2016 Chevrolet Malibu Review - 1.5L and 2.0L Turbo Engines

**A Comprehensive Review of the New Midsize Sedan**

As I put the new midsize sedan to the test, I was impressed by its numerous features and technologies that make it an attractive option for car buyers. The first thing I noticed was the ease of use of the adaptive cruise control system, which allows the car to adjust its speed seamlessly without requiring constant intervention from the driver. This feature has been a game-changer in terms of safety and convenience, eliminating the need to constantly adjust speed on the highway.

The adaptive cruise control system has also done a great job of keeping track of the car ahead, even when they start taking turns or changing direction suddenly. In fact, I was able to see this feature in action during a test drive, where I was traveling at 60 mph and the car smoothly adjusted its speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

One area where the sedan excels is in terms of noise reduction. The interior is remarkably quiet, with minimal road noise and no wind noise at all. This is especially impressive when cruising at high speeds, where most other sedans would be generating significant amounts of wind noise. Even on rougher roads, the suspension proved to be comfortable and smooth, eliminating any harshness or jarring sensations.

The lead engineer behind this project, Jesse Ortega, was enthusiastic about the new sedan and passionate about its design. Meeting him at a press event was a highlight of my experience, as it showed that the engineers who have been working on this car for four years are dedicated to creating a vehicle that meets their high standards. Their passion is evident in every aspect of the car's design and features.

The engine options available for the sedan are also noteworthy. The 1.5L turbocharged engine provides plenty of power, while the 2.0L turbocharged engine offers even more acceleration. The naturally aspirated v6 option is also a good choice, with respectable fuel economy and smooth performance. However, it's worth noting that all three engines have some limitations, such as limited peak torque and relatively high emissions.

In comparison to other midsize sedans on the market, this car stands out for its impressive fuel economy and solid power delivery. The 2.0L turbocharged engine returns 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, which is comparable to other v6-powered sedans but still a notable achievement.

Overall, I believe that this midsize sedan is a strong contender in its class, with a unique combination of advanced technologies, comfortable ride, and respectable fuel economy. Whether you're looking for a reliable family car or an affordable luxury vehicle, this sedan is definitely worth considering.

"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhello everyone and welcome in this video I am at the launch of the 2016 Malibu so we're going to be checking out various different models there's three engines offered a 1.5 L A 1.8 L and a 2 L I'm currently in the 1.5 L this is a turbocharged engine producing about 160 horsepower uh this is the LT trim of the 2016 Malibu so we're going to go ahead and give this a test drive and I'm actually probably most excited about the hybrid model uh and I'll tell you why but there's some pretty cool Tech that goes into it I'm also kind of surprised that Chevy's putting a 1.5 L in a midsize sedan I think that's pretty cool an American car company putting this tiny engine uh in a pretty big sedan so that's pretty cool to see you know it certainly progress as far as efficiency is concerned so I'll just go ahead and get started with this interior I do have plenty of leg room my knees aren't coming into contact with anything I'm 61 uh head room also seems pretty good even with the sunroof so not bad there as far as visibility out the front doesn't look bad to the sides is fine the rear is a bit congested back there so not that great looking back uh but every other direction seems pretty fine I'm sure it does have a rear view camera for backing up fairly loud blinker oh so we've got a 1.5 turbo we got to see how this thing feels I'll slow back down a little bit and floor it and yeah it's underwhelming now the flip side of that it is a small engine of course it's not that exciting to drive but it is pretty efficient 27 in the city 37 on the highway so pretty good fuel economy rating out of this it is quiet in here I'm driving on some fairly rough roads and I don't really hear too much road noise I don't hear any wind noise um you know I'm not going that fast only 40 m an hour but that said it does seem to be a pretty nice quiet interior so here's the interesting thing uh parked next to a Tesla we're both waiting at this stop light neither of us using fuel because this does have fuel shut off so both of us were equally green for a very brief moment in time now one of the things I've found surprising about this Malibu event is what I've learned about teen drivers and teen passengers apparently only 55% of teen passengers wear their seat belt uh that's pretty outrageous if you're a teenager and you don't wear your seat belt in a car you're pretty dumb like that's all I have to say like they save your life like it's it's ridiculous why would you not wear a seat belt what good reason do you have you don't have a good reason I know you don't so just wear your seat belt that's insane also 30% of car accidents are caused by Young Drivers and apparently the leading cause of deaths for teenagers is an automotive accident that's insane guys wear your seat bels it's not that hard they make cars so safe these days and if you're not going to wear the one thing that holds you in place when your car is doing ridiculous things because you're a teenager and your hormones are crazy and you don't know what you're doing like what's wrong with you it's very simple you get in the car you wear a seat belt and all right I've ranted enough about seat belts anyways you get the point just be safe I'm sure this is what Chevy wanted me to talk about in my review of their new car now the whole reason I was mentioning uh this teen driver safety stuff is they've Incorporated this teen driving mode with the new Malibu so you can program the key fob that you give to your son or daughter or whatever and whenever they get into the car it will have this uh Team mode and so it will record it'll let the parents know you know if they hit a maximum speed one of the other cool things it does uh which totally uh disables teens is that it will not allow you to connect up a Bluetooth device and play music if you don't have the seat belt buckled so you have to buckle the seat belt first of all I was thinking like oh maybe this is like a grandpa driving mode also where Grandpa can't do anything crazy but then when I heard about the Bluetooth thing it's like H Grandpa's not really going to be using his Bluetooth so it really is a teen driving mode so my overall conclusions of this 1.5 ler um I'm just going to say it's underwhelming it's not that thrilling uh there are other sedans out there which get similar gas mileage which have similar power um so you know it's probably just the status quo uh I'm looking forward to testing out the 2 L as well as the hybrid versions which have some pretty cool Tech that go along with them and poof we're in a different vehicle so this is the Premier trim of the Chevy Malibu and so this one's going to come with the 2 L turbocharged engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels fun fact this is actually the first 8-speed automatic transmission for a front-wheel drive vehicle 4gm now the engine as I mentioned 2 L turbocharge and it's actually a twin scroll turbocharger to help bring on Boost earlier so it's going to be Prett producing 250 horsepower and 258 lbet of torque at just 1,700 RPM so you get Peak torque very early on which leads to kind of a fun car to drive uh in the city because you can get that Peak torque even at a low uh you know RPM now one of the cool things about this vehicle is the infotainment system and how they've set up the climate controls now something that's often overthought and overly complicated in luxury vehicles or in higher trim levels is the climate control system and here they've got a very simple setup so you've got buttons for where you want the air to blow uh physical buttons you don't have a one mode that you know transfers you between all the different areas where air could possibly blow so it's a really nice system as far as how well it's laid out and it allows you to spend very little time you know looking at it doing these things that should be very quick and simple to do uh and so they've set it up so they can be with the display same story so they have apple carplay and so literally all you do is you plug in your phone I've got an iPhone so I plug it in I hit Apple carplay I don't have to do any syncing or anything it's already hooked up and so I've got Spotify so I can listen to music I've got Apple Maps you no longer need to rely on a navigation and finally you can have a good search function uh in a car's navigation system and if you do have an Android they also offer Android auto so you know if you've got uh a different device you can hook that up as well now of course that's going to be using your cell phone sta so if you have a pretty poor data plan then you need to remember that uh you know you may be out of touch so I use T-Mobile T-Mobile is awful uh this is not a message to support them in any way because they have terrible service and so as you can see the map is totally useless but that's T-Mobile's fault not uh you know Chevy's fault they're they're giving me the ability to use it uh and T-Mobile gives me the ability to uh know where I am when I'm located uh exactly in a city that has good cell coverage but this does have Wi-Fi as well so you could hook up your phone to the Wi-Fi then you can rely on AT&T rather than me using T-Mobile and I think I've ranted long enough about T-Mobile at this point so we'll touch on other subjects now as far as as the transmission if you put it into this uh L or low mode it gives you the ability to manually select gears and it's actually a pretty smooth process it's not necessarily that fast uh but it is very smooth in transitioning and that's one of the things that I commended on the Mazda 6 I thought they did a really nice job of making the gear shifts really smooth um with this one you don't have paddle shifters it has it on the shift knob itself but it does seem to do a nice job of smoothly transitioning whether or not it's that fast you know it really isn't that necessary this is a midsize sedan you're not really that concerned about speed you're more concerned about comfort and it's a very smooth shifting transmission now one of the things that Chevy has really focused on with this new Malibu is taking out weight and so they've been able to remove about 300 lb versus the previous generation and they've done this basically through intelligent engineering of the body design the body's removed about 100 lb and so you can look at that at the body itself and you'll see all these holes cut out of it where you know there isn't material needed and then you'll you see all these components added on uh where they do need to add material in order to increase the rigidity of it and you know increase it for safety and performance reasons so a lot of this is done just through computer design um and you know hundreds of different iterations where they go through different simulations and determine where is extra material needed where is it not needed and they remove it everywhere it's not needed and in doing so they've been able to create one of the lightest midsize sedans in all the while it's actually longer than most of the midsize sedans out there so it still has all the spaciousness um and they've actually increased rear leg room this time so even you know someone is tall as myself at 61 I can sit comfortably in the rear versus in the previous Malibu that wasn't necessarily the case so it's got a spacious uh rear passenger compartment it's got a large trunk I believe it's almost 16 uh cubic feet and so you know and yet all the while the base trim is under 3100 lb so very light for midsize sedan uh the premier trim I believe goes up to about 3,400 lb uh but even still they they're ble to keep the weight in a you know a really nice area where it's not that heavy and they're not using really exotic materials to do this it's really just done through optimizing the engineering of it and taking out material where it's not necessary in other news this road is absolutely beautiful this is the PCH uh so you know just an absolutely gorgeous Road it's a little uh salt in the air from the ocean but uh the California coast is gorgeous now this does have Lane keep assist so ideally you know it'll give you a little nudge to put you back in the right direction if you start to go off course I'm kind of curious how this is going to oh look at that it's turning it in it's like no don't be an idiot um so it doesn't you know Take Over Control and put you back in the center of the lane it's not this really intrusive thing but it's going to try and prevent you from getting out of the lane and as we just demonstrated it actually does pretty good job so what if we go to the right a little bit here it just lets me go off it was going to let me die well luckily you know you have to rely on your own brain you can't just trust a car to drive for you so this has multiple camera systems on it so it has a camera for pedestrian tracking and in the daylight I believe it's something like 130 ft that it can recognize people and it will come to a halt uh if someone you know jumps out in front of you it'll slow down uh and try to break so that you don't hit that person and then it can also track vehicles with the camera uh for example for a collision mitigation braking system and then with the adaptive cruise control system you have a radar on top of that so it can track vehicles ahead of you uh such as what it's doing right now up to 360 ft in order to keep a safe following distance and you can follow behind them you don't have to worry about constantly adjusting your speed the car does it for you so that's pretty nice and it hasn't seemed to be a very aggressive system some of them out there will break pretty hard uh in certain scenarios and it's also done a nice job of keeping track of the car ahead um some of them will also kind of lose them when you start to go around a corner even if it's not that uh tight of a radius some of them will lose the car head and start accelerating uh for example when I was in the Mustang uh a bit ago that one you know if the car starts taking a slight turn it just ignores it and it starts accelerating you're like who hold on there's still a car ahead versus this has done a good job of keeping track of the car ahead regardless of if they start taking a bend and I'm still going straight now as far as road noise it's actually pretty quiet in here you do hear a little bit of road noise but you don't hear much wind noise at all I'm cruising at about 60 M an hour and you really don't hear any wind noise so it's pretty impressive how they've been able to cancel that out and you know you get a little bit of road noise but overall it's pretty quiet in this interior same goes for the suspension it's pretty comfortable and quiet you know you don't really have this harshness to this drive it's very smooth riding um and granted this is a very smooth road but on the first leg that I had this in it was a bit rougher and even still you know it's very comfortable machine to drive around part of that may be due to the fact that they've increased the wheelbase on this by about 4 in versus the previous generation so you can kind of get a little bit of the bumps where the car doesn't rot quite as much because the wheels are extended out a little bit further so we are on a perfectly Flat Road so we can just test out the 0 to 60 really quick here little bit of traction control kicking in there and there's 60 now as far as the engines offered I think they're all pretty logical choices so there's the 1.5 L turbo there's the 2 L turbo and then there's the 1.8 hybrid naturally aspirated and I think you know for the class uh for the segment the lower uh trim levels with the 1.5 L it's plenty of horsepower because the vehicle doesn't weigh that much and so it's competitive in its class for the 2 L you get a good power you know 250 horsepower out of it uh which is similar to some of the v6s out there naturally aspirated v6s yet this is returning 22 in the city 33 on the highway and so for example the uh Honda Accord or the Toyota Camry where they have the large 3.5 L v6s they don't get the fuel economy even though they're pretty much just as quick uh and you know you don't get Peak torque early on either like this has with the twin scroll turbocharge so I think the engine options for this are all very logical they're very economical you can get good fuel economy and still have solid power and because the vehicle's not that heavy you still have good acceleration now with regards to the Chevy Malibu one of the things I wanted to mention is that you know coming out to this press event it's been really cool because you get to meet some of the engineers behind the project and the lead engineer Jesse Ortega it's just great talking with him he's incredibly passionate about this and you know he's super super stoked about this midsize sedan and that's awesome to see and part of me just thinks like who am I to come in and critique this project that they've been working on for 4 years and you know he knows all the problems and the you know the benefits and the drawbacks of this vehicle and you know he's certainly taking that into consideration for the design of the next Malibu uh whenever that comes around and so it seems a little bit you know crazy for me to step in when I when I meet the guy who this is his baby this has been his project for the past four years that he's been working on and then I'm going to come in here and you know critique this thing it's like I just love to see the fact that this guy is so passionate about designing this car and and it's been really cool to meet all the people out here so I just wanted to say I appreciate that and thanks to Chevy for help me out to check this vehicle out it's been great I think this is a solid argument for the midsize sedan segment and uh thank you guys for watching if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them belowhello everyone and welcome in this video I am at the launch of the 2016 Malibu so we're going to be checking out various different models vehicle's not that heavy you still have good acceleration now with regards to the Chevy Malibu one of the things I wanted to mention is that you know coming out to this press event it's been really cool because you get to meet some of the engineers behind the project and the lead engineer Jesse Ortega it's just great talking with him he's incredibly passionate about this and you know he's super super stoked about this midsize sedan and that's awesome to see and part of me just thinks like who am I to come in and critique this project that they've been working on for 4 years and you know he knows all the problems and the you know the benefits and the drawbacks of this vehicle and you know he's certainly taking that into consideration for the design of the next Malibu uh whenever that comes around and so it seems a little bit you know crazy for me to step in when I when I meet the guy who this is his baby this has been his project for the past four years that he's been working on and then I'm going to come in here and you know critique this thing it's like I just love to see the fact that this guy is so passionate about designing this car and and it's been really cool to meet all the people out here so I just wanted to say I appreciate that and thanks to Chevy for help me out to check this vehicle out it's been great I think this is a solid argument for the midsize sedan segment and uh thank you guys for watching if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them below\n"
