iMac Pro vs 5K iMac Speaker & FaceTime Comparison

Apple's Long-Awaited iMac Pro: A Comprehensive Review

We recently received our hands on Apple's highly anticipated iMac Pro, and we've been hard at work benchmarking and testing it ever since Apple claimed that they improved the speaker's over the 5k iMac. While this claim may have come as a surprise to many, given that the 5k iMac already boasts some of the best speakers available on a Mac, we decided to put both models to the test.

To start with, we cranked up the volume and listened carefully to the differences between the two machines. We were pleased to find that our personal assessment was in line with Apple's claims – audio seemed to blend in more on the 5k iMac, especially during the guitar solo section. However, we noticed a significant increase in volume compared to the 5k iMac, and the sound of the pro was much crisper. In contrast, the 5k iMac sounded somewhat messy, particularly with the subwoofer reaching its limits.

On the other hand, when it came to bass quality, the Mac Pro left the 5k iMac in the dust. The former had a tight and strong sound that was clean and clear, whereas the latter's bass seemed muddled and unrefined. This is likely due to the improved speaker design on the iMac Pro.

In addition to its improved audio capabilities, the iMac Pro also boasts an impressive FaceTime camera feature. This is the first ever 1080p FaceTime camera to come on a Mac, compared to the 720p camera found on the 5k iMac. Furthermore, it comes equipped with four microphones, a significant improvement over the single microphone used on the 5k iMac.

We conducted a comprehensive test of the FaceTime camera and audio quality using both machines. The results were staggering – one can instantly tell just how much better the image quality is on the iMac Pro compared to the 5k iMac. This was particularly evident in terms of white balance, which perfectly matched what we saw with our own eyes. On the other hand, the 5k iMac's camera seemed utterly ancient by comparison.

Moving on from face-to-face interactions, we also put both machines through a rigorous benchmarking process to compare their performance capabilities. As expected, the iMac Pro held its own in terms of processing power and multitasking capabilities. However, it was clear that the two machines had different strengths – while the 5k iMac performed admirably in our tests, the iMac Pro's improved audio features made a significant difference in certain situations.

Speaking of which, we also put both machines through some real-world scenarios to test their performance. For instance, we noticed that background noise was significantly better blocked on the 5k iMac due to its single microphone location at the bottom of the speaker grille. On the other hand, the four microphones on the iMac Pro were more easily picked up by our surroundings, which resulted in a slightly noisier environment.

In conclusion, it's clear that Apple has made some significant strides with their latest iMac Pro model. While not everything is perfect, particularly when compared to the 5k iMac, this machine is undoubtedly an improvement in many areas. As always, we recommend checking out our upcoming performance comparison videos for more in-depth analysis of each machine's capabilities.
