devices. In this video, he takes a closer look at the new iPhone SE and iPhone 14, providing details on their features and potential improvements.

First Up: The New iPhone SE

According to Rene Ritchie, we can expect a new iPhone SE in spring, which will mark a slight upgrade compared to its predecessors. Unlike previous generations, which saw significant changes between the iPhone 5S based SE in 2016 and the iPhone 8 based SE in 2020, this new iteration is expected to be more incremental. The same iPhone 8 enclosure will return, but with some notable upgrades.

The A15 processor and Qualcomm 5G modem are expected to power the new iPhone SE, making it a significant improvement over its predecessor. However, Rene Ritchie notes that the iPhone SE 2 was already challenged by battery life issues, so Apple may need to either boost the capacity or enhance chip efficiency to address this concern.

One aspect that has fans excited is the retention of the home button design for at least one more generation. While some enthusiasts are eager for a full-screen display with no notch and facial recognition, Rene Ritchie doesn't see this happening anytime soon.

The New iPhone 14

Moving on to the iPhone 14, Rene Ritchie highlights that it has been leaking for years already, which is largely due to the fact that we're expecting a significant upgrade in the form of the Pro models. However, the regular 6.1-inch iPhone 14 remains somewhat of an enigma.

We do know that it will be OLED, still sporting a notch, and will likely debut Apple's next-generation silicon, the A16. The A16 is expected to be manufactured on TSMC's four or three nanometer processor, which should bring improvements in efficiency and performance.

Rene Ritchie speculates that this new architecture could include ARMv9.2, but notes that it's more about catching up with Apple's silicon than pushing the company further. The A16 is also expected to boost vector capabilities, potentially leading to interesting advancements in areas such as neural engines and image signal processing.

A Better Camera System

One of the most significant upgrades we can expect from the new iPhone 14 is a better camera system. Rene Ritchie believes that this will include improvements in smart HDR, cinematic mode, and video quality, as well as other features. The ISP (image signal processor) will play a crucial role in these enhancements.

Will These New Flagships Come Out in September?

As we get closer to the release date, we're starting to wonder whether these new flagships will follow their usual pattern of debuting in September. However, there's also a possibility that they might be pushed back to October or even November.

Rene Ritchie notes that it really depends on whether this is 2022 or not. If Apple decides to stick with its traditional release schedule, we can expect the new iPhones to arrive in September as usual. On the other hand, if they decide to experiment with a later release date, we might see them debut in October or November instead.

Conclusion

As we eagerly await the latest iPhone releases, Rene Ritchie's insights provide us with valuable information on what to expect from the upcoming devices. With upgrades like the new A15 processor and Qualcomm 5G modem in the iPhone SE, as well as the potential improvements in the camera system and next-generation silicon in the iPhone 14, it's clear that Apple is committed to innovation.

Whether these new flagships will follow their usual release schedule or not remains to be seen. One thing is certain, however – we can't wait to get our hands on these latest devices and experience all the exciting features they have to offer.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: en(upbeat music)- New iPhone 14,no Mini, but another Max.iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.No iPhone flip or fold,at least not this year, but maybe an iPhone SE3,or 2 1/2, something.I'm Rene Ritchie.YouTube says 70% of you watchingstill aren't subscribed,so hit that button and bellso we can make the absolutebest community in tech together.First up, literally as inas soon as this spring, new iPhone SE, kinda, not the same big leap forwardas the iPhone 5S based SE in 2016to the iPhone 8 based SE in 2020,because only two years later and not four.So maybe more of a smalldiagonal step to the side.Same iPhone 8 enclosurebut new A15 processorand Qualcomm 5G modem.Probably the same X60that's in the iPhone 13,because it's just way, way more efficientthan the previous model. And if this is the wayApple's really going, they're gonna need it.The iPhone SE 2 was already challengedwhen it came to battery life.So unless Apple amps up the capacitythey're really gonna need toamp up the chip efficiency, that and an updated single camera system. Now as much as some homebutton lovers will be ecstaticthat Apple is holding onto that designat least one generation longer, there are gonna be fansof the more modern designdesperate for Apple to move the SEonto like the iPhone XR or 11 platform.Full screen, no face ID,touch ID in the power button, and I would absolutely love to see that,I'm just not sure we'regonna see that any time soon. Then yes, iPhone 14.I know it seems like it'sbeen leaking for years alreadybut that's mostly been the prowhich I'll get to in a minute. The regular 6.1 inch iPhone 14,we actually don't knowthat much about yet, except that it's still gonnabe OLED, still have a notch, and almost certainly debutApple's next generation silicon, the A16, maybe still bionic. And if so that'll show ushow truly happy Apple iswith that architecture. Now the A16 should move to TSMC'sfour or three nanometer processor.Again those aren't actual physical sizes, just marketing terms. But either way that'll helpwith both efficiency and performance, depending on how Applechooses to spend or saveon that new transistorbudget, maybe ARMv9.2.But I continue tobelieve that's more aboutARM catching up to Apple siliconthan helping push Apple any further. It should at least giveus a boost to vector, which still could be allshades of interesting, depending on where Apple takestheir neural engines next. And also a better imagesignal processor, ISP,to improve everything from smart HDRto cinematic mode andvideo, and whatever elseApple wants to throw atthe camera this year. And will all these newflagships come in September, the way they have most years? Will they get pushed back to Octoberthe way they have some years?November, the way they did in 2020?I guess it really dependsif this is 2022 or \"2020 2\",although given their druthersand their financials,I think Apple's always gonna wanna shipas close to the end ofSeptember as inhumanly possible.Sadly, the iPhone Mini sounds likeit's two and done R-I-P,D-E-D, at least for now.Twitter and tech YouTube turns outjust aren't a viable enough market, especially when thatcheap and small markethas been split this timebetween the SE and the Mini, instead of one model thatencompasses both cheap and small, but who knows, I mean, beyond Tim, Joz and Cayan, who obviously know Apple may experimentwith that segment again in the future. This time though, instead reportspoint to a lower cost Max,a non-pro Max and amateur Max,instead of a 5.4 inch iPhone 14 Mini, there'll be a 6.7 inch iPhone 14 Max,which should legit be terrificfor anyone and everyone, who wants or needs that bigger displaywho uses their iPhone as aprimary computing device, who wants that bigger battery, but does not want thatbigger Pro price tag, especially with that moreefficient A16 chip setand next generation Qualcomm X65 5G modem. They'll have their superlong battery life cake, but don't have to payquite so much for it too.And I know some people are also hopingthat Apple will bring 120 Hz promotionto the non-Pro, to the regular lineup, but it's not 120 Hz regular motion. And never say never, but so far,Apple's kept that as oneof the big value adds, the big perks for the Pro lineups, whether it's the iPhone Pro,or the iPad pro, or the MacBook pro.And it's just really hardto see Apple changing that, until there's even somethingbetter to help distinguish, differentiate the Proslike 240 Hz promotion, because the human eyeprobably peaks out at 480 Hz,so we're really still onlyat the beginning of this. And that differentiationprobably won't come from flippingor folding, I mean, eventually, but Apple has beenworking on hinged phonessince at least 2011and proper folding OLED phonesfor the last couple of years, but they apparently stilldon't think the technologyis just anywhere, nearlyready for prime time. They've certainly had the equivalentof the Galaxy folds andflips one, two and threein their labs in testing, they're just going to keep them there,in those labs, in testing, until they think they'vegot something durableand affordable enough toship to mainstream customers,to the hundreds of thousands of peoplewho buy iPhones every year. And it sure doesn't soundlike that's an iPhone 14 flip or fold,at least nowhere nearly yet.So iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max,well, there are still plenty of slips, tweaks to leak and to ship, but so far, what we're hearing is that, instead of stainless steel rails,Apple might go with titaniumto help reduce the weightadded by that extra battery. Also a whole punch instead of a notch, with the infrared camera, the flood illuminator, the Dot projector, all of that buried beneath the display, and only the RGB camera remaining, just staring back at us inthat place we do not look. And for sure, that'll go indisplay as well at some pointwhen it can better shootbetween the OLED sub-pixels,at least enough for machine learningto really correct for it, but not today. And as to in-display fingerprint, the reader that's beenrumored for years now,it's really hard to saywhat the status of that is,because Apple has beenworking on an acoustic systemand has access to Qualcomm'sultrasonic patents, which should just be way, way betterthan the optical fingerprint readerssome other vendors have been using. But at this point I don'tneed anything fancy,I would settle, absolutely settle, for an iPad Air style touch IDin the power button as well.Give it to me now!The camera system is reportedly gettinga literal big upgrade thisyear to a 48 megapixel sensor. That'll give us 8K videoas well as 4X bins,16 megapixel photos, with even more light, thanks to merging those slightlylarger than the some oftheir parts for 4X cells.Maybe better zoom as well,to match the macro mode we got in the 13,although a true Periscope zoomsounds like it's still another year away. Also a bump up to 8GB of memory,to support all that new camera goodness, that 8K ProRes video, maybe.Which would also need a2TB version to record that,I don't know, what would it be?12 to 24 GB per minute of footage.I don't even want to know, because I suck it on-camera mathalmost as much as I suck at coding, and yes, physics, quantummechanics, game theory, cryptocurrency, and so much more. But luckily for all of us,for all of that, there's,today's sponsor, Brilliant. So whether you want
