iPhone X Review

The Fun of Reviewing the iPhone 10: A Hands-On Experience

I have to say, I'm having an absolute blast with my brand new iPhone 10. It's been a while since I've had this much fun with any gadget since the original iPhone, and it might just be the best damn product Apple has ever made. The moment I picked up the phone, I knew I was in for a treat. The size of the phone is similar to that of the iPhone 8, but the screen size is equivalent to an iPhone 8 plus. Apple achieved this by making the display run along the edge, with almost-rounded edges and what they call "horns." While I'm not going to lie, these horns can be a bit annoying at times, especially when viewed on bright white interfaces.

However, once you get used to them, they become less noticeable. In portrait mode, your thumb tends to cover them up, but in landscape mode, the display really goes edge-to-edge, which is fantastic for augmented reality. There's no bezel to distract from the experience, just a clean and seamless portal into the digital world. The display itself is OLED, and while Apple sourced it well, they also did an incredible job of anti-aliasing it to the point where most people won't even notice its pentile nature. True Tone is also here, and I highly recommend turning it on – it makes white look, well, white.

The iPhone 10 is also the first true HDR-enabled portable phone on the market. Whether you watch Wonder Woman or Baby Driver, the display is flippin' gorgeous. Apple has done a ton of work to prevent burn-in with their proprietary display technology. The home button is gone in its place, replaced by a new fluid navigation system. Swipe up to go home, swipe sideways to switch between apps, and swipe slightly up to pause – it's all very intuitive and takes some getting used to.

But what really sets the iPhone 10 apart is its touch sensitivity. Apple has boosted the sensitivity to 120 Hertz, making it feel like the screen is glued to your finger. It's instantaneous, and I find myself playing with it non-stop. The lack of a home button also means there's no longer any need for Touch ID – instead, iPhone X uses Face ID, which is still in beta but works ridiculously well. However, if you're concerned about security, you can disable the attention requirement in settings.

One of the most exciting features of the iPhone 10 is its computational photography capabilities. This is where things get really transformative. With the A11 Bionic processor and OLED display, apps can access rudimentary meshes, depth maps, and expression tracking. It's also enabled portrait selfies with full-on bouquet effects – it's silly, but it's so much fun! And let's not forget about emoji built into iMessage – it's a game-changer.

The back camera system on the iPhone 10 is about a third of a stop better than the one on the iPhone 8. This is thanks to an F/1.4 or aperture optical stabilization, as well as a new telephoto lens. The rest of the features are familiar – we're still talking about 60 frames per second 4K video and 240 frames per second 1080p slo-mo. The phone also comes with a glass back that's a bit slippery for my taste, but it does allow for inductive charging.

Finally, developers can take advantage of the new display by updating their apps and games. While there are some limitations to face ID, it still works incredibly well – especially when combined with Portrait mode. Overall, if you're ready for an iPhone that's truly next-generation, look no further than the iPhone 10. It's a phenomenal experience from start to finish, and I'm having an absolute blast with my new device.

but it works ridiculously well so well you start to forget you ever had a passcode so well and make touch ID to feel like a chore by default you do have to look at your screen though intently like I
