DJI's new drone, the Air 2S, has been equipped with a larger one-inch image sensor, offering 20 megapixel still photos and up to 5.4k video. This new feature has impressed me with the quality of footage I've captured so far. Videos are packed with detail, excellent colors, and dynamic range. The gimbal provides rock-solid stabilization, resulting in super slick and cinematic footage.
At full 5.4k resolution, you can shoot videos at 30 frames per second or increase it to 60 frames per second by dropping the resolution down to 4k. I found that shooting in auto mode gave me the best-looking footage with the least amount of effort. However, you can switch to pro mode for fine control over shutter speed and white balance.
For more professional users, DJI also offers the option to shoot footage in D-Log, which provides a lot of control over contrast and colors when editing your footage in software like Adobe Premiere or DaVinci Resolve. Still images look great too, particularly when taken in raw DNG format and then adjusted in Adobe Lightroom.
One thing that doesn't have is the ability to flip the camera and shoot in portrait orientation instead of landscape mode. This might be disappointing for some users who prefer shooting their landscape images in this orientation sometimes. However, it's also a missed opportunity to capture vertical video from this drone, which has become increasingly popular on sites like TikTok or Instagram Reels.
The high resolution of the sensor means that you can use a two-times or four-times digital zoom effect. The effect at two times is pretty cool, particularly if you're circling around a point of interest. However, the image quality is reduced quite a bit when using the four-times zoom effect.
DJI promises 31 minutes of flight time from a full battery, which I found to be slightly unrealistic in my testing. From my mixed use ranging from hovering in place to fast flybys and circling around a point of interest, I got around 20-25 minutes of real-world flight time from a single battery.
The Air 2S is one of the easiest DJI drones to fly, with a straightforward setup process that gets you flying within under a minute. The control scheme is the same as previous DJI drones, making it familiar for users who have flown earlier models. However, it's also easy for beginners to get started.
The drone comes with plenty of automated flight programs to help you get the best-looking footage when out and about. My favorite is the point-of-interest mode that will have the drone automatically circle around you or someone else by tapping on them on your phone's screen. The auto modes are particularly handy if you're trying to get footage of yourself while solo or with friends, without having to stay behind and do the flying.
Birding YouTubers who frequently shoot out in nature should consider whether a drone like the Air 2S can add another layer of production to their videos. While it may not have the commercial-level image quality you'd want from a bigger setup like the Inspire 2, it does offer great image quality for both video and stills, making it a great option for those who want to capture beautiful footage without breaking the bank.
Overall, I'm impressed with DJI's new drone, which offers great image quality, ease of use, and plenty of automated flight features. It's perfect for capturing stunning footage in various situations, and its compact size makes it easy to take on the go.

perfectly in a lens slot in my photography backpack that makes it superb for landscape photographers just like me who want the option of getting great aerial footage and images but don't necessarily want to drag an entire dedicated drone case all up the hillside with them it's smaller and lighter than 2016's mavic pro but it is bigger and heavier than the very small dji mavic mini 2 so this one is still the one to go for if every ounce counts that said the extra size of the air 2s will make it a bit more stable in windy conditions the controller is pretty chunky being not that much smaller than the drone itself but it feels robust enough that you can chuck it into a bag without really worrying about damaging it spare batteries for the drone are pretty small so you can easily fit these
