The Art of Creating a Mr. Potato Head Cake: A Challenging yet Rewarding Experience
After trimming my cake, I made the markings so his little trunk could have a back pan panel that opens up. I created a template of this shape and marked it on the cake as well as there are two holes on the back of Mr. Potato Head like are people putting parts in the back of him children are just going wild with Mr. Potato Head. So, I made those marks.
To create the front side of Mr. Potato Head, I carefully flipped the cake over and draped on the fondant. I smoothed it out, trimmed away some excess, chilled it, and then when I took it out, I had to very carefully cut the seam. This was tricky because I didn't want to cut the fondant that's already perfectly cut underneath and I didn't want to cut away too much fondant so the seams wouldn't meet. So, I trimmed away and then smoothed the fondant together and accentuated the seam with a veining tool.
I made the seam deeper than it actually was because you can definitely see the seam on Mr. Potato Head and also marked the holes he has two holes on the front of his face plus a little smile-shaped hole. And then three holes on both sides of his body, so I used the end of a dowel to mark these holes where the pieces go.
Now, let's talk about the pieces. This was the hardest part of the Mr. Potato Head cake. You want to do this ahead of time if you can and make all these parts out of gum paste so they can dry. But I should have just taken the liberty to create some new parts instead, which is a lesson learned.
I had to be careful when drying the gumpaste pieces because he's curved, and I couldn't allow them to dry flat because then they wouldn't fit on the cake. So, I dried them on the side of some holes that I had that mimicked the curvature of Mr. Potato Head. What was tricky about this was they were stuck to the side of the bowl and I needed to make sure they weren't going to fall off.
To create his face, mouth, tongue, nose, mustache, hat, ears, hands (which are in different shapes), and everything else, it took a lot of patience and dedication. He has a weird smile with one mouth, but also made two ears, two hands that are in different shapes, and other features like a tongue and a mustache. I had fun making his mustache, nose, and hat.
I allowed the hat to dry on the side of a jug because the curvature of his head is tighter than the curvature of the front of his face. I almost quit when I was doing this, as it was so difficult. However, I kept going and made sure that my gum paste was very dry, which makes it difficult to work with.
The process of creating Mr. Potato Head cake was not easy, but it's a challenge worth taking on for the sake of art. I hope that by following my steps and learning from my mistakes, you'll be able to create your own masterpiece.
After completing the main parts of the cake, I placed all the pieces in their correct order because this is the Mr. Potato Head I want to see. He has glasses (although I didn't make them), a Charlie Chaplin hat which is 2023 or 2024, a Charlie Chaplin hat which is 2023 or 2024 okay guys it's time for me to carve this potato and
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enthis week I caked Mr Potato Head so this is a toy I had when I was a kid and I loved this toy except I wasn't really creative with Mr Potato Head because I only wanted to put him together correctly see this kid on the back of the box look at him having a great time I would just take him apart and put him back together in the exact same way I baked two 6in round vanilla cakes and then I'm not going to layer them cuz this cake is so small and I need it to stay together and then I started to carve the potato heads so I used Mr Potato Head as a bit of a template carving out his main shape and then rounding down all the edges you know what we noticed orhan uh Mr Potato Head has a bit of a booty does he not actually what he has is junk in his trunk because his trunk opens and you keep the parts inside so Mr Potato Head has junk in his trunk I'm going to use his actual legs as like a bit of a cake stand place the cake inside so the trickiest part is that I have to carve this cake to the exact same size it can't be off otherwise won't fit in his legs the shape is so simple so you have to get it right if you know what I mean cuz if he's if he's curved to one side rather than the other well he's kind of actually curved back toward the back but if he's misshaping at all it will be really noticeable because he is such a simple shape so once I spent all my time carving I then simple syrup my cakes and I simple syrup front and back cuz the layers are a little thicker than they usually are now that the simple syrup has absorbed I am going to fill the two layers of cake with Italian mering buttercream so these two layers are front and back of the cake as opposed to one on top of the other kind of like Mr Potato Head cuz he does have a seam uh running down the center of his whole body so it's time to crumb coat the the trickiest thing about crumb coating and icing a cake like this is I need to ice it all around and this requires um a little bit of patience cuz I you know I iced one side chilled it flipped the cake over iced the back chilled it or rather Crum coated it then I had to take it out and do the same thing with icing and I also used um my invention and once he is beautifully and chilled I'm going to start to cover Mr Potato Head so like I mentioned he has a seam running all the way down the middle of his body so I am going to cover him in two parts rather than try to drape him completely um so first I'm going to cover the back of Mr Potato Head I flipped the cake onto my sponge that I used just to stop it from flattening quite a unique color Mr Potato Head wouldn't you say no it's like a orangey BR Orange y Brown almost terracotta e type color and is he peeled or is he not I can't I don't think he's peeled cuz he'd be whiter po oh do you think oh do you think Mr Potato Head is sweet is that what we have been missing maybe and then I trimmed away some of the excess like but not right to the cake chilled it and the reason I do that is I want the fondant to sit properly in place and it also ensures that when I cut that seam it will be a cleaner cut and in order to measure the seam you know what I did orhan I used dental floss he's such an odd shape so I kind of measured halfway up top bottom and two sides and then I used the floss to join those lines and make a mark and then with the tip of my knife I went all around the potato and cut away the excess f it then I chilled the cake again oh sorry you know what I did after I trimmed it I made the markings so his little trunk he has like a little back pan panel that opens up so I made a template of that shape and I marked it on the cake as well as there are twoo there are two holes on the back of Mr Potato Head like are people putting exact method draped on the fondant smoothed it trimmed away some of the excess chilled it and then when I took it out I had to very very carefully cut the seam this is tricky because I don't want to cut the fondant that's already perfectly cut underneath and I don't want to cut away too much fondant that the seams don't meet so you've got to be very careful at this point I trimmed away and then I might add that my gumpaste was very dry I don't know if it was like a bad batch but it was really dry which makes it difficult to work with orhan I almost quit when I was doing this I was getting so pissed off I was tired I started making them after I finished another cake and then I just was thinking like this is not worth it it was so difficult and then in fact it was so difficult Eli had to leave cuz it was so difficult he was like I can't even watch this um no but Eli had to leave for other reasons and so some of the parts the hands and particular I filmed with a mount and our iPhone so you're going to get that footage too but I was here till like 8:00 at night and I was just cursing I do not think he's a sweet potato I said it um I shed a lot of Tears yes please please like this video I shared a lot L of tear I shed a lot of tears I shared them with you in fact I will say he has bigger hands like his his hands are big I think he's been working out you know what new new year new potato he's lifting weights now it's time to and you want to do this when your cake is really chilled place the cake on these apple bottom jeans so we need to put Mr Potato Head in his pants and then we can add all these parts I am going to make a pilot hole before putting the parts in because even though they are gumpaste I can still ruin them so I don't want to have to put a lot of pressure on them when I'm holding them and pushing them through the cakee and then I'll place all the parts in and yes I'm going to place them in their correct order cuz this is the Mr Potato Head I want to
