A Young Couple's Quest for a Home
The story begins with Ron and an unnamed young woman, who we'll refer to as "Miss Iran," searching for a home to start their new life together. They've walked three days from a distance to find a house that meets their modest expectations. As they browse through local newspapers, they come across an advertisement for a house with two glass windows, priced at $14 per month. However, Miss Iran explains that she can only afford $10 per month, and the price is non-negotiable.
Miss Iran takes Ron on a tour of her current home, which appears to be in disrepair. She mentions that the chimney needs work and that the fireplace could use some attention. Despite its rough state, Miss Iran sees potential in the house and believes it would be an ideal place for a young couple like them to start their life together. As they discuss the price, Ron expresses concern about affording the $14 per month.
The conversation takes a turn as Ron reveals that he has worked hard to achieve his current situation. He explains that Miss Iran is a poor woman who has never known luxury or comfort. She mentions that she's had to live with the reality of her circumstances, including having to deal with river rats who took her favorite cow and eating it. The story highlights the harsh realities of life in this new land.
Miss Iran shares another touching anecdote from her childhood, where she sat down to a meal with her parents and commented on how dry the beef was, unaware that it was from an old donkey named Fred, her best friend. Ron listens intently, and despite their differences, they begin to form a connection.
As they continue to discuss their options, Miss Iran mentions that two acres of land might be enough for them to have a donkey. However, she expresses uncertainty about finding suitable animals in the local market. The conversation raises questions about how much land is needed for such a simple task and whether it's feasible to find affordable alternatives.
Throughout their discussion, Ron and Miss Iran demonstrate a genuine interest in each other's lives and perspectives. Despite the challenges they face, they see potential in this new life together and are willing to work together to make it happen. As they navigate the complexities of finding a home, they begin to build a connection that goes beyond just finding a place to live.
