**Mason Jar Light Tutorial**
Along with the entire Series, we've created a mason jar light/lantern that you can make yourself at home. To start, you'll need a large mason jar, a cord to plug your light into, and some basic materials like a hammer, nails, spray paint, and a light bulb.
We found the perfect cord at Ikea, which was incredibly affordable - only $5 or $6! You can find it in their store by searching for "cord with socket." We won't be linking it here since we're on a text-only platform, but trust us when we say that you won't regret buying it from there.
Once you have your cord and light bulb, the rest of the process is straightforward. Simply plug the light into the wall, and then place a light bulb inside the mason jar. You can use any type of light bulb you like - we chose a vintage, skinny bulb that fits perfectly in our jar. Make sure to spray paint it with a metallic finish if you want it to match the look of your lid.
To create the socket that will hold the light bulb, you'll need to remove the top part of the cord. You can do this by tracing out the shape of the socket on the back of the mason jar lid and then using a hammer and nails to create a series of small holes in the plastic. This will weaken the lid enough for you to punch out a circular hole. Be careful not to break the lid as you work - it's a delicate process!
Next, use pliers to attach two screws to either side of the socket, allowing you to secure whatever light fixture or shade you want to hold onto. You can also add some small holes around the outside of the socket to allow heat to escape and prevent the jar from getting too hot when the light is on.
Now that your socket is complete, it's time to assemble everything together. Use a screw ring to attach the flat piece with the big hole in it to the bottom of the socket. This will create a snug fit that allows you to wedge the lid back onto the jar. Take the extra small screws and attach them to the lid, making sure they're securely fastened.
Once everything is dry and assembled, plug in your light and turn it on! You should be able to see your beautifully crafted mason jar light shining brightly. It's a great way to add some ambiance to any room - just hang it up on the wall or place it on a table.
We hope you enjoy making this tutorial as much as we did. If you want to see more DIY tutorials and projects, be sure to check out our other videos by clicking here.
"WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enso today we have a mason jar DIY for you to go along with the entire Series this is a mason jar light/ Mason jar lantern that we've uh made to make this you're going to need a large mason jar a cord to put plug your light into and we found this cord at Ikea it was really cheap like5 or $6 we will link that below for you it's a cord with a socket yes we went to Home Depot and we couldn't find them so really don't waste your time and just go straight to Ikea and I'm sure they're cheaper there too anyways yeah um so yeah it's just the light that plugs into the wall and you put a light bulb on the other end really simple and you're going to need obviously a light bulb we chose this vintage kind of skinny light bul but really anything that fits into your jar is fine we use spray paint to make it look a little more metallic but that's optional and a hammer and nails so what you're first going to do is take apart your Mason jar and take a pen and the socket that you got from Ikea and Trace out the shape of it on the back of the Mason drar lid MH and then you're going to take your hammer and nail and you're going to start basically by Perforating a whole bunch of really really small holes you're going to make it weaker so it's going to be you can punch it out kind of like a so this part's a little bit tedious but you're going to go around in circle and just punch little little holes all right all the way around and then we punched a hole in the middle and then took pliers and stuck them in so that we could start like ripping kind of just snaps out like a circle like if you were to pull punch something in a way yeah what we did next was this is optional but we wanted the top of our cord to look like it kind of was metal along with the Mason jar lid so and like blend it in yeah exactly right so we bought this uh silver metallic spray paint from Home Depot called satin nickel we love the name of it satin nickel so what you're going to do is tape off part of the cord that you don't want to spray paint um and you're going to go ahead and spray paint the top of theet the socket part of your cord and this is optional but we also chose to spray paint um the the top of our Lids cuz we wanted the metals to be like the exact same color yeah but I mean if you don't care or they already match then skip it no problem as well as there's the way the socket works is there's like a the top part and then another part so that you can secure whatever yeah like as if you were putting a lampshade on it to hold the lampshade on yeah so we also spray painted the bottom part of the socket that comes off exactly after everything is dry you're going to take that flat piece that you already punched the big hole out of and you're actually going to make a whole bunch of little holes around uh the outside again more holes this is just to let the heat Escape when you do have your light on to let it ventilate and not get too hot in the Mason jar yeah so you're just going to put some holes around there and we did this after we spray painted it just cuz we didn't want the holes to go cloged by spray paint or anything right once everything's dry and you have the holes in the flat piece you're going to take your socket and put the screw ring around it and then you're going to take your flat piece that has the big hole punched out and the little holes and you're just going to kind of like wedge it on there may be a little bit difficult but don't worry you're only doing this once then you're going to take the extra little screw piece for uh support and kind of wedges everything together you're going to put that on and then you're going to take your light whatever light you found works good for you put that in and then you're going to put the whole thing on and then use the big round screw thing to screw it all together sounds like a lot of steps but it's just assembling it in order yeah makes sense really the hardest part was punching out all the little holes and getting out that big circle exactly so once you're done you can just go ahead and plug it into the wall hang it up wherever you want or set it on a table and it looks really good I think and Ikea is great because they give you this little like hook screw thing so you can actually yeah when you buy the cord it comes with a hook to hang it so yeah that's great I love I anyways we hope you guys enjoyed this tutorial and if you want to see more you can click here to see other me and J videos byeso today we have a mason jar DIY for you to go along with the
