iPod 4th Gen Retro Review

**The iPod: A Revolutionary Music Player**

As I sit here with my trusty 40 GB iPod Classic, I am reminded of the revolutionary technology that Apple introduced to the world over 7 years ago. This device was more than just a music player - it was a game-changer. With its sleek design and massive storage capacity, it revolutionized the way people listened to music on-the-go.

**The Controller**

One of the unique features of this iPod Classic is the controller. It allows you to control your music playback using a combination of buttons and dials located on the cord of the headphones. This simple yet effective interface makes it easy to navigate through your music library, play, pause, skip, and fast-forward tracks. The hold switch on the back of the device also allows for convenient playback control.

**The iPod's Features**

As I explore the features of this iPod Classic, I am struck by its simplicity and elegance. You can easily scroll through your music library using the menu system, which takes you to albums, artists, songs, podcasts, genres, composers, audio books, and more. There are also some additional features like a clock, contacts, calendar, notes, and games. The device comes with an iPod dock, two cables (fire wire and USB), and a pair of headphones, all neatly packaged in a square box.

**Playing Music**

When it's time to play music, the iPod Classic delivers exceptional audio quality through its headphone jack or dock connector. I can hear the difference between this device and my first-generation iPhone, which was actually used mainly for its storage capacity due to its limited music library capabilities. The audio fidelity of this device is remarkable, with crystal-clear sound reproduction that leaves little room for distortion.

**Using the iPod as a Hard Drive**

One of the clever features of the iPod Classic is its ability to be used as a hard drive. With only 15 GB of music stored on it, I can use the remaining space for video playback through the USB cable on my computer or other devices. This flexibility makes it an excellent alternative storage solution.

**Navigating the Menu**

As I navigate through the menu system, I appreciate the simplicity and ease of use. You can easily browse your music library, skip tracks using the center button, adjust the volume, and play/pause playback with a few swift presses of the buttons. The EQ settings are also available, which allows for customizable sound tuning.

**Additional Features**

As I delve deeper into the features of this iPod Classic, I find that it offers some additional conveniences like Shuffle, Repeat, Backlight Timer, and Sound Check. These options allow you to customize your listening experience to suit your preferences. The device also comes with legal language, contacts, and instructions for using its various features.

**Gaming and Other Features**

Interestingly, this iPod Classic comes with a few games like Brick Music Quiz Parachute Solitaire. While the graphics are relatively low-res, the gameplay is engaging and fun. This feature adds a new dimension to the device's functionality, making it an even more versatile music player.

**The Verdict**

As I reflect on my experience with this 40 GB iPod Classic, I am struck by its build quality, audio fidelity, and overall performance. Despite being 7 years old, this device still works like a charm, with crisp sound reproduction that rivals many modern devices. While it may be pricey compared to today's standards, its innovative design and features make it an attractive option for music enthusiasts who value simplicity and reliability.

**Conclusion**

If you're one of the lucky ones who still uses an iPod Classic or have a favorite device from this era, I'd love to hear your experiences in the comments section below. "WEBVTTKind: captionsLanguage: enhi everyone this is Aaron for zolot Tech and we're going to do a retro review of the iPod this is the fourth generation iPod long before the iPhone especially the iPhone 4 was the fourth generation iPod this was released in July of 2004 and I actually had this as my first iPod not my first music device I had Rios and things like that before this but this was my first iPod that I actually got as a Christmas gift in 2004 that's a long time ago 7 years ago now and this is before iPods could play video or have a touchcreen they they introduced this click wheel for this generation iPod the click wheel let me turn it on here I'm looking for a sleep awake button but this click wheel controls the settings just like that and when you want to select something like music you hit the center button when you want to go back you hit menu you have back forward play pause pretty simple with its monochrome screen and there's not a whole lot going on in the user interface but that's what made it good it was simple had a very simple straightforward user interface and worked well but let's take a look at the outside this is pretty well kept up and works great this is a 40 gig hard drive based iPod it gives 12 hours of battery life and if if we look at the top we have a microphone Jack along with a controller Port so if you had a controller you could control it on the on the cable of the headphones and then we have a hold switch that simply lets you hold on the back it did get some scrapes but it's pretty good considering its age it says 40 gab see if we can get the reflection out of there 40 GB iPod on the sides there's nothing and on the bottom we have our standard dock connector now this is back when I ODS came with a lot of different accessories this actually wasn't one of them this is a $40 Apple case that was separate the iPod was $400 or $3.99 it came with an iPod dock came in a big square box I don't have anymore but it came with an iPod dock and two cables one fire wire and one USB and it came with a pair of headphones and a CD to install iTunes so that you could sync it if you didn't have the internet at the time and then you could rip your CDs and load them on the iPod that's all this really does is it plays music you know before the App Store and all that this was this was revolutionary for its time as far as the size of it and the amount of storage that it held but again it was $400 so we scroll like this if we want to go into music we go into music and we scroll now one of the nice things and you can do this today with iPod Classics and things you could use it as a hard drive and since I didn't have 40 GB of Music I'd have 15 or so I could use the other for video and watch them through the USB cable on my on my computer or whatever I was using at the time so we can go into artists and again we browse uh we have podcasts and things like that uh we'll go into uh Skillet here's some here's the music and there's one of the songs and this is what it says there is no external speaker for music you have to use the headphones and if I want to turn it up I turn the dial if I want to skip ahead I hit this button if I want to hold and fast forward I can hit it again and hold it can play and pause if I hit the center button we can get a dial where we can quickly go between songs back and forth hit it again uh we get volume hit it again again we hit it again and again and then we can scroll it's really that simple if I want to go back I hit menu Hit menu again and again and again and we have albums artists songs podcasts genres composers audio books uh we do have a couple things with uh extras and settings we can Shuffle the backlight we can turn on and off you can go right back to now playing if we go into settings we have about main menu Shuffle repeat backlight timer we do have an EQ on this sound check and clicker let's turn the clicker on I can hear it pretty crazy I know and uh we have legal language contacts the strange thing is is your iPod could sync contacts and play music that's just about it now if we go back one there are a few things you could do extra with it we have a clock contacts calendar notes and games and these would be notes that you would load from your computer sync through iTunes not a whole lot more they have instructions and games brick Music Quiz parachute and solitire so if we go into brick this is breakout that's pretty much it we can play play Breakout on this pretty low reses LCD screen uh not a whole lot going on here but you get the idea it was just a music player now the good thing about this is the audio Fidelity is really good out of the old iPods if you compared this to the first gen iPhone I actually kept using this when I had the first gen iPhone mainly due to its storage but kept using it because it had better audio output through the headphone jack or through the dock connector whatever audio processor in is in here just seemed to do a better job and have better reprodu of music without any any Distortion or anything different and this still is very good compared to today's devices as far as audio quality it's very simple but it still works and this is built really well it's 7 years old and it works just as well as it did on day one with a 40 gig hard drive in it so Apple I think did a pretty good job obviously it's pretty expensive for its day but it's a nice device if you had one of these or you have a favorite iPod and maybe you still use it I'd love to hear from you below just see what you're still using if you don't use the iPod touch or what you think about the the audio quality coming out of the older iPods uh just comment below I always appreciate that thanks for watching this is Aaron
